- Hey Guys, this video shows the 1970 Karmann Ghia convertible I picked up in Virginia in 2017 . I am looking forward to working on this vert in spring.
Thank you for the comments & likes Guys , much appreciated !
Glad to see father and son doing projects

wow really nice and solid ghia!
Thank you Vw Lover , happy to have it :)
One can tell by the way he speaks to his sonJosh has a loving father....what a difference a good father makes...wonderful to see...My stepfather came straight from hell..well thats almost 60 years ago..I healed-cheers.Rogers
Thank you , I think more than a few us have had similar childhoods , cheers
It's always good to see a Dad spending some quality time with his son. God job man!. VW fan for life!
Thank you !
Yeah, blasting the exhaust fumes directly in the face, very caring.
Very nice. I'm slowly getting a 1974 Karmann Ghia autostick coupe back on the road after having sat in storage for over a decade.
Nice ! Enjoy it 👍
Buddy! Good job on your boy car schooling, his hook buddy,no turn back ,future auto engineer, god bless him.
Thank you for the kind words David , much appreciated
im glad to see you get your son involved in this, hopefully he will want to learn more as he grows up and want to save cars too!!
Thank you , much appreciated
Very rare to see a kid not afraid of hard work. The car is starting to look good, can’t wait to see it finished.
hey RK02 , he is a very hard worker & loves yard work too ! I am looking forward to making it a driver this spring / summer . Thank you for the comment , i appreciate it !
Your teaching your son well. He’ll be a good man when he grows up.
Thank you Johnny , I'm trying , very much appreciated
1,000 thumbs up for Josh! Keep it real big man!
I like your 5 year old helper!
So many projects, so little time...always good to keep your son interested .
👍, very true , thank you Buddy
That's one of the better Ghia's...hardly any rust and it's cleaning up nicely....that a a sleeper of a good find.
thank you , I agree , very happy with it , don't let my tone fool ya lol . Thank you for the comment
I'd start with the Ghia. I saw a 65 bug the other day and ask the kid if it was for sale. He said he was going to try to restore it. It looked in pretty good shape. Mostly original I think. Always looking for cars to add to you collection.
what color was it ? haha , thanks.
@@5150mxVW it was a blueish green
Great job Josh!
:),👍
awesome vid. Nice way to put the ribbons on a Sunday evening.
thank you 672 ! I appreciate it !
Josh is going to grow up and be the best mechanic ever ! Love it !
thank you MR Mac , very much appreciated
That's how they start off. Pretty soon he'll be looking back on these early years talking fondly about how he restored the chrome.
Your lil' boy is so cute !!! And so helpful ! I love the way you guide him, patiently, letting him learn hands on. Precious moments for both of you.
I wish I had a boy like that but we could'nt have kids. Oh well... maybe in another life.
It's amazing how you can buff out old vw paint.
Early Vw's had single stage paint with the clear coat mixed in the paint. Newer cars use stage 2 paint with baseboat/clearcoat and if you don't constantly wax stage 2 the clear peals off unless you lay extra clearcoat layers. I like stage one and have redone many.
@@BadBrad23 indeed! Same here!
1967 fun car nice looking convertible Ghia use to work on them in 70's had a good teacher's one work in the factory during the WW2, Josh is a hard worker for sure !!!; )
Good times I bet , thank you Richard
You teaching your son some of the most valuable lessons he will learn about respecting the past as he looks to the future. he's going to grow up to be a fine young man.
Thank you for the kind words Douglas , very much appreciated
God bless you, you’re a good dad.
thank you for the kind words , being a Dad is incredible
Man I've been into vw' s since 1983 and I love "67" bugs, can't wait until I get one then I'll feel complete car wise.
👍
Awwww.... bringing them home is all of the fun! 😀👍😀👍😀
it is a ton of fun , seeing them for the first time , getting them home and picking through them
that is an angel from heaven
:) , thank you
Your son is cute and a good helper too!
:) , thank you , I appreciate it
Amazing. I really dont know how you find all these. Thank you for saving them before they get scraped. Really amazing.
I was Vw Hunting pretty hard from 2015-2018 , now it's time to set up shop and do some work.....with a few hunts mixed in here and there :) . Thank you VP.
@@5150mxVW still amazing stories. I love when I get your notifications. Never old. Thanks again for all you do for our great car.
- KEEP DUBBING -
hard to believe but the videos get better every time. Can only dream of barn finds here in Atlantis Canada as the salt has devoured all our classic stuff.
