The golden berry is called 姑娘果(young girl fruit) or 燈籠果(lantern fruit) in chinese. I personally love it and most of the ones I've had back in China are really sweet. My grandma said when they were young they'd pick the slightly unripe, green fruits, use a toothpick to carefully scrape the flesh and seeds out, and bite the empty outer skin which makes a loud popping noise because of the air trapped inside!
