I remember when I gave my life to Christ BJ Thomas was one of the first Christian singers who inspired me to sing few of his songs. RIP my brother, till we meet in heaven.
This is a man who showed us what the grace of God can do in someone’s life.
I need to hear more about this please!! Do you know more?? Is there a book? A video?

When I was a 8 years old my mom had me take piano lessons. They lasted around a year but I never practiced and my mom finally gave up and let me quit. A couple of years later a friend from my church gave me a gift. It was BJ's album "Home Where I Belong." I fell in love with the album and hopped on my bike and rode to a nearby Christian book store and bought the album's song book. I then sat at my piano for hours and hours and hours and used what little piano knowledge I had to play along with the record as it spun on the player.
There was a problem, however. The record player didn't spin at the correct speed, and some of the songs in the songbook were written in different keys than what were recorded. Because of this I had to improvise and use the songbook and what I heard on the record as a guide. Over weeks and months (and eventually years) I basically taught myself to play piano, and how to play by ear to make the piano sound like what was on the record. As BJ released new albums I raced to the same bookstore to get the new songbooks.....Happy Man, You Gave Me Love, For the Best, Amazing Grace, etc. I KNOW that over the years I spent hundreds, and likely thousands, of hours playing those songs.
Long story short.....I eventually became pretty accomplished and ended up touring as a professional piano player for several years. I met my wife while on one of those tours and we now have 2 beautiful grown daughters, both who are tremendously music minded. I've played in church music teams for over 40 years and our youngest daughter is in the final year of college earning a degree in piano performance and has developed quite a studio of piano students.
When I heard this terrible news last week I was devastated. It's difficult to see how my life today, and the family I have, exists if my friend hadn't given me that album. Sure, maybe I would've eventually found another path to music and met my wife some other way, but in reality that first moment of listening to Home Where I Belong was one of the biggest touchpoints of my life and I can track an exact path from that moment to who and where I am today.
BJ's music was, and is, the soundtrack to our family. In fact, Two Car Garage is our family theme song.
BJ will be sorely missed and the world is a worse off place without his presence. Thankfully we still have his recorded music, of which I haven't stopped playing since this terrible news.
Regarding Amazing Grace.....in the mid-80's I saw BJ at the Palomino Club in North Hollywood. He sang all his hits and then did this version of Amazing Grace as his encore. During the last verse, when BJ hit those classic high notes, the crowd rose to their feet and gave him a standing ovation while he sang the final words. They didn't even wait til he was finished singing. It was spine tingling.
I'll never forget that moment. I'll never forget BJ. Thank you for sharing your music my friend. Thank you for your kindness. You impacted more people than you'll ever know.

I always wanted a microphone to pretend I was singing with you. On our dirt road I would pick up a stick and pretend that was my mic. I would walk up and down the street singing all the time..your songs!!!!!!! I sing in church and I still love when its raining as I did as a child run outside and hold a stick and sign your "Raindrops Keep Falling ". I look for ward to seeing and being with Jesus and all my family and relatives in Heaven and then I will be looking up you and Gloria to meet you!!! I am so proud of your life and how you gave it to God and so happy you have a great woman by your side. Lifting you up in my prayers. I remember listening to his album "Home Where I Belong". It comforted me in the late seventies, as I had lost my dear sweet father in 1975. Rest in peace, Mr. Thomas.

I met him back in the 70's when he put on a New Year's Eve concert for a Campus Crusade for Christ convention in Chicago. Afterward he did autographs. There were 4,000 of us. Yes, 4,000. Probably everyone didn't stand in line but there were A LOT of us. lol
