In my POV, I think the story behind this is that in this village where White lives, there's a belief (shown on the mural) that the Black Swan will come and take all the young boys with white hair away. Thus, before their coming of age, White was raised as a girl to prevent this from happening but they ended up embracing it anyway. White ended up running into the Black Swan one day but soon found out that she wasn't anything like in the mural at all. They became friends and then slowly their relationship blossomed. After White's coming of age ceremony, they immidiately went to the Black Swan to confess and since then the two become each other's (as shown in their exchanged braid of hair).
@@nishibrisko06 I think the black character, who is supposed to be a Black Swan, is a girl, while the White haired character, is a boy - you can see he has no breasts when he takes this clothes off. Of course, it could be that this White haired character is a girl with small to no breast development. The idea of dressing the White character as a girl is probably related to the beliefs of this village - as I think that they actually marry one white haired person to the black swan, in order to prevent this mythical creature from kidnapping people from the village, they dress the sacrifice with girl clothes to symbolize he/she is the swan's bride.
Still can't get over the scene at 5:00, the white-haired boy used to be shorter than the black swan so they looked down out of habit but then realize he has grown much taller now. That scene conveys so much emotions even without a single word being uttered, it's a goddamn masterpiece qwq

for everyone asking: In the video it appears that the white-hair is most likely male. There is no evidence on which black is, or if they're simply genderless as they seem to be a kind of mystical creature. Regardless, the main focus of the video is the love between the two. White meets black as part of a ritual based on a prophecy. It is about a relationship that stretches beyond the races of the two (human and non-human; black swan). Black is hesitant and fears that white won't accept the non-human part of themselves, but as the seasons pass embraces the happiness of meeting white, and they become a pair as seen by giving locks of hair to each other. There is a simple beauty in seeing their love grow over the seasons. Race or gender never hindered them in the end; they just love to be with each other.
@@fourthpanda no I’ll say the reason he dressed up as a boy is probably because one of the scenes shows a drawing with the creature taking a baby boy so I’ll infer that he was kind of forced to dress like that to not be taken away.
It can also be left ambiguoys since the MV is directly using mixed Nlrdic folklore and pagan beliefs, where depending on the country, the characters would have different genders. While the artist confirmed the white character here to be male, he is depicted as Saint Lucia, a maiden who brings light to the darkness, which is almost exclusively depicted as being female.
this mv is absolutely beautiful. the interpretation of the story is free, but i interpreted it as a kind of "forbidden" love story. the black swan, a girl, is part of the legend of that village, where she catches the little boys with white hair. then, snow white, a boy (i suppose, 'cause of the scene where he removes his clothes and has no chest), dresses like a 'girl' so as not to be "kidnapped" by the swan of the legend. in the end, his curiosity was greater and he went in search of the swan, ending up falling in love (both, as you can see at the end). my favorite part is at the end when they are in the sand and snow white has short hair and is taller (with those traits i also assumed it was a boy, but idk), and they are both smiling. regardless of the actual gender of the characters, this is a very beautiful story and the animation is amazing. it could be two girls, two boys or a boy and a girl, as i interpreted it, but that doesn't matter, the story itself carries great meaning. thanks eve for another work of art.
@Sonyericsson117 yeah, he grows too, 'cause he's a human, but if u look at it metaphorically u will realize that they also deal with mortality and love (yk actually this video can be interpreted in many ways and for me that's brilliant).
I like to think in the end she is shaking her head because the boy is wanting to go back with her (hence the short hair, dressing more like a boy to go along with the 'kidnaps boys' story) but she shakes her head because she wants him to live a happy life with the people
I think the character with black hair is inspired by the Swan of Tuonela, and it's pretty cool to see that Finnish mythology in a Japanese music video! If I'm not mistaken, the swan of tuonela (portrayed as a black swan) is some sort of guard/creature of the Finnish underworld/afterlife. It carries souls to the bottom of the watery afterlife where souls will stay there in eternal slumber, hence the black-haired guy being underwater at first, and the swans at the start of the song. Plus the village kinda looks Nordic-inspired, so that's pretty cool!
the song sounds very different (in a good way) than most of EVE's music and the animation is fantastic. I really love these character and outfit designs. They make the fictional world feel alive
the ending scene with them walking together, having an earring of each other's hair, with the black haired person now looking up to the white haired person is so lovely but also bittersweet to me. life obviously just moves on and around without the spirit (that shot of them surrounded by the skeletons of those long dead; one might even say they are used to being left behind) and our lovely white haired mortal is by definition all about change bc that is life itself (the different haircuts, the shot of them clutching their throat.. their voice starting to change?); but its okay because the time still spent with each other is worth it, worth everything. editing bc i forgot to say: another banger as always, eve. what a wonderful gift this holiday season
The black char looks like a god of some kind whereas the white one is human. Seems the story of falling in love with a god. Also in the last scene her height is greater than the black one, looking like she has aged. The in between ritual also looks like a ritual to me too where they are sacrificing one of them to the god they worship.
