When it lands on someone it injects a deadly poison which can take out 30 health, I think. And for a tip to new players: always get 16 iron and buy wool two times so you can run away from hostile situations. And who knows maybe get some emeralds on the way ^_^ and depending on your kit, try to watch run away from people who want to instigate.
