    On this week's show, Prof. Wolff discusses the immense social waste of US unemployment now, Trump ban on investing in Chinese companies, new global organization for worker co-ops, higher education cuts in UK and US. The second half of the show features an interview with Niki Okuk, South Central LA activist fighting for community control of downtown Crenshaw Mall.
    Niki Okuk is a South Central Los Angeles resident and activist working to halt rapid gentrification through a community lead bid to buy and redevelop the 40-acre Crenshaw Mall under a cooperative and community wealth building model. She has spent several years building green-collar jobs and a
    democratic workplace, which she spoke about in her 2017 TED talk "Fire the Boss." She is a Black Lives Matter organizer and tribal member Awakane Kamanuku.

      @freddieg7131 3 года назад

      There is nothing about capitalism that prevents worker coops from forming. In fact there is nothing stopping groups of people from getting together and forming their own socialist or communist communities within a capitalist society. Under socialism, however, being a capitalist is violently opposed. That should make you wonder about which system can actually work and which system people actually like to live in. But socialists insist that everyone needs to be a socialist, because after all they need someone to steal from if they are going to give to someone else....

      @@freddieg7131 When the slave owner says, "I already let some of the slaves go, and now you're opposed to me having any slaves at all?" Really makes you wonder about which system can work and which system people actually like to live in. But abolitionists insist no one can own slaves, because after all they must unjustly take the slaves from the slave owners. God you're a joke lmao

    • @freddieg7131
      @freddieg7131 3 года назад

      @@bigbabymustache9284 It would be difficult for you to be more wrong. You see the point is that socialism is the system of slavery. Slaves of the state. Under capitalism individuals are free to form whatever working arrangement they would like. A group could get together and basically be socialists. Share their income, distribute it however they see fit. If any of the socialists today want to start a business and hire only socialists who are going to work together that is fine. There are a lot of socialists with plenty of money to start a business. So no shortage of capital. Why don't they do it? Why do they insist that everyone be a socialist and not just themselves and their friends?

    • @fleebertreatise1063
      @fleebertreatise1063 3 года назад

      @@freddieg7131 Socialism based on worker self-determination is slavery. How? In the case where we have a capitalist economy full of monopolies, then most people are forced to consume from and work for a few companies that have taken advantage of the structure of markets and government.
      Most people have little wealth and capital to create their own businesses in a way that won't wreck their future if they fail. Those monopolies I mentioned increase their rate of failure as well. That is a huge problem and a barrier to making an economy that works the way that capitalist cheerleaders wish it would.

    • @freddieg7131
      @freddieg7131 3 года назад

      @@fleebertreatise1063 Self-determination is what capitalism is. Voluntary interactions between individuals who are free to trade or do business (or not) with whoever they want. Socialism is force. Individuals are forced to comply with the interactions the state determines to be beneficial, not the individual. There has never been a capitalist economy full of monopolies where people are forded to work for a few companies and there never would be. Under capitalism tiny businesses compete with gigantic ones and eventually one of the tiny businesses will out compete and overtake the leader. Large corporations are like governments. Over time they become rigid and cannot innovate which means they become inefficient compared to competitors. When the government gives a special privilege to a corporation which allows them to operate a monopoly that is not capitalism. That is fascism. Socialism is monopolization of industry by the state and run by the state. So if you are worried about being forced to work for a monopoly you should be worried about socialism.
      Years ago when we were more capitalist workers had higher real wages than they do today. Most people have little wealth and capital today because of our socialist and fascist economic system. Under capitalism you don't need capital to be an entrepreneur, you just need investors. You need to convince people with capital that you can competently use their capital in such a way that you can make a profit for you and them. Having capital is not a pre-requite for success in capitalism. In fact the most successful capitalists tended to start with almost no capital of their own.

    Excellent! This kind of effort demands our support - material, as well as, by talking about it on and off-line; by remembering it when we leave a comment, and by book-marking a couple of the key websites to follow their progress and when they encounter an obstacle we can encourage them or offer suggestions. We have got to stop thinking, speaking, and acting from the perspective of and psychology resulting from a slave mind-set.
    The success and refinement of this group's model could establish a foundational framework that could be built upon and expanded. Having lived in L.A. for a number of years in the past, I am familiar with the area being discussed. I always liked South Central especially that area around Crenshaw. With a victory and successful development of this project, this coalition might propose that the entire Crenshaw district begin redesigning everything toward complete independence and self-sufficiency where there is only a minimal need for and use of money.
    Turn every structure and every road into energy and data producing resources to start. Remove excess and unused structures to reclaim the space. Then construct high-efficiency low-impact multi-level vertical farming co-ops with the goal of growing enough fruits and vegetables [maybe, even nuts] to provide for every resident at no out-of-pocket cost.
    Develop neighborhood and industrial 3-D printing centers and contribute to the advancement of extrusion technology and it's older, but smaller brother, 3-D printing. These technologies offer a very real and substantial likelihood of drastically reducing waste and resource over-shoot in a number of sectors. In fact, one of the compelling aspects is investigating how much and what components of our current household and industrial waste products can be recycled or reconstituted to be used as the material utilized by extrusion and 3-D printers to create their output.
    The point is the creation and development of these technologies will provide another corner-stone of complete community independence and self-sufficiency by providing free community access to and use of them. Thus, being able to build or print a plethora of structures, goods, and products at no cost to citizens.
    There are a few more future development targets I could address, but won't. I'm sure you're ready to move on. So, I will simply restate my opening thought that this kind of effort demands our support. Materialy by volunteering time or professional services, money if possible. And, by talking about what they are trying to do, commenting on-line about it, keep up with them going forward, and when they hit a rough patch, encourage them. This division and distrust and fear our corporate slave-masters employ to manipulate and dominate us are precisely the same as that used by those paragons of Capitalist virtue, Southern plantation owners. Whose lineage, by the way, is still one of the five primary components of the power elite. I digress.
    It is time to admit and face up to the truth that we [you] are in fact and in every practical sense a slave. Once one admits and accepts this one fact, it is possible to think about, imagine, and take action. The time has arrived for us to ignore the slave divisions and slave-language currently dominating our culture and conversations. All of this "Left," "Right," "PC," "Cancel," bullshit is an irrelevant distraction created to quash dissent, our spirit, and our liberty. The forces of tyranny and complete authoritarian domination are consolidating their forces, their wealth, and their power. They are moving briskly to complete the necessary legal and institutional adjustments needed to justify and enforce the new rules and regulations when citizens begin to notice. Soon, the surveillance and government dependence web will be so wide and tight that organizing against it will be, for all practical purposes unlikely to impossible.
    Please stop thinking, living, and fighting with each other like a bunch of demoralized slaves. Wake up, stand up, and ORGANIZE. Do NOT pay any attention that someone or group might seem completely different in their ideas and politics. Inquire, listen, and I believe that nearly all those "other" people want pretty-much if not exactly the same changes and support as you and your cohorts. So, we ORGANIZE and create an unstoppable UNITED front. It is absolutely a fact that people acting in UNITY for a common purpose or goals is unstoppable, short of mass slaughter. Please, watch some Chris Hedges videos on RUclips. And, even though he may not be your normal cup of tea, please find some time to keep up with the work Jimmy Dore is doing by watching his videos and streams on RUclips. This is a great episode. Thanks, Professor Wolff, and all at Democracy at Work.

