- In the history of "Old Money" families in America, sadly there is perhaps no word more closely tied to public “tragedy” - accompanied by world-changing wealth and political influence - than the name "Kennedy."
And yet, what if we were to tell you that there is one particular family-with more money than J.F.K. and his descendants could ever dream of-who seemingly courted tragedy and scandal at a breakneck speed that would make even a Kennedy shudder with pity?

-------
Our story begins in the year 1855 - under the shadowed skies of Allegany County, Maryland.
Here, one George Getty was born - a harbinger of a family destined to wield immense power and wealth - but not without a cost.
Young George’s childhood was stained with hardship.
After a move to Ohio, the child experienced the shattering loss of his father at just six years old.
Yet, financial aid from his Uncle Joseph lifted George from these early tribulations - steering him toward Ohio Northern University - and the industrious lad emerged in 1879 with a Bachelor of Science - and an unquenchable thirst for more.
Lured by the law, George further honed his intellect at the University of Michigan Law School - finally settling in Minneapolis to specialize in insurance and corporate law.
But the year 1882 whispered something darker in his ear-a call he couldn't resist.
Though George didn't formally enter the oil industry until 1904, this year marked a rebellious turn.
Driven by a fascination with natural resources, he made a choice that carried an undertone of menace - he abandoned a thriving law career - pulling his family into the unpredictable whirlpool of the oil trade in Oklahoma.
Over the next few years, J. Paul Getty would soon emerged as the undisputed captain steering the family's financial ship.
The decade of the nineteen thirties was a stormy period - not just for the Gettys but for the world at large.
The Great Depression raged - toppling empires of commerce and casting a pall of uncertainty across industries.
Amid this economic maelstrom, J. Paul Getty and his mother - Sarah - took a significant step in 1934 by creating a trust with both of them as trustors.
Ostensibly aimed at preserving the integrity of their underlying corporate assets, this trust set the stage for a protracted battle for control.
However, over the years, J. Paul would make incremental but impactful moves to consolidate his power.
And these financial gambits were anything but straightforward - they involved taking on substantial debt and complex negotiations that spanned years.
He then gradually acquired shares - thereby accumulating the voting power essential to influence the trajectory of the family business.
Indeed, it was a slow-burning coup - methodically executed.
His mother, Sarah Getty - who had been the initial custodian of the family's legacy - found her control progressively weakened.
In 1971, the unveiling of the now legendary Getty Museum punctuated the family's towering influence.
With its twin bastions in Los Angeles-the Getty Villa and Getty Center-the institution stands as a sanctuary of visual wonders, from ancient relics to modern snapshots.
Drawing nearly two million pilgrims yearly, its hallowed halls and tranquil landscapes elevate it beyond mere tourist attraction.
However, the museum's very existence casts a dual shadow-as a monument to amassed fortune and as a lighthouse for art appreciation.
In 1976, J. Paul Getty, took his final bow from the world stage - leaving a fortune that staggered the imagination-an estimated 4 billion - or twenty seven billion in 2023 dollars.
In 1960, the world welcomed Mark Getty - another luminary in the famed Getty lineage.
Born in Rome but raised in England, Mark's academic pursuits in Philosophy and Politics at St. Catherine's College, Oxford - set the stage for an illustrious career.
But he wasn’t just another businessman - Mark revolutionized the landscape of visual media.
Getty Images soon dominated the market - a colossus in the field of stock photography - commanding the visual narrative that shaped public perception.
Then, in 1992, Los Angeles welcomed Nats Getty into its complex fold.
A dazzling blend of model, designer, socialite, and advocate for LGBTQ rights, Nats burst onto the scene in a style far removed from the reserved legacy of “old money” families like The Gettys.
Nats’ marriage to Canadian socialite and RUclips sensation Gigi Gorgeous was a spectacle that seemed almost surreal.
COMMENT: Which “old money” family would you like us to cover next?
I'd like you to cover my family, but you'll have to give me a lot of "old money" first😄
Do old money from africa
🤔🇨🇦💸
The Stroh family and the Vanderbilts
Carlos Slim
J.Paul Getty actually helped me quite a bit. I'd just started surfing at age 35 in the hopes that it would get me though a challenging period of my life. The local paper had an interview with him, and at its end the interviewer asked Mr. Getty if he were happy. "No," he replied. "The only time I was ever happy was when I was a young man surfing at Malibu." Those words convinced me that I was on the right track, and I still am.
Really? He was born in 1892 lol
@@StarWavesFlowcould be one of the juniors.