This comment is probably going to get buried, but I wanted to post some information about the background of this MV and my personal interpretation of some of it here. Most of this was originally part of a large comment thread, but the original comment was deleted, so I'm compiling and reposting it here for anyone curious for further discussion who happens to stumble across it: From my understanding, a lot of this is based on Nordic mythology and tradition. The black-haired person represents the Lady of the Lake (seen at 0:39), who is specified in Nordic folklore to be a female water spirit. At 3:04, we see the white-haired person wearing white robes and carrying candles, which seems to take inspiration from the Lucia tradition from Nordic cultures. It's a bit much to explain here so I won't get into the details, but Lucia is supposedly the ancient bearer of light for the dark Nordic winters. She is always depicted as female, and is based on the real historical figure Saint Lucia, who was a female Christian martyr. All this is to say that at the very least, both figures that the two characters in the MV are inspired by are traditionally female, so despite their androgynous appearance, I think they're meant to be women (or at least feminine). The question of the gender of our main characters (especially the white-haired person) seems to be a popular topic of discussion. In particular, we see at 2:31 that the white-haired character is depicted with a flat chest and possibly an Adam's apple. I will also note that at 2:28, the white-haired person seems to be taking off a dress-not just a long robe-which is an interesting detail since dresses are obviously a traditionally feminine piece of clothing, even within Nordic tradition and culture. I think this could be interpreted in many ways (perhaps she's a transgender woman?), but perhaps the ambiguity around the white-haired character's gender is meant to make the character more relatable to a broader audience. Though I can't say for sure, these details were definitely a deliberate choice on the artist's behalf. If you ask me though, I personally believe that this is just a way to provide some semblance of queer representation while providing an outlet for plausible deniability in the case of some sort of homophobic backlash. I think this is sort of a common trend with queer representation in Japanese media, which is understandable considering the generally more conservative culture. I don't want to accuse anyone involved in the production of this music video of "copping out" of explicit LGBTQ representation, since I understand this is just an unfortunate consequence of producing anything in a society where homophobia can influence consumer decisions (we see this all the time in Western media too!). I still think this MV is really beautiful! I just wish we lived in a world where queer relationships being depicted as ambiguous wasn't normalized or necessary.
thank you for this!! its so frustrating to watch people in these comments here arguing and cussing each other assuming their gender without further explanation
it's actually not surprising for an mv to have better quality animation. if an entire season of an anime had this high quality of animation for the entire show their budget would have to be insane. but for a 5 minute music video you can maintain this level of detail and quality.
@@sillyd0g also the animators on an mv has quite a lot time to finish it while seasonal anime animators have to create 20 minutes of drawings in one week every week for like 2 months on a shoestring budget and no sleep
This literally could’ve been adapted into a movie or 12-episode series, the story was compelling and the animation is so lovely to look at. Also, does this give anyone else Moshang or Beefleaf vibes? Is it just me? I think it’s just me 😅
Masterpiece. I could describe it in many ways using pretty colorful words and build complex ideas, but this is enough. This word can tell everything by itself.
It’s amazing to think that so many people from around the world come to listen to an amazing artist. music really is a universal language, love from Texas.
Both animation and song are beautiful and mesmerizing! But the story behind it makes me curious so I've thought of a theory. The main focus in the song are: Black haired person (a God-like creature), Long white haired person and their short haired version (human). I'm not sure about gender so I'll try to be neutral. The two met and gradually a special bond appeared between them. Black was lonely after many decades until they met, and it seems like White had grown up and changed from long hair to short hair through time. In the beginning, White had long hair and shorter than Black, later he cut his hair short and became taller than Black. They surely spent a long time together. I think this's a very beautiful metaphorical image for a good relationship, through the time they spends together they will grow up and become a better version. A special detail if you notice, White had earrings made by the white hair and Black had braid, in the end they exchange their hairs to each other. I think it means both souls has become one and inside them there's always a part of the others. The fact that Black and White seem to be different races, and both of them might be same gender also show that no matter who you are, love will win. That's what I think! I might be wrong but I wanna share this! It's a really beautiful song~
I like your interpretation. My theory is that black has to leave white when the season ends, because black is a goose/ goose-like divine being. In the first scene they have the earrings. So this is when black returns to see white again.
@@chookitypah8305 You got a point!! I agree, it seems like each times they met, they were always beside the shore. Maybe that's the place they met and also parted away for sometimes
i think that white is also a divinity, who’s in love with black. one day Black got a malediction ( in the lyrics it says smt like « until the spell gets off » ) wich consist for him to turn into a bird, but he returns into his human form one day per year (or idk). I think that white maybe a divinity cause it’s gender isn’t clear at all just like black’s gender actually. So maybe white is just a person dressing as a girl, or maybe it’s because it’s represented as a divinity ( because actually in some cultures i think god(esse) don’t have a gender and can actually change it whenever they want to ). Or maybe i m just wrong and white is a human x) Furthermore i think the malediction on black is related to this egg we see in the MV and i can’t really explain myself what is it for.
This deserves an anime series or at minimum a short movie. It would criminal if it doesn't...