Hi Brian , I shot a lot of video this weekend and nothing really came of it . SO , I though I'd show the vid of me picking up the 70 vert most of u have seen in the garage . thank you for the kind words , much appreciated !
Great kid, you made him a car guy, nice Ghia
Thank you GP73 ...nice GP ! man , you do not see many of those early Grand Prix anymore or back then for that matter ! . My friend's Dad had a 73 or 74 back in like 81 , what a sweet car !
5150mxVW Thanks it's not worth a million dollars, but when I pull into any car show, w my factory sunroof open, it's a pretty certain thing that I'm the only one there with one, amongst 10,000 Camaros and Vettes, thats y I love your Karman Ghia, not many around, take care of that great kid, he's something else
Great project ... cool to see your son working with you . Now that’s a project
:) , great comment Dave , couldn't agree more , thank you
Little Josh...too cute. My vote is for a period correct late 60's early 70's Baja. That was my plan when I owned it.
:) .....& previous owners blessing lol , nice 👍
Jason I see the apple didn't fall far from the tree ! Awesome Josh ! Glad he's being safe ! Glasses and dloves
:) , Hi Ted , thank you VERY much !
Glad to see you including your son in your projects.
:), he is into it , he was 5 in the 2017 summer Ghia shots
Great body, awesome helper!
Hi Jeffery , yes , that car is pretty solid for an east coast Ghia , very happy to have it ! Thank you for the comment
I like the baby window
thank you for the comment Kaleo
Great little helper you've got there.
I agree , thank you William :)
It's funny the last project home gets all the attention , until the next one rolls on in, keep up the good work
haha , I work on them all the time , I just don't film it all .... & thank you
Jason, Josh is a great helper! I would put the 2384cc engine in the Ghia and the 1700cc in the black 67. That way the Ghia convertible would be a 356 killer and being a convertible would be a blast to drive fast!
:), Thanks Dave . The 1776 would be a 356 killer :)....the Ghia vert is just going get a refresh and driven , we shall see . Thank you for the comments👍
@@5150mxVW Highway to hell by AC/DC blasting away on the stereo, maybe?
Josh - great video, I have to take notes to stay straight on all your VW's. So many cars / projects. Maybe in the future we can see another collaboration with the boys up North and more sharing of your projects. Great collection - keep the videos coming. Chuck in NE Kansas
Thank you Chuck . You don't have to twist my arm to hang out with the NH boys . I expect a video in the next few weeks for that👍. Thank you for the kind words Chuck , much appreciated .
Great video! I want to reincarnate myself to be like Josh and live at your house! Great upbringing. It reminds me of me! My oldest brother ran an auto repair business out of our garage of my parents house. There would be 5 to 10 cars parked along the avenue that he and workers would complete work on daily. Amazed that he got away with that back then as he essentially ran a full-time business in a residential zone back in 1978-1986. I was always hanging out and watching VW's engine rebuilds and I also help striping junk VW's for parts. He would give me a Philips screw driver and I would remove all the light lenses and whatever I could before the junk wrecker came to remove the vehicle. -Let me know the next time your going back to Virginia and I can meet you along I-84! -LOL
Sounds like some fun times Kevin , thank you for sharing . 78-86 , not a bad decade either ! :)....edit , ok , 8 years lol
That's a handsome boy and a wonderful dad there. I'm sure he's really grown up.
Karmann Ghias are absolutely gorgeous cars and their value has gone through the roof in the recent years, it's insane there are any of them abandoned and rotting away.
they were rotted up in within 5 years .....sold this one to my friend for pennies :)
Cool find can't wait to see you start to bring them back! 👍 👍
Hi Bert , thank you , me too !
Approx 8:00 minutes in is the best part. Good kid just wants to make dad happy while having a great time. Miss when mine were young bro. Enjoy it while it lasts. Best of luck my friend.
Thank you Greg , well said
Great kid!!!
thank you Bill , we appreciate it !
Nice Ghia convertible. Looks like it going to clean up nice. Lucky man. And have a good helper.
Good job Josh 👍 someday you will be able to build a karmann ghia yourself and have some great memories working with your daddy!
:)👍
You're a great dad! I vote you put the 67 together with the hot rod engine!
Thank you Dave . Joshua makes it pretty easy :)....that might be the plan , I don't mind a stock ghia vert .