@@StarWavesFlowLol 😆 I've seen a couple of clips about this interview. I can see where a youngster would think it was a recent interview they're talking about. Lol 😆
King Solomon in the Bible who had everything said that being happy in life was the most important and read Matthew 19: 23-26
I am in my 60s I have never surfed, but I think about it all summer. Hopefully il get it chance this summer it’s on my bucket list! 🏄♀️
Thats the kind of money where the children are closer to the staff than the actual relatives. Ive actually seen it myself in a mansion i worked in for a few months in Newport RI. The maids were literally the parent's
Poor little rich kids. It's so sad😢
@@lorihoop3831the kids don’t understand all that though. They’re the ones suffering without having real parents there except they have ‘stand in ‘parents so sad imo😢😢😢
@@lorihoop3831idk about you, but I’d rather be poor as dirt with parents who love me, than rich as god with no love.
@lacyaubut6751 I was poor living with a single mom with love and was sent to grow up with my rich dad and step mom with no love. I tried to run away so many times to get back to my mom.
Parents
Allowing your grandchild’s ear to be severed and still negotiating is insane.
Agreed!
The excuse that he had many more grandchildren was mean as 24/7 security was peanuts to him. Showed how he valued money over family. Simply greed.
Lure irresistible (for some).
I grew up with so many of this type of person, they don’t mind spending their parents money but then give their kids little
😬
Sometimes, kind of an anomaly.
Fascinating I never knew this about this family, grew up in LA and often visited the Getty Museum but honestly was stuck in a survival mode for so long, didn’t quite have the time to research these guys. Very interesting 🤔
Glad you found this interesting!
What a cesspool of sickening worship of money, greed, hatred, debauchery sexual depravity. How much richer am I, a pair of devoted parents who would have given all of the next to nothing that they owned to spend time and expend love, wisdom and truth with us.
They had no mansions, no oilfields, no bodyguards. But their home is filled with children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who love and honor them. Their wealth is shown in the glory of the love bestowed upon them. How truly wealthy they are
You're lucky. You indeed have riches beyond compare.
Agreed, and it's repulsive to me. With that much money comes many problems. At least if you're poor people like you for who you are and not what you can do for them.
It’s the wealth of your heart that matters not the wealth of your pocket?! 😊
Amen!
Good summary of the Getty history. Suggested future topics... the Mellon family, the Du Ponts, and the Hearst family. Maybe the Ford family.
If facial appearance counts for anything, JPG was Satan incarnate :o
"Ineffable" -- great word. You're really good at this!
Great video. I would like to see a 2nd chapter on the Gettys, with more emphasis on the business aspects of Getty Images and what it means for the family’s continuity as “old money” in the US.
As for other families: Walton, Mars, Ford, Lauder, Koch, Johnson (the drug company), S.C. Johnson, Bass, Hunt.
There are more, but that’ll keep you busy for quite a while.
Soros
Vanderbilt, Pritzker, Hilton.
All 400 families should have their own episodes
They are all intergenerational t r a n s g e n d e r s!
Nice well done video. I really liked the narrator. His voice was absolutely perfect for this type of video. Great narration! This shows how having much money and power can still bring on problems. Issues. Disasters too. Maybe even more so! No one is immune to problems. No one. No matter how much money you have. I met Ridley Scott in 2017 at a private screening of his movie, “All The Money In The World”. He was soft spoken. Nice. He is my fav film Director.
Thanks! Yes that’s a great movie
In the late 90s I learned about J Paul Getty. As I read more about him I became absolutely obsessed with the man and his story and also that of Aristotle Onassis. But the more I read and learned about the tragedies his family faced, it became a negative impact.
Today, after watching this video, I truly will not trade my life for any amount of money if it's going to end up in such mess.
You must cover the story of the Oppenheimers in South Africa. Harry Oppenheimer is the founder of Anglo America & De Beers diamonds. A story full of dram
Drama? DeBeers limiting the amount of diamonds to keep prices high, hires gorillas to injure or kill the very poor in third world countries so they cannot profit … some are children, they have drama? Pfft
I really enjoyed Trust but even now I feel revolted by JP Getty after watching it. Donald Sutherland did a great job portraying a very clever, complicated and self-centred man.
I think he had his faults indeed, but he was without a doubt a hard worker, tough negotiater & he really wanted his son & grandson to be his heir....to take over what he built. I particularly liked his stern dislike of alcohol & drugs. There were some casualties without a doubt in younger generations, but the foundation he laid....wow
A followup video about the current Getty family would be very interesting. More about August & Ivy Love Getty. And how about how Getty Images came to be?
Thank you for the great video above this famous family. ❤
Learning right from wrong. It's important.
The Bronfman family of Canada.
