Dang, we're near the end of 2023 and Bob Wills is still the King. There was a recording engineer who told Bob that he should get rid of all the talking and the background yodeling (from Bob) out of the record. The feller was fired in a minute! Go Bob. Karl
There's a clip from TV in the late 70's "Merle Haggard and the Texas Playboys tribute Bob Wills. It's some of their stuff with a little more modern engineering. You might enjoy that.
A few years ago, I was walking in my neighborhood in Chico, CA and got to talking to an elderly women. She told me a story about how her father got a chance to fiddle with Bob Wills at a local dance. Later, looking through old newspapers, I came across an advertisement that Bob and His Texas Playboys (America's Most Versatile Dance Band) would be in town and playing at the local Veterans Memorial Building. The year was 1945. Moral of this story, stop and visit with the old folks they may just have a few good memories to share.
I live not far from the Bob Wills Museum in his hometown, Turkey, Texas. At any time of the day you can go into the coffee shop, sit down, and the guys will be talking about him. He's a legend.
i just watched a short docu-series about "slowly dying towns" in Texas, and Turkey was the last one on the series! It showed that coffee shop and Bob Wills touring bus, immortalized there! I had to look up his music and was not disappointed. I hope your town (Turkey) doesn't completely die off; seems like a place worth keeping alive! Best Wishes from Southern Utah!
My parents lived in Kansas in the late thirties and early forties. The word was that Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman or the Dorsey brother wouldn't book a gig within 200 miles of where Bob Wills was playing. He'd hurt their ability to draw a big crowd.
This is absolutely amazing! Such great childhood memories listening to this band. When I was 21 years I actually had the opportunity to sit and have a beer with Leon Rausch at the the Chip in bar in Rendon TX. I requested and he had the band do Milk Cow Blues for me even though they had planned it for the finale'. He autographed a dollar bill for me but unfortunately it's been lost to time. One of the best memories of my life.
My Grandfather was great friends with Bob Wills. Not in the band but after a gig they would party at his house and play until Morning. Drove my Grandmother nuts. I have his fiddle he fiddled with during all that and am now trying to find a good repair shop to do some work on it. Y'all wish me luck!!
I really like this video because it reminds me of sitting at my grandparents' house, drinkin' coffee and reminiscing this and that and havin' such a good time, ooda-lolly, ooda-lolly, golly, what a day.
Night two of the Ken Burns documentary features a lot of this footage. A good little intro with Merle Haggard saying, "Anybody that doesn't like Wills is immediately suspect with me."
I laughed out loud when Merle said this cause I got co workers in Florida that can't stand old country (yet they love that loser new country ) music and they are truly suspect as far I am concerned.
I found out one of my coworkers was Tommy Duncan’s first cousin. He was amazed that me and buddy knew who he was. Funny thing is he looked so much like him it was scary. Great guy miss him a lot
I grew up listening to my mother’s old 78s. While I loved Ernest Tubb, Bob wills was in a class by himself. His music was timeless… would not have been out of place at rock and roll dances in the fifties and sixties.
Just had a right blast learning this tune,, Best lyric I’ve learnt for a little while lol, Grab your gal and pat her on the head, If she don’t like biscuits feed her cornbread,
I realize now that I was a lucky lad growing up in the 70s. My dad had a reel to reel tape player and he had all this music which was rare because up here in Alberta in the 70s very few of our local radio stations played much of this music which I thought strange as it is really is some of the very best. Lots of people would come over to our house to hear dad's music and the local Black Knight tavern even had dad bring in his tape player and get 'em dancing pretty quick on weekends. Oh and him and his buddies would get together and play this music and they were good, I especially liked old May Shaw and her fiddle and she'd be just as drunk as everyone else yet she'd be the one to follow, she'd do a quick tune by ear and start playing and soon everyone who could, was playing along with her.
Every New Year's Eve Frank Herman of San Jose would put on a spread every New Year's people come from around the neighborhood sit around and listen to Bob Wills the good times Warrington Avenue 3069
"grab yo' gal an' pat her on the head If she don't like biscuits, feed 'er cornbread girls down on Big Creek, 'bout half-grown jump on a man like a dog on a bone" Makes me smile ever time I hear it, this is an all time great. Bob Wills and Tomy Duncan Joe Holley (aka "Jody") is the left hand fiddler btw
I noticed that and wondered why ? why I noticed that is ! seems perfectly natural and its the guys without their 6 guns that actually look odd when ya think about it ! but I go back a long ways , long long ways I guess
arlichar... bob was a breakdown fiddler, one of the best! He put the band together, wrote, played, hollered, arranged (though Eldon Shamblin was the great guitarist and the main arranger)...it was his baby. In those days you had band leaders who also played, but were the face of the band.
Until I was 13, I didn't know there were other musicians...Bob was all our 8 track player in the car would play..thanks to my dad I learned that this is REAL music!!
Everybody knows who Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson & Kris Kristofferson are. Before they became famous, they grew up listening to Bob Wills, The Original King of Country Music.
Me and my wife went to Sedan, Kansas in 1948 to see Bob Wills, we danced our hearts out. We went every year. Sure miss his style of music :-)
I hope you and your wife are doing well! I'm 28 and finding this music. It really is the core of what modern music turned into.
Always loved these guys.
Wow, that’s amazing!
Western Swing
Check out Asleep At The Wheel
Don't matter who's in Austin bob wills is still the king
Once you cross that old red river hoss
To hear the Texas Playboys and Tommy Duncan sing…

