I think Cinco de Mayo became popular in the US for Mexican-Americans like me is because it is time we can point to that allows us to be proud of being Americans with Mexican heritage. We cannot often be proud of both at the same. Mexican-American War? Nope. Mexican Civil War? Nope. We were not happy with ours and then there is Pancho Villa raiding American towns for supplies. But a fight for freedom against a powerful oppressor (France)? That is so American...

well, apparently France wanted to conquer Mexico and then offer the south of US assistence during your civil war, if the bettle in Puebla would've being lost, slavery in US could've lasted longer... I guess that is why, the part that I don't understand is why that date was chosen to be celebrated heavily abroad when in Mexico is just another day... is not even directly related with US lol

@@TequilaPrincessMx I cannot speak on its popularity in the world. Maybe they see Americans having another excuse for a party and say "We can do that!".

@@TequilaPrincessMx One of my lifelong hobbies is history. Yes, the rebels asked France for help in exchange for recognizing the conquest of Mexico. France was never going to recognize the Confederacy. The French were not afraid of Lincoln, but it would cost more money. "Recognizing" would give Lincoln the excuse to inspect French ships. "Helping" would give Lincoln the excuse to sink them. France WAS AFRAID that the UK or Spain would support the North and Mexico. Not out of kindness, but to knock France down a bit in the European game of empires.
