I'm a Navy veteran and am so embarrassed to see this happen. I joined at age 17 in the late 70's
I had to prove myself tough enough as a woman to be allowed on a ship as one of the few females paving the way for women aboard naval vessels today. This is a kick in the teeth! How ridiculous! Whatever you do when your off duty is you business but when your on duty your a sailor and a team player. I had to have the mindset and attitude back then that I could do anything you can do but better to be accepted. I didn't play the woman card and there shouldn't be anyone serving in the military playing any cards especially drag cards! You're accepted by your merit!

As ex-military myself, what I don’t get is if they are doing this to attract ‘different’ people by having someone like them in recruiting (based on the assumption that you associate best with like minded people), then this must put off those who are not that way. In other words, appeal to a few, repulse the majority. No wonder recruiting is down.

You know, it is actually alright to criticize service members for their habits off-duty, right? Your service isn't suddenly a trump card for everything. Yes, this is a free country, and we're all allowed to have our hobbies, but that doesn't mean that your hobby isn't objectively weird or bringing a bad look on your branch of service. The whole point of the military, at least when I started service, was to make your individualism secondary to your service to country. You were a soldier first, whatever second. There were also tight controls over how you acted off-duty, to include how you dressed, your hygiene, your spending habits, and even your sexual habits. Not that we didn't go out and do some freaky thing (hi, Fayetteville), but you didn't broadcast it on social media because that could land you in the 1SG or COs office to discuss lewd conduct or conduct unbecoming. Now, we're here.

The military has come a long way, since not letting people be open about themselves, but this has gone too far. That person has more of a chance of being hurt on his off duty time, because of the attire he chooses to wear out. I could be wrong.