Josh reminds me a lot of my girlfriend's youngest boy. So inquisitive and eager to help. Lucky his dad is into cars. It's a good foundation. Also nice find on that Ghia. It's a shame those two coupes were returning to the earth but at least you'll save this one and get her back on the road. You're lucky to have them be so available out east. Here in Dallas they're pretty difficult to come by as far as decent fixer uppers go. They're either REALLY bad or $10,000.
thank you Shane ....yeah , 20 hour round trip for those Ghia's ....ugh lol :)
@@5150mxVW That's not bad. I did a 16 hour round trip to Oklahoma to get a 57 Chevy a few months back. It should have been a 10 hour trip, lol.
What a cute little guy, I love Josh, great apprentice!
:) , thank you Dave !
Beautiful VWs I had 2 bugs and 1 72 Ghia my favorite, Im 61 planning to buy one for my ritirement project, Im a 35 year airline mech.
awesome , careful with the Ghia's , the 1st one I bought was full of bondo ....i see Ghias on bring a trailer full of bondo selling for 40-50k , I feel really bad for the buyers . At least my bondo vert ghia only set me back 7500 .
Great Videos Love watching you and your son
Thank you , much appreciated !
Couple of old Triumphs, oh myyyy!
very cool indeed
I would swap them. I wish that my dad would have let me help him. Great video!
looking that way , thank you Ivor !
I was amazed at the white Beetle, because it seems to be that someone has surgically implanted the cool oval type rear window onto a later model with larger side windows! This would make it lighter inside, the original cars with oval windows were just too dark inside. If my eyesight was still precise enough for driving, I would buy it! Certainly, when it also is already fitted with a 1700 engine! But your red convertible K.G. is also beautiful
AND so shiny! The paint is still good on this one!
Hi , that was a very clean install as well .....Mustie1 owns the red Ghia now 👍
Nice looking car! Great find! You really do have an excellent helper!
thank you very much
Many thanks for sharing with us. I would keep the ghia stock and preserve it rather than restore it given it is in such a good condition. I would also fit a period correct stock engine. Nothing beats stock. A big well done for your young helper! Keeping the vw legend alive 😀
Hi 63vw , I do have a B6 motor for it somewhere , we shall see , I don't mind a stock 1600 at all . Thank you for the comment and kind words , I appreciate it
You should do what you want and I'll respect it, but since you asked... that shell looks ready to make a solid baja! I kinda like the bugeye look myself. Whatever you choose, have fun with it!
Thank you HG , we shall see
Awesome job keep up the vw life 👍👍👍👏👏👏👏
thank you Daniel , for sure👍
Great video as usual Jason &son keep them coming 😊👍
thank you toolman , much appreciated !👍
I’d take that Ranchero in a heartbeat! Those are getting really hard to find these days...
Josh looks like he’s handled a screwdriver a time or two.👍🏻
Hi John , he traded in a Boss 302 for that Ranchero ! Josh was 5 there , he loves his tools lol👍
Nice find looking good man
Thank you Michael , I appreciate it !
You have a great little helper in Josh. You'll have that car done in no time. lol
indeed ! very blessed to have him , thank you
Ghia convertible is my dream car... I have a 65 bug that I love
Hi Seth , the Ghia's are sweet , what color is your 65 ?
@@5150mxVW Shellie is a peach color
The patina on those tail lights on the 67 oval special is awesome! I want them lol
Josh’s screwdriver in his pocket😂too cute
These two beauties? (Ghia's) Only a mother could love those two.
HAHAHAHA ! 👍. The nose of that white 69 coupe was coming apart on the highway !!!
Good job, great kid.
:) , thank you Robert
Josh doing all the work😎
as usual :)
So cute to see your boy screwing in the taillight, i say he will follow your footsteps or already is.
:) , thank you Paul
i think i remember summer. great video Josh did a great job on the chrome BIG THUMBS UP
I know , it was nice to see green again ! thank you for the " snow fun " idea , Joshua has been having a blast !

Greets from Germany😊👍
Your boy is just too damn cute! Good hand too
Thank you Kelly !!!!!!!👍
How can anybody not like these amazing finds. Never mind 6. I know these 6 dont stop you. Probally the same ones over and over every video.
no worries VWplanet , plenty of positive vibes here :)👍
Got to love participating with dad.
:) , thank you Glenn
Love your son. Josh is getting big wow man! Soon he’ll be a driver!
Thank you Jerome , he’s driven my 66 sunroof car in a non used development....can’t put that on RUclips 😆
I think your son needs a raise ! 😆 I'm with mustie trike that 67
Haha, he gets paid pretty well and already has his first 3 cars picked out that will be his lol.....Mustie1 is more than welcome to come back and drag a chassis home for a trike ...I've still got some motocrossIN' to do in this old body :)
👍👌👏
Your little chrome polishing son did well (5 yo at this time and a petrolhead already). Congrats for that and the Karmann convertible.
