Well told! Where did u learn about a bears circle back tactic? Very few know about that. Idaho & Montanas grizzlies are more aggressive than most. Smaller but meaner. While camping in Idaho by a shallow but wide river, we had a griz circling our camp all day popping its jaws but staying just out of sight. Being from Alaska i had my 45/70 on the states picnic table close just in case. Shortly after dark i took a picture of my wife sitting at the table with the Coleman lantern going. Old flashcube type camera. After getting back to Alaska turned the films in to be developed. Imagine our surprise to see the grizzly in the rushing water only inches deep sneaking up on my wife using her shadow from the lantern to hide itself. It was only 10 feet away & NEITHER of us knew it til the pictures came back. The flash going off in its face must have spooked it into leaving. It could have hit us both before i could have grabbed the rifle had it charged from that close.

They are only “ scary “ if a human pursues them and harasses them to desperation. I mean , come on….the Bears aren’t barging thru peoples bedrooms, trying to shoot them with arrows, break their bones, and then kill them.
I have Bears occasionally in my pastures. They don’t bother me, my dogs, or my horses, and we don’t bother them. I don’t allow ANY shooting of anything on this farm, period. 🤷🏻‍♂️.
“ if “ one of those Bears started marauding up around my barn, or on my patio, then it might get shot. And I would feel bad but I would protect my own. Recently a very young Bear was alone, on my road, right at the end of my driveway, and I was VERY cautious for a couple of days, because I had no clue where it’s Mom was. I feel pretty sure she was close, but staying out of sight. That’s ok with me. 🤷🏻‍♂️

While living in Minneapolis a friend (Mark, but everyone else called him Snake), invited me to go visit a place that a man lived that fed and welcomed black bears crossing the Minnesota/Canadian border. This was a famous place for the locals up by Ely, Minnesota. Shooney's was the name of the camp I think, but this was 93-94. We parked the car on the property and I just watched a few bears scampering around the place from the safety of my car. After awhile we got out and walked around, and I went over the the owners trailer and noticed there were bars around all the windows and doors. I was standing near the woods and two bear cubs, standing about 2 feet high on there legs ran up to me. I looked down and one of the bear cubs had put on of its paws on my thigh and was looking up at me and I was looking down at the cub. Suddenly i heard a noise come out of the woods some weird animal call and I fugured it was their Mom because they both took off in the flash of a second. That was a very risky thing to do, and I would never do something like that now expecially after watching a lot of Scary Bear Attacks.

At the end of the day, if a rancher sets up an all you can eat buffet for Grizzlies in the rugged mountains he should understand the dangers.. and will rightfully kill any threat to it. Not to mention the notoriety a person who did that line of work would achieve. Ike lived in an era when life was cheap, they hung cattle rustlers so killing a grizzly who has killed cows or someone's favorite horse is naturally going to be an option. The govt could have stopped paying the bounties so the bounties perpetuated the attitude of eradicating grizzlies. One way to win the coveted Darwin Award is to stubbornly ignore the CLEAR AND PRESENT warning signs of old age. The fact that the half blind, half deaf old hunter went alone into thick bush following a massive grizzly is pure, unadulterated stupidity. Apparently, not everything get wiser with age, tf was he thinking 😑

I’ve lived in Oregon for almost 30 years now. I live in a very rural area.
I remember as a kid asking my dad why people hunt. Why it could be “good”.
I remember my dad saying something like “well, it’s humane. They will starve in the winter otherwise so it’s better they get harvested”.
We live on the coast. It rarely snows. When it does it’s super brief. I just don’t believe that theory.
In reality we keep these animal population low to keep us humans more comfortable. In general. My opinion.
I feel bad for animals looked at as a menace because us humans breed and breed taking over their home.

@Pat Luxor I understand. But when you think about it… bears and their ancestors were here WAY before us. ❤️
It’s nice when we can all live in harmony. Really it’s often ruined (in my opinion) of campers leaving food out, and just taking over so much of their territory. I fear someday in the future that these animals will only exist in highly protected areas. I don’t have issues at all with these protected areas but I can tell you “wild” animals behave very different in these areas.
Oregon for example. I’ve lived in the wilderness for years here. Yet I’ve personally only seen a wild elk herd maybe 4 times in over 30 years. I’m not a regular hunter so.
But you go to our elk viewing area that prohibits hunters and it’s an elk view spot, you will see tons of elk. Just laying around, not afraid of humans at all.
The animals change when they are protected. I think it’s good and bad. Bad if it’s a carnivore animal for sure. We don’t want carnivores not afraid of people.

I don't know how this event affected the bear population in that area as I have no data on that. But, I don't agree with allowing anyone to go out and shoot any species without regulations. Of course, in the 19th century I don't think there were any at all. But surely overhunting has been the cause of many animal extinctions, or low numbers, and has upset the balance of the natural order. Messing with mother nature is never a good idea. We often don't see the negative affects until it's way too late. Thanks for another great video!

Hunting fees are what is used to keep populations healthy. Modern day hunting is without a doubt responsible for saving many species. Especially in developing nations, think Africa. I don't hunt,am not interested in it,but without the huge fees to hunt a elephant there would be far fewer of them, perhaps even none. Ignorance is deadly.

Great stories. Sorry for loss of human life. Definitely wrong decisions my early settlers to have killed of so many grizz, wolf, buffalo and other species. Natives lived and didn’t lack from these amazing predators. White man of course had diff way of life but still didn’t require to kill ‘em all off. Natives and settlers could have benefited much more from each other.

Agreed. All who came to the New World were not like the Pilgrims - God-fearing and respectful toward others.
Many came with greed in their hearts and were constantly despising the natives, taking advantage of them and breaking agreements.
Government officials especially, just as now, cared more about obtaining power and riches than serving the people.
Now we're reaping what we have sown, and looks like China is benefiting - for now.

Um noooooo I think you guys take a small minority of people and put everyone in that class. There wasn't a mc Donald's to drive you horse up to and get food. These people had cattle to protect . No electricity, a fence back then wasn't stopping a grizzly. God put a abundance of food on the earth . You ever watch a large male grizzly shredd 2 little grizzly cubs up . There running out of room in the lower 48 . Your going to see more bear attacks you probably never heard of.

Some "Native American" tribes would drive tens of thousands of buffalo over a cliff which killed all of them, then they would go and cut out the tongues and leave the ENTIRE remaining animal to rot in the sun. How's THAT for conservation.

We live in a time where we are spoiled and have the luxury to put the lives of other species on some higher pedestal than our own, but back then times were much harder and Ike did a job that, while not pleasant, was a necessity for many folks on the frontier.

Old Ike was performing an essential function. There are still bears in certain areas such as Yellowstone and Glacier national park, so some have been preserved. There can be a balance between humans' need for safety and animals' need for habitat.

I don't blame Ike for doing what he did for a living. Now a days we know better and usually can use other means of bear control and killing them is a last resort. In his day they didn't have that knowledge or understanding so they did what they had to do to survive in the wilderness.
I've said before that hunting an apex predator is one of the most dangerous sports to participate in. A predator is a hunter too and when the hunt is on they know what you are doing.
