We have a 9 week old Golden Retriever that is pulling badly. I have arthritis in my hands, it already hurts me & I'm worried about how quickly she's going to get big. How old can we reasonably expect her to learn to stop pulling?
Thank you so much! My 4 month old maintains "heel" position well for reasonable periods given his age, even with distractions but otherwise pulls to chase every bee and blowing leaf. Practicing this "with me" exercise for a week helped so much to build understanding that pulling is never okay.
The problem is the outdoor, my dog listens to everything we say indoor but once outdoor, she is more interested in sniffing everywhere than coming to us, even with tasty treat.
Walking my 9 month old pit rescue is a challenge. He is so energetic and curious. I try to balance allowing him to smell and explore (be a dog) and listen to me. He is slowly getting better. I don't care if he's on my left, right, or out in front sniffing, as long as he does not pull. People and other dogs show up and everything is out the window.
Man! Where do you live? In which country? Because apparently you do things very different there and I would love your opinion on how. I am on some Facebook groups in my country (sadly, Romania) and I just saw somebody gave away a 1.5 yrs old pittie to some strangers for adoption and the imbeciles decided on the way home to actually abandon it to the dog pound where he was actually on parole to be killed. I mean what kinda fucked up people would do that and how do you over there do things different!? I wanted to take him in, but my 1yrs staffie girl not much friendly and also I live in a one bedroom apt, so you get the idea of space. I am asking you because I have no words left to tell these imbeciles that a dog is for life, so is a family member.

I totally understand the need to build a solid foundation for the puppy to learn with no distractions, inside, but can we please have a video for when and how to transition to outside for walks? My puppy is really good at this inside and in front and back gardens, but as soon as we leave the garden, he just wants to pull all the way to the field where we play fetch. He’s obsessed haha. As soon as he knows we’re going towards the field he practically drags me there. I’ve tried the turning him around method, so he knows pulling doesn’t get him anywhere, but if I stop him he just digs his heels in and doesn’t move, unless it’s towards the field. I always try to exercise him beforehand, but it’s tricky to do that before we get to the field. Any tips anyone?

They are rescues ,fearful and are comforted by being able to transfer the responsibility to me. We walk a lot, leash pulling and unwanted behavior can be altered when you just stand still, for as long as it takes for them to figure out why we are not going anywhere and their mindset is changed. Okay here goes.. my Labrador "Tucker" Is now 16 months old and I still can't walk him on a leash. He's a BIG BOY. About 105 lbs. And he can pull incredibley super hard!! I don't have the strength to hold him. My son's even have a hard time. And they are both 6 ft. I could really use some good advice with what ever you're thoughts are Thanks .
How applicable are these techniques with older dogs? I neglected leash manners when training my lab puppy and now I regret it. Would you do something differently? He's 18 months right now.

Can you tell me how to view replays of your Thursday evening livestream videos? I could only listen to the podcast of the one you did last week when you were demonstrating how to train Euchre. Thank you, Helen
I enjoy your training videos and, largely, agree with your methods. HOWEVER, I am very concerned with the complete dependence on food treats as the primary motivator. I have a young dog (Cockapoo, 10 months), who is a very fussy eater. She has been checked for medical conditions. While she responds well to training treats, she then balks at eating her regular meals - sometimes even refusing to eat her regular food at all. Especially, when you emphasize "high value" treats for training, these are much more tasty than her regular kibble - even sometimes topped with cooked ground beef. It seems the treats are replacing her regular meal in her mind. I am forced to stop using training treats in an effort to keep her eating regularly. What to do?
Maybe you can make sure to weigh her food for the day and take out her training portion from that? I mix my puppies' kibble with grilled chicken and cheese...so they're getting random treats during training. I hope that helps 🥰
Any suggestion for walking a puppy with an older dog. My pup is 5 month old lab and he jumps on other lab or yanks on her leash. Sounds simple but it's actually really hard to handle lol. Other than walking alone is there a good way to deal?
We have a 4 month old lab puppy, and leash training is one of our major struggles. We are doing well with “Let’s go” in the house, but of course, outside all bets are off. My question is: how do we get her adequate exercise without undoing all the leash training we’ve done in the house? This video looks like it will help, but until she really gets it, we have the same problem.
I understand - my lab will walk nicely for a few paces in the hallway with treats along the way, but outside not a chance. The trouble is I have to take him outside to relieve himself and for exercise, and he pulls until we get to the grass and he gets a big reward once we get there - and no way are you going to enforce manners while they want a wee. Outside can then become a pulling battle and we go backwards. I guess the video shows you how to get started and you've got to build on it and slowly add distractions indoors and build the skill up while at the same time when you are outside being gentle and not having a leash battle. That part of the balance the video doesn't address.
I'm wondering how much cheese you feed the dog ;-) If you do that every day, the dog is getting fat. Or do you give the cheese instead of a meal? regards from vienna
My dog pulls so I watched your video for a gentle lead harness. This video says don't use a harness. My dog will be 1 and am still struggling for her to stop pulling. Which is the best route to leash train her?
It's been so frustrating trying to train my dog to walk on a loose leash. He puts his entire bodyweight into the leash. Nothing I've been doing seems to work. I am almost just giving up and saying well he doesn't like walking on the leash. But I'm going to try some of these things. It's just a lot harder for a non-expert to do this training than it is for you guys.
During training, is it okay to feed my dog cheese daily? How much should be the quantity. In the video, it seems you fed her cheese greatly. Please tell me
Due to the virus shutting down all dog training classes, I have been trying to leash train my 5 month old Bullmastiff rescue. Even with treats in my hand, he will attack the leash and twist and pull on the leash. I usually end up undoing the leash and go back in the house. It is not a game for me and I very much want to train him.
Hi, my new rescue dog has not been leash trained- she is 8 months. I am working on look at me and heel and she’s doing really well, but as soon as I got out the gate to attempt a walk, she is unable to focus on me. I have tried a few distractions and she’s pretty good with these, but again as we go out the gate she is overwhelmed by all the smells and sights. What do I need to do to get her ready to go on walks?
jude mathers hi! I would try walking up to the gate, and work on keeping focus. After that, open the gate, and practice walking through. Keep working on that until you have her focus the whole time when walking through. After that, you can start adding more distance 🙃
I need your help, I'm disabled and have bad balance and coordination, I recently got a 1 yr old Lab to have as a companion. He's been good so far, I'm wanting to train him on the leash for when i have to take him to the vet, I don't have any toys yet, and recently saw your video about teaching a dog to fetch and bring back, I'm thinking if I get a toy and a long lead I could sit and throw it then guide my lab to return it. Any advice?
What treat brand should I use for a 60lb hound_beagle. He pulls and drags when he wants to poo and pee. I want to train him for leash respect. Thanks Mike from Virginia.