Best regards luck and health to you, your family and all your VW colleagues/pals.
CC ! missed this one , thank you ! Best regards , luck and health to you always my friend

Thanks for replying. No problem, it was already the second time I watched and commented this vid.
Sincerely yours.
Baja the 67 body 👌👌
we shall see :), thank you for the comment Joe
Great finds for someone to restore. Thumbs up.
thank you , the 70 went to a great home :)
Your son is awesome.
Takes a good father to create a good son. Josh has no idea how lucky he is.
thank you Guys
I thought the bumper was painted silver until you got close to it! It should be easy to polish right up with some 0000 steel wool and dish soap, too! I'll try the C. Brassy sometime soon, never used it!
C. Brassy really is Great stuff, and if it's even worse than that oxidation, recommend NeverDull or one its many copy-cats.
Brassy for me , period
White diamond is pretty good stuff also.@@5150mxVW
A decent cutting/polish compound is worth a try.
Nice find. Thank you for sharing
The motor would work well in the Ghia, I like them but I way to big and tall cannot fit into the Ghia, your helper doing a great Job my son started helping me on his vw when he was 3 not he is 30 still like them but not so much into working on them once dad done all the work enjoy driving them, his hobby building computers, which is cool built me a super computer .
Hi Dan , yeah , 6-5 in a ghia ? probably not ....that is cool he built you a nice computer👍
Josh does a good job, "probably" he had a good teacher. grins
The Karmann is a beauty, with some polishing (the paint isnt acryl yet?) and welding
you could bring it back to its former glory.
:), thank you Z B , I appreciate it !
Nice to see your son getting his hands dirty. Subscribed,
:), thank you, he loves his tools and is a very hard worker ....& thank you for the sub
I always had issues with the 1776. My buddy had a '70 Ghia Pearl White 10k paint job and I built a 1776 for him from scratch. It had dual Dellortos 44's I think (25 years ago) and Engle 110 cam, couterweighted crank. Went to assemble and it seized. The line bore was cut wrong. Then he wanted those stupid elephant feet rocker screws one broke and he took to guy that balanced the carbs running wrong on 3 cyls. I fixed it right after that and ran great but still would go with all stock engine. Built over 85 from scratch with no fails. The main issue I had was the machine shop didn't know how to do it right.
I wouldn't have an issue with 1600 or 1641 with small duals , my stock 71 Ghia is a great driver ! 1776's are generally known as a great motor though .
Back to the future for you. ;-)
haha ! yeah , I think I'd set it for 1985
Great video. New sub coming over from Mustie1 and vwnut1967. Very cool having you son there with you helping out.
Hi Mark , he loves it , thank you for dropping in and the sub .
Looks like a good one. Enjoyed your video . I would drop the 17.76 in the ghia.
Thank you Myron , it would be a great motor for that vert :)
Awesome video & a great helper
thank you Ronald , we appreciate it
I'd use the good Beetle body to replace the rusted out one,the 1776cc engine would've been an improvement over the old 1100 & 1200 cc engine that my dad ran in his Baja Beetle,I know someone who had an early 1980's model Beetle which ran a Porsche independent rear end in it & I think it ran a big bore kit on a 1776 cc engine so it ended up being about 2 litres in capacity, it held onto the road really well at 160 km/h.
With the Karman Ghia, it's good that the body is in good condition,it's just a matter of finding a motor for it.
When I did work experience for a mechanic back in 1993,his son had a Karman Ghia wagon which he rebuilt the 1600cc engine in.
He thrashed it & went on about it being 100% better when he first rebuilt it !
good job josh , nice car , brilliant dad .
all the best , john uk london
Thank you Joun , we appreciate it , all the best to you as well .
Looks gewd, looks different now ! Looks smooth and shiny with col. Brassy lol.. all kiddin a side that chrome cleaner did a great job.
As for 67 ....take cleanest 1 and you got to use 1776cc in the Ghia, after mouse cleaning !..haha :)
sounds good William , thank you for always being here , I appreciate it ! 👍
I could’ve bought those over the last two years but didn’t have the time to go get them. Have 11 other Ghias (9 verts) I’d picked up. Good luck!
took me 2 years to buy then too lol . I'm afraid to count how many Ghia's I have but not even close to 9 verts 👍...thank u
Love your videos keep them coming. Wish I had one of them cars always did.
Great Job.
thank you