Their family feud over Seagram’s, Universal, and Vivendi.
I'm surprised the actor Balthazar Getty wasn't mentioned. I loved him in Alias and I wanted to know what he's up to now.
Great video. Well narrated.
Thank you kindly!
Truly sad. No one ever really knows what sadness in some billionaires life are.
Don t judge your insides by someone s outsides
These stories are fantastic! I don't know if it's possible but a man named Stephen Girard was a magnate from France that settled in Philadelphia in the 1840s (I think). His story might be interesting, even without film footage.
It'll be pretty boring since this is a visual medium.
They replaced God with money and the consequent destruction and depravity ensued.
So,just like God then 😂
yep
The God and Father of our Lord Jesus .Is opposit to the god of this world the father of lies.
You don t know thst..their eventual belief or not.
J Paul had absent father
Anyone interested to understand how John Paul Getty saw wealth, marriage and family please read his autobiography As I See It. Read it a few decades ago, enjoyed it.
Do one on the Reynolds family lines: drug dealing, banking, tobacco, aluminum, etc.
DuPonts have something to say about the Kennedy’s being a wild family also…
It's rumored Baltazar has recordings of Newsom's extra curricular activities. If does have them, I really wish he would release them
Did newsom have a affair or did he do illegal things like his aunt Pelosi?? And I wonder what’s on those recordings?
If JP Getty said, " the only time I was happy was when I was surfing," then you may well understand, "Money Stinks"....
I would like to see more about the Astors and Windsors. Thank you for your interesting video.

Well done!
I'd love to hear some stories about some of the African old mining money families
I believe: 1. if you earn morale then that money would last with generations 2. It is important to spend time with your children. teach them right value then money, name and fame will remain and 3. Never go after money do whatever best you can do the money will follow.
Nats Getty bought a big house near me. A very well known celebrity had owned it before she bought it.
Who? Do you know anything about Occupy The Getty?
Aileen is Paul’s not Gordon’s daughter. “All the Money in the World” and “Trust” was said to be a stretch from the actual truth as non of the family members were asked for their imput. Not all the Gettys are addicts and many of them lead very interesting and productive lives. Why don’t we ever hear of that? I guess tragedy and scandal sells better.
Seriously
no one is impressed when someone born into immense wealth has moderate success in some business or becomes a minor celebrity. it's really just another form of failure in comparison to the more successful relatives. and it is a boring one, compared to the more spectacular failures.
When you shit bed and fritter away an obscene legacy, the humble pilgrimages enjoyed by a small fraction of the innumerable kin is always going to battle for oxygen
Don't let the door hit you in the buttocks on the way out. Whiny folks need to learn to just move on & be quiet
Exactly, if they’re objective and don’t show families in the worst light, they’ll get a lot less views
I enjoyed this video very much however I don't feel that their history is earth shatteringly devastating. It's called life. Some people struggle with mental illness and some people struggle with drugs. Their family did not stand out as one that had been plagued with misfortune. The grandson was kidnapped but they also got him back. They were very fortunate. I do believe that raising children with that kind of opulent wealth must be difficult. If you give children everything they want they have nothing to strive for IMO.
Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts with us, Linda!
This is an interesting perspective. Not just "rich bad poor good."
I can’t believe gigi gorgeous wife was famously rich…I used to watch her and at the start of their relationship it weirded me out how Nat was immediately comfortable w/ gigi’s fame/gossip/eccentric life, etc. , not in a bad way just very unusual for someone new to “fame”, obviously “RUclips money and fame” were minuscule compared to her family history 😅great video
Excellent work as always, thank you for the video. ☺
Thanks again!
good work
Getty had major issues all stemmed from his father.
a sad, and horrible bunch of lives,,,wow.
Can you please make a video of Babara Hutton.
" The rich little poor girl !"
Most don't know Gavin Newsom is related to the Gettys.
Nats Getty; they don't come in any weirder!
Great video , $$$$ isn't always a blessing, keep going from Canada ❤️
🇨🇦
Howard Hughes next please 😅
Aristotle Onassis, that was a tragic family legacy. The Johnson Family, Johnson & Johnson, another troubled wealthy family. The Hammer family, which has been in the press in more recent years due to the bizarre allegations aimed at bringing down Armie & his career/reputation. I always found the Vanderbilt's interesting. Milton Hershey is a great one! Any of these would provide plenty of scandal, depravity, heart break & shock. There are many success stories you could focus on, but I can't think of any more at this moment that others haven't already suggested. I just wish more of these descendants in mainstream would do more to make a more positive difference and use their name for good as opposed to shock & shame, spoiled & strange headlines. I am going to subscribe because i love channels i can learn from & this is entertaining history that holds captivating appeal! ❤️🙋🏼♀️❤️
Thanks so much for these great ideas and subscribing! :)
Huguette Clark and her family would be interesting.