How many treats is normal to give to a puppy while training? While watching this video he probably gave a treat about 100 times! Is this normal? My puppy does great with treats but not usually her own food, even around feeding time.
When it came to training my puppy, I made it RAIN treats. It really encouraged her to nail down those commands in the early days of training! As many treats as it takes!
How many treats do you end up using during a training session like this? I worry that I could give my puppy too much and end up forming bad habits like turning away her regular food. I can't train with regular kibble because she is a picky poodle and we've switched over to a combination to wet/dry food (it'd get quite messy). I'd really like to try this and other trainings on this channel with my pup but I often find myself cutting training sessions a little short because I feel like I'm giving her too much. She doesn't respond quite as well to rewards by play/toy... any help/advice would be appreciated! Thank you
I use really tiny holistic sardine kibble - also i do not feed my Aussie before training he gets almost his entire meals from me which is about 3 cups a day. Sometimes i throw the kibble in the grass and he spends hours over the day searching for the food.

He gets bored very easily I’m noticing. Not really sure what to do with him. I’m on disability and with him from 7am to evening. Every day. I took him once to a lake nearby I ended up staying 5 min and getting back in car. He was pulling me in about 8 diff directions at once. Like adhd on steroids. I have adhd so I understand him.
@@richwilson5969 oh my, if he has JRT in him, he is bred to WORK HARD all day! Any chance you can get a treadmill? Try feeding with a snuffle mat, puzzle box etc cuz they love to sniff and dig. Fetch and tug are also good ways to tire them out. With your disability, you may have to hire somebody to work on the leash walking, but try a gentle leader/halti first. All the best. God bless ❤️🙏❤️
Maybe you don’t have high value treats. Sometimes all you need is a treat switch and your puppy follows you everywhere. I recommend using treats that only have one or a few ingredients and that are really smelly. Dogs LOVE these. Especially mine. Sometimes dogs aren’t food motivated though. Maybe they really like tug of war with a rope toy or they like “killing” a plush toy. It depends on the dog but whatever they love, use that as currency. This comment may not even be relevant to you anymore because it was 8 months ago but I’m typing anyway because if I can help you, I want to. Hope this helps!
what is the flooring in this session? I looked at a g floor for my indoor puppy play area and it was very smelly and the state of California had warned against it...looking for other options
Mine is one year. Can I still do this or do I need a professional. She learned how to sit for a treat early on and still does. She won't however sit when i tell her to without the treat.
My Rottsky just keeps pulling no matter what with just basic things dirt grass mud I can’t get him to focus sometimes he’ll do fine then he will just go back to constantly pulling

My question is... Won't the dog only come/do things for food? And if you don't have any, they'll stop listening? I find that with my own lab..it drives me nuts and I'm worried I'm only feeding his food obsession? 🤷😔
Use in moderation. Cheese is a high value treat where as kibble is a low level. Always use kibble where you can as it’s healthier but if they aren’t interested or it’s a more demanding training session up the treat value (so how tasty and smelly it is I.e. bacon fish cheese)
First time I've been disappointed in the content. A prong collar is a much better tool. Combine it with treats and ur done training in 10 minutes. It also has the ability to be used outside when other dogs or other stimulus are around.