40 years old, and I finally discovered Bob Wills. I heard it from Waylon's song, "Bob Wills is still the King." Great music.
Same boat but 39. Never too late. Bob Wills IS still the king🤠🍺

You’re right.
I’m from los molinos and love this piece of history.😮 I’m really trying to keep our heritage around
Before metal, before punk, and rockabilly, texas swing would drink you under the table
Some would argue it still does
True story! Texas Swing and bakersfield swing. Hot Dawg! Best times ever!! Have to keep ordering because you got do thirsty. Literally needed liquid
What kind of strange music is this that I would dance to it with my wife and my kids could listen to it too?
I'll drink to that!
Sorry, but You should listen to Andy Griffith do this song . . No comparison . . .

My family used to go to Bob Wills day in Turkey every year growing up
What a beautiful contribution to American music... blues, country, jazz, big band all rolled into one. It's such a joy to listen to Bob Wills.
I discovered Bob Wills in my 20’s in the 90’s. Went from punk, to metal, to jazz to Bob Wills. Sure wish that Texas Swing would make a comeback.
Try asleep at the wheel
It don’t matter who’s in Austin, Bob Wills is still the King.
This is by far one of the best recordings of Bob Wills and the Texas playboys. Edit: Another fun fact, those revolvers are probably real LMAO.
... and loaded :)
My parents lived in Kansas in the late thirties and early forties. The word was that Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman or the Dorsey brother wouldn't book a gig within 200 miles of where Bob Wills was playing. He'd hurt their ability to draw a big crowd.
Bob was friends with my grandparents, they worked for him at Wills Point. We have a hat and saddle that was made especially for Bob.
@Samuel Currey 11 Wills Point was a western bar and dance hall Bob Wills owned in Sacramento Ca
I don't see a single wire on this stage. They were the best steel guitars, violins and artists in the business. Classics. Most Excellent! Karl
You know you've made it when you have your own live Western Swing band serenading you while you shave.
That was Charles Starett aka"
Durangon kid.

Selrisitai thanks for quoting my favourite child hood movie, even if you did so 5 years ago. Golly what a day

Watched that last night! It' what brought me to this youtube. What and exceptional TV show!
I laughed out loud when Merle said this cause I got co workers in Florida that can't stand old country (yet they love that loser new country ) music and they are truly suspect as far I am concerned.
Sorry I'm in the group with Waylon in that we only really liked two of his songs and Waylon grew up on Texas lol
Both are legends