    “So what does it mean when you have a campaign which is funded very significantly by the wealthy and the powerful? Does anyone seriously believe that the president backed by the corporate world is going to bring about the changes in this country that working families and the middle class and lower-income people desperately need?”

    • @itzenormous
      @itzenormous 3 года назад +7

      Of course not. This system, this government, is completely broken ... unless you realize that it was originally constructed to function this way.
      Who were those men that gathered in the now-famous Constitution Hall in Philadelphia, during the summer of 1787? They were unelected, wealthy bourgeois aristocrats who sought to consolidate power in the form of a strong Federal Government after the debtor rebellions in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania in the previous years. The US Government was created in order to protect the property, the privilege, and the interests of those who own property and extract wealth off of the backs of everyday working people. In this country, our people romanticize earlier times and the so-called 'Founders,' as if they were well-intentioned men who designed to look after the needs of all, and were larger than life heroes. You can see the effects of this indoctrination when you hear frustrated people say things like "We need to take our country back!" As if it were once pure, and became corrupted somewhere along the way.

Low income housing, AT A MINIMUM for those sites, but with modern design and efficiency, not junky "projects". Also, those places should be designed with jobs built in, like gardeners, maintenance and more. And the majority of the income from the tenants should go right back into the people and property, NOT to the banks who do freakin' NOTHING.

    For a country that is driven by public interest rather than private venture, there are infinite work opportunities that could continue the national productivity in times of crippling pandemics. The problem of course in a private venture culture with those opportunities is that it may not produce billionaires. The benefit will be spread over every citizen in the nation. And God forbid, that is not allowed in a “free market” culture!
    Some of those government created jobs, for instance, is getting tap water, sewage, electricity and easy access to every corner in the country, hence resining real estate value of the land and the fixtures on top of it. This would create instant real wealth at the national scale and encourage foreign investors to move in and buy real estate in our nation. Since we operate off fiat money, we could create money, just like the privileged bankers do, and use that money to fund the created government jobs! Another opportunity that works great in a pandemic times is forestation. Everyone who receives unemployment payment should go out there and plant trees on the side of the roads within crowded cities and towns. This improves the carbon emission and increase oxygen in the air!
    Yet another opportunity would be mobilizing household economies. Members of household could engage in work-at-home jobs were products and services created don’t need commute and hence reduce social contact the number one culprit responsible for the spread of the disease!
    Those are just examples that could be used to sustain the economy in times of pandemic, but they all fit into a healthy socialism paradigm than a biased private capitalist system. It is our choice.

    Australia and New Zealand have low populations with specialized export Primary industries. They benefit from cheap imports in a free trade relationship with China. Countries with large populations are loosing many manufacturing jobs to cheaper Asian competitors. Conclusion: Densely populated Industrialized countries must reduce their population through birth control and/or introduce tariffs to preserve enough local manufacturing jobs to provide acceptable levels of employment. The world is in a population and labor over-supply crisis. Free trade appears to be a race to the bottom for cheap labor. Selected tariffs may be unavoidable for over populated industrialized countries. Is this a fair analysis? One glove does not fit all!

    the u.s. government is controlled by the money corporations and oligarchs provide. if we could get the money out of politics. get rid of lobbyists, political donations, etc the people might get some representation that would benefit everyone in our society

      @Larpy McLarperstein you just keep telling yourself you think there is someone in government who actually cares about what you want to believe. There is no one in politics that is going to support the people and you are right the elite has always been in control and are unlikely to give that control up without a fight. maybe it is time.

    I wish all socialists would study more in the whole world , and more seriously what kind of socialism will be by itself more easily transitionned or go into , with minimum class struggles , and max progress in csiences and technologies , into moneyless and with private property turned into use-valued property by instituting new foundations , that would not resemble state-capitalism at all ! I think it will be instituting in a small community, or networks, an Open social political Global University starting all over the world , with a Universal Status , replacing money and a universal crypto not bankable, not alianable from each and not speculative , just cumulated social hourly activities of each member and summued up with her or his Universal Salary at age of 16 , somme 850 dollars in 2020 added to his cumulated hourly activity , representing also her or his social part or social daily income right !