I could really use some good advice with what ever you're thoughts are
Thanks .
How applicable are these techniques with older dogs? I neglected leash manners when training my lab puppy and now I regret it. Would you do something differently? He's 18 months right now.

Glad you are enjoying it so much! Thanks for watching ~Ken
At what time does this become normal behavior and the issuing of treats cease? Or, are treats to be issued through out the dogs life?

You could train my Lyla until you’re blue - put a bird in front of her you just became a trailer without wheels lol
New subscriber here and a 1st time puppy owner. We've got a 4mos old Lab puppy and with your channel, I'm teaching him the basics. He's got the gist of them so far however, I would like to "proof" it as you say. Are these the same steps to do it?
Can you tell me how to view replays of your Thursday evening livestream videos? I could only listen to the podcast of the one you did last week when you were demonstrating how to train Euchre.
Thank you,
Helen
Great tips!
Thank you, Deborah! Glad you found the video helpful. Happy Training ~Ken
You can feed him kibble as training treats instead of as his meal. In other words he works for his breakfast or whatever.
Did you only reward for off when she sat or just so paws on the ground?
My dog pulls so I watched your video for a gentle lead harness. This video says don't use a harness. My dog will be 1 and am still struggling for her to stop pulling. Which is the best route to leash train her?
Got a lab mix, he's about 7 years old. Taught him to shake, but still have issues with leash tugging. Is it too late to train him?
It's been so frustrating trying to train my dog to walk on a loose leash. He puts his entire bodyweight into the leash. Nothing I've been doing seems to work. I am almost just giving up and saying well he doesn't like walking on the leash. But I'm going to try some of these things. It's just a lot harder for a non-expert to do this training than it is for you guys.
My black lab is 3 years old and he pulls so much while walking that we can't really walk him will something like this work for him?
I have a yellow lab named Maggie, who is almost 6 months old. How old was this Maggie when she was filmed.?
is there any video instruction on how to hand-feed your dog? i got bitten all the time :((
Hey Adrian, great question! I think you will find this video helpful!!!

@@McCannDogs THANK YOU !! my puppy is now really gentle when I feed him treats :)
Ours doesn't pull BADLY, she just wants to go at a pace I can't match.
You might want to try just totally ignoring him/her while he/she has the leash in their mouth. Like turning away and looking at the sky ignoring.
Best training treats recommended?
Cooked chicken
2 year old choc lab still pulls on walks. Very curious and marks territory a lot
Any advice?
Great video! New subscriber!
Glad you enjoyed it, Judy! Welcome to McCann Dogs! ~Ken
What treat brand should I use for a 60lb hound_beagle. He pulls and drags when he wants to poo and pee. I want to train him for leash respect.
Thanks
Mike from Virginia.
How old is she my lab just turned 3 months I learned her sit and down in 50 mins she’s a quick learner just having problems of walking her she’s always wants to run back home or hide in bushes but I was told this is normal for labs fear stage cause i never had this problem with my 3 month old pit bull
Lets see if it works oh my jrt 😆
At twelve years I´ve given up on my dear Samantha - she´s just a puller.
Dogs so food driven.
Mines 10x more hyper. Your more than welcome to come train him.
what breed?
@@judymiller5154 mix of lab and I think Jack Russell terroir. I believe. I know one thing I’m learning once he gets out his energy. No more pulling me down the road with him. He’s got so much energy.
How come no harness?
Great video. But my puppy lisen to me just when i have treats. Why is that
Maybe you don’t have high value treats.
How old is the puppy?
Hi there, ropstad! This puppy is about 20 weeks old. Thanks for watching ~Ken
How can i get my baby Rottweiler to stop biting?

Mines not a puppy 3years pls turorial
My question is... Won't the dog only come/do things for food? And if you don't have any, they'll stop listening? I find that with my own lab..it drives me nuts and I'm worried I'm only feeding his food obsession? 🤷😔
Cheese? What type? Is it good for any dog?
Cheese is like a drug to a dog! Lol Any kind ;)
My vet said to use their kibble so they don't become overweight. I think I will try cheese because my lab is tough
Use in moderation. Cheese is a high value treat where as kibble is a low level. Always use kibble where you can as it’s healthier but if they aren’t interested or it’s a more demanding training session up the treat value (so how tasty and smelly it is I.e. bacon fish cheese)
I have a big black lab and idk how to control her she needs to stop pulling and be leash trained
how old? weight? mine is 50# at 7 mo
IDK
He needs to run 🏃♂️ he’s going to get huge and out of shape yikes 😳 that’s a lot of treats
Ide like to see a uncontrollable dog. And watch how you do this.
😁😀😎💙❤😁
I'm a wheelchair-bound person, my Lucky is only 6 months old Labrador. I like her abilities to pulling me, especially up the hill...
Can you give any kind of cheese
This training is not realistic at all
First time I've been disappointed in the content. A prong collar is a much better tool. Combine it with treats and ur done training in 10 minutes. It also has the ability to be used outside when other dogs or other stimulus are around.
Makes no sense your using two methods food and then leash corrections. I’m not a food fan.
