  • Here is a video I took of the colourful and historic trams of Milan's system on 3rd and 6th November 2022. The network is still at the old Italian standard guage of 1445mm (1435mm is the standard now).
At one point, the trams were painted in a dull corporate orange, but now the base colour is cream and yellow. Many trams carry colourful advertising vinyls on this.
Amusingly, the streetcars have been providing zero emissions transport for nearly 100 years (they are from 1928)- they are frequently followed around by new electric buses boasting about their green credentials! They trams are quiet on this matter!
The video starts at Caiazzo- 1928 streecars 1732, 1880 and 1809 are seen on route 1 services.
Two more 1928 streetcars (1883 and 1935) are then seen running by La Scala Operahouse, again on route 1.
Moving to Corso Magenta, Streetcars 1999, 1842 and 1878 run by on route 19.
Further down the street, 1970s vintage 49xx series JumboTram 4962 is still in the old corporate orange colours. 4995 then comes by, with its orange colours hidden by adverts. These trams are running on route 16.
    A 1950s vintage 46xx tram (no 4602) then comes by with a 19 service.
Now we are in Via Vincenzo Monti- an identified route 16 tram passes by in the distance.
Streecar 1870 runs by with no 19 service.
At the Via Enzio Biondi stop, 4605 heads back into the city centre on route 19.
Back at Corso Magenta, Jumbo 4902 heads out of town on route 16. This is one of this series of trams to be refitted- the revamp features more pleasant styling, including new lights and a distintively shaped rear window. A route 19 47xx series tram follows on. The 47xx is basically a second series of the 46xx, with some technical improvements.
Streetcar 1715 arrives to take us back into the city centre.
At Cordusio unrefitted Jumbo 4967 passes revamped 4928 on service 12.
Moving on to route 16, I managed to film three Jumbos running in quick succession in Via Alfonso Lamarmora. First up is revamped 4908, then unrevamped 4995, then revamped 4916- a good opportunity to compare the changes!
Finally, I videoed a short ride on 4606 to Via Larga (route 19). We pass 1721, which has been recently revamped, Jumbo 4970 and finally see our first modern generation tram, 7617. This is a Hitachi (ex-Ansaldo-Breda) Sirio series tram, with styling by Pininfarina. The 75 76xx series are called "Sirietto" (baby Sirio) as it is shorter than the original 71xx series.
4606 then heads off on its way.