for everyone asking: In the video it appears that the white-hair is most likely male.

I think the getting taller part is a way of showing how mortal life flows and changes meanwhile the black swan stays the same
@@capybaraenjoyer i agree! and thinking about it, it's sad to think that even though they love each other, mortality separates them
@Sonyericsson117 yeah, he grows too, 'cause he's a human, but if u look at it metaphorically u will realize that they also deal with mortality and love (yk actually this video can be interpreted in many ways and for me that's brilliant).
I like to think in the end she is shaking her head because the boy is wanting to go back with her (hence the short hair, dressing more like a boy to go along with the 'kidnaps boys' story) but she shakes her head because she wants him to live a happy life with the people
@Sonyericsson117 but black swam wears pants, not skirt. Not too sure

Ikr it came to me as an ad and now I'm saving this masterpiece
the ending scene with them walking together, having an earring of each other's hair, with the black haired person now looking up to the white haired person is so lovely but also bittersweet to me. life obviously just moves on and around without the spirit (that shot of them surrounded by the skeletons of those long dead; one might even say they are used to being left behind) and our lovely white haired mortal is by definition all about change bc that is life itself (the different haircuts, the shot of them clutching their throat.. their voice starting to change?); but its okay because the time still spent with each other is worth it, worth everything.

The black char looks like a god of some kind whereas the white one is human. Seems the story of falling in love with a god. Also in the last scene her height is greater than the black one, looking like she has aged.

This comment is probably going to get buried, but I wanted to post some information about the background of this MV and my personal interpretation of some of it here. Most of this was originally part of a large comment thread, but the original comment was deleted, so I'm compiling and reposting it here for anyone curious for further discussion who happens to stumble across it:
From my understanding, a lot of this is based on Nordic mythology and tradition.
I always thought it was either two women or black is a man. But I really like your theory and explanations.

When an MV has better animation than most seasonal anime, you know you've struck gold
it's actually not surprising for an mv to have better quality animation. if an entire season of an anime had this high quality of animation for the entire show their budget would have to be insane. but for a 5 minute music video you can maintain this level of detail and quality.
@@sillyd0g also the animators on an mv has quite a lot time to finish it while seasonal anime animators have to create 20 minutes of drawings in one week every week for like 2 months on a shoestring budget and no sleep

Black's hair also grows back by the end, so a lot of time passed since they changed braids, too.
@@lithmariel Oh that's right!! It's a really long time. I hope Black and White can stay together forever 😭
i think that white is also a divinity, who’s in love with black. one day Black got a malediction ( in the lyrics it says smt like « until the spell gets off » ) wich consist for him to turn into a bird, but he returns into his human form one day per year (or idk).
Or maybe i m just wrong and white is a human x)
Furthermore i think the malediction on black is related to this egg we see in the MV and i can’t really explain myself what is it for.
なぜこの曲伸びないのか不思議でしょうがない🥲
