One of the best episodes of Buffy ever. Lots of people have that “Buffy will patrol tonight” drawing tattooed. Always loved this quote from Joss on where he got the idea for The Gentlemen: "They (the Gentlemen) came from many storybooks and many silent movies and many horror movies and many nightmares and Mr. Burns (from The Simpsons). There's a little bit of Mr. Burns." Cracks me up because I can see that bit of Mr. Burns in their look and way of gesturing.

The best episode of S4 by far. Brilliant innovative writing, The Gentlemen were among the scariest of BTVS monsters. The cast recalled it was actually exhausting to film with the effort that had to be put in talk but stay silent. The nightmare of being cut into and not being able to scream shown when the student is being held down while The Gentlemen extract his heart. Really frightening. The comedy between Xander and Spike brings a little light relief, and also our introduction to Tara. A great stand alone episode.

back in season one, _buffy_ creator joss whedon had wanted to cast a black actor to play cordelia, but the network straight-up told him that if he did, she would not be allowed to have romantic relationships with white characters. this was 1997 mind you.
what changed between then and the introduction of giles's relationship with olivia in this episode? _buffy_ became by far the most popular show on the network, and buffy herself became the network's mascot. yes, the show's creative team gained the power to get away with those vulgar gestures you remarked on, but they also put that power to more important uses.

One of my favorite episodes! Just wanted to give a shout out to the writing (by Joss Whedon). One of the themes of the episode is the difference between "talking" and actually "communicating" and whether we do our best communicating after we STOP talking. And this theme pops up continually in the dialogue. The very first lines of the episode are Professor Walsh (in Buffy's dream): "So this is what it is.. Talking about communication...talking about language... not the same thing...it's about the thoughts and experiences that we don't have a word for..."
Some line of dialogue found in the episode:
-Spike (imitating Anya) to Xander: "We never talk."
-Xander to Anya: "we'll talk about it later." and then Anya to Xander: "Well, I think we should talk about it now."
-Olivia to Giles: "Yeah, that's enough small talk, don't you think?"
-Wicca at the Wicca meeting: "Okay, let's talk about the theme for the bacchanal."
-Willow talking to Buffy about the Wicca meeting: "Talk. All Talk."
-Buffy to Willow when she asks about Riley: "See above re: talk. all talk."
-Buffy to Willow about Riley: "I get nervous and I start babbling...plus every time we talk I have to lie."
-Riley to Forrest: "See? You're naturally inclined to talk too much."
-Riley to Buffy at the end: "Well, I guess we have to talk."

My knowledge and expectations for this episode way back when were spoiled by the fact that I watched a good portion of the series out of order initially; only becoming a regular viewer towards the end of season 4. Just the way it work out, I read _about_ Hush _long_ before I finally got to see it; so I was really looking forward to this amazing, ground breaking show done completely in silence.... and was puzzled and a little let down by all the talking that takes place. Don't get me wrong, still a remarkable and ambitious episode; and it's not the show's fault for not being what I _thought_ it was going to be...
Interestingly, the cast has talked about how, when they heard the story concept for the episode, they were excited not to have so many lines to learn that week; and thought it was going to be a really simple episode. The reality was the opposite since, without dialogue, the blocking and interaction had to be precisely choreographed.

This episode and Earshot taught me communication is the biggest issue they ALL have. That usually drives me nuts but they are all for fairly understandable reasons. Except Giles, this made his communication skills CRUMBLE and I loved every second. Huh, she does remind me of season 1 Willow too, only without a Xander to get her talking. Some episodes make characters stick with you. And now I miss Buffy's shrink, the one bright spot in that strange, strange tale of season 3.

5:05 I love that Xander's first response to a crisis is to call Buffy, before he realises how pointless it is when he can't speak. Of course, these days you would send a text message.
Hush was written in response to a review that said that BtVS relied on witty dialogue, so they wrote an episode with almost no dialogue.
11:30 Tara is very shy, but finds a kindred spirit in Willow. She's also a real witch, interested in doing spells, unlike the rest of the 'wicca' group,
They need to talk, and they can now, they just don't know what to say to each other.