So, he's your 4th cousin, thrice removed.
Greetings Hannah. Bob Wills and I were good friends.
We lived in the same town and went to the same school
coz there was only one Dar.
What a coincidence, I'm his uncle's grandpa's nephew's daughter's cousin's sister's mom's son!
Cool
This was just what I need to put this evening to bed. Bob Wills was one of the greats.
Tommy Duncan was arguably one of the greatest country singers of all time! Including the Georges.
I found out one of my coworkers was Tommy Duncan’s first cousin. He was amazed that me and buddy knew who he was. Funny thing is he looked so much like him it was scary. Great guy miss him a lot
The best...love Bob Wills music.
Never heard of Bob Wills. Went through a town called Turkey Texas and apparently it is his hometown and there is Bob Wills stuff everywhere!
Waylon did a great song about Bob Wills.
I grew up listening to my mother’s old 78s. While I loved Ernest Tubb, Bob wills was in a class by himself. His music was timeless… would not have been out of place at rock and roll dances in the fifties and sixties.

Hello 👋 how are you doing today can we be friends if you don’t mind
This was played by Steve Earle on Heartworn Highway film at Guy Clarke’s house. Had no idea it was such an old standard
Ya just gotta wear your guns when you are jamming.
Every New Year's Eve Frank Herman of San Jose would put on a spread every New Year's people come from around the neighborhood sit around and listen to Bob Wills the good times Warrington Avenue 3069
I envy this generation of America. Where did we go wrong?
as you all know, if anyone knows what's cool, it's me, and that is cool.
Those solos were great! Nice tune.

I think a night with these gents would prove to be quite eventful. Great music. Only in 'Merica.
This song is amazing.
What in the world is Bob packin’ heat for? The Playboys are killin it as usual.
I noticed that and wondered why ? why I noticed that is ! seems perfectly natural and its the guys without their 6 guns that actually look odd when ya think about it ! but I go back a long ways , long long ways I guess
Why wouldn’t he?
If John Lennon hadn't been an anti-gun nut maybe he would have had a chance.
It's a movie.
arlichar...
bob was a breakdown fiddler, one of the best! He put the band together, wrote, played, hollered, arranged (though Eldon Shamblin was the great guitarist and the main arranger)...it was his baby. In those days you had band leaders who also played, but were the face of the band.

You can't live in Texas unless you've got a lot of soul.
Only soul you got you sucked outta Oklahoma!
And carry a gun!
@Paradigm Shift Why, if I may ask? I live in Texas and September is coming up, so I'm thinking about it.

Brilliant
That guitar solo , Django Reinhardt. Love this music
Guitar solo has more in common with Charlie Christian than Django Reinhardt

Waylon didn't care for Bob Will's lol
This is the biggest lie ever on this site
Texas legend
Looks like a young Roy Rogers getting a shave and tying the neck tie.
Bob was a barber in Roy New Mexico before his fame in Texas
The movie that this is from was on tv yesterday.
I love this song and this is a fun video but I can't figure out who is actually singing. lol
I can’t figure out who is Bob Wills, is he the guy shaving?
@@rayray8687no he has the cowboy hat on and the fiddle
Sorry no cowboy hat. He is in the center of front row w/steel guitar to his immediate left
Tommy Duncan. He is standing behind Bob Wills with black hat and no instrument.
Tommy Duncan behind Bob Wills with Black-hat and no instrument
Anybody headed to Greune Hall?
OG RAP... The best ever!!
This is not rap. It is "Talking music". It was invented by bluegrass musicians in the 1800's.
Tommy Duncan is soooooo cool
Frank big bow Herman 3069 Warrington Avenue San Jose California I always played Bob Wells stay all night stay a little longer
It was asked 9 years ago, but I did not find an answer. What movie was this clip from?
A hundred years from now, they'll call this Southwest Conference music :)
This must be a scene from a movie...anyone know which one?
How does he get across to the e string on a regular strung fiddle with the right hand fingers?
GM Y'all 😇😁
That's some swinging shit right there.
the awesome Noel Boggs on steel
At 0:49/2,08 has anyone appreciated the enormous task of getting up to those high fiddle e string notes with the
Right hand?! 😢😮
does anybody know who the guys on lead guitar and steel guitar are?
I think that's Noel Boggs on the steel guitar.
Good clip. But, why is that guy shaving?