Have you read the book Empty Mansions about Huguette and her family? Fascinating 😊
"The love of money is the root of all evil" 1 Timothy 6:10 KJV. In the end, money makes a great servant, but a heartless master.
Thanks! Mix it up😊 great work 😊
Someone told me that Howard Hughes and Getty were relatives. Maybe it's just a crossing of their fortunes. The father of Howard Hughes invented the drill that made the oil boom possable. They should have stuck closer together. Hughes and Getty were serious mental giants.
The elites are either related or in the group George Carlin talks about, evil circle.
Wait till they find whats under the getty museum
Interesting story. Mind boggling. Man with all that fortune. I thought these r gas station people. Ha ha. Now I know Getty. They're super rich. God bless their families
Haha!
Gas station people!! 😂😂😂.
The heir of Woolworths, the richest woman who inherited a business empire 😅
The Getty museum. Sinister.
You did it!!! Awesome job!!
The Browns, Harrimans and Bushs (New England family) would be interesting.
It is especially interesting to know that the New York City based Union Banking Corporation helped in the financing of Hitler's rise to power. Back at the time, the chief executive of the Union Banking Corporation was former U.S. senator Prescott Bush--YES, the grandfather and father of G.H. W. and G.W. Bush. Prescott Bush, back in his day had a working business relationship with Brown Brothers Harriman.
Enjoyed listening to this, thank you!
Thank you!
And his great grandson Balthazar becomes a semi-well known Hollywod actor.
Heard they’re trafficking tunnels underneath the Getty
This is what happens when you are never told no as a child
No this is what happens when you have all the money in the world, but no love!
Yeah he told them " no" often. G f s too.
The Guinness Family
Being wealthy does not make one immune to tragedies. This is a time immemorial lesson.
Hi there I'm familiarised with all these families and wealth, I have lived it in my own wealthy family, the Fraser's in Argentina. That would be like writing. Dynasty. So long.......
… young George was a real go-Getty.
So interesting
It is so interesting that Gigi Gorgeous married into the family.
The Dupont Family
VANDERBILTS next please
Hi there, you can find our material on Vanderbilts here:

@@oldmoneyluxurycan’t wait to watch that one next. I just visited the Biltmore in Asheville, for my sisters birthday weekend, and it was eye opening to say the least. The gardens and conservatory are so extravagant and beautiful and the old horse stables are now cute little shops jam packed with the most ridiculously overpriced crap. The Tempranillo (red wine) is off the chain good tho 🍷
The Getty sisters have helped housed homeless people here in LA CA ❤
What do you think happened to at least a portion of those homeless? Especially undocumented. They ended up in the NSA D.U.M.B under the Getty.
the Bosch family (the electronics company)
11:00 looks like a happy chap - the ole man
“Tremors of interpersonal family dynamics” indeed!
When you give people an astronomical amount of money by nothing to do…
I don't know if this has been covered already but the Duke fortune travels all the way up to modern day with the grandchildren of Doris Duke being featured on Oprah over a decade ago as the poorest rich kids in the world. Maybe a great next episode and probably quite long cuz the Duke fortune has an incredible history @oldmoneyluxury #oldmoneyluxury
Getty was a Sag ♐️
Please feature the old money saga of Henry M. Flagler of Florida. Thank you
I knew John Paul Getty jr when he lived in Cheyne Walk and then he moved to St James place he loved cricket and built a new stand at Lords and a beautiful country house with a copy of the oval cricket ground where he had proper cricket games I’m not of the opinion that vast wealth equates to happiness though!
surprised dash snow wasn't mentioned. I knew him well.
Cool
I never heard of them.
How about George soros and possibly his entry into a new “old money” lineage
do the DuPont!!
The Dupont's or the Pugh's
Aileen looks just like her Father. My goodness
Hideous!
One reaps what one sows...
I loved Balthazar Getty❤
Daniel K. Ludwig, Livanos and Nicharos... Would be nice
Better to be wealthy and unhappy than poor and unhappy.
How much easier itd be to quit your addictions, if you could have a team of inspiring people to care for you, boost you up, give you legal things to fight it...
Blah...
Or just go to a nice island you own, with doctors to help, just go live out in the beautiful beach scenary.. why would you need to think of heroin and alchohol etc
Maybe there should be some sort of limit of wealth/income..
Yeah of course there'll always be loopholes.. but shojld be even crazier tax... when it comes to having more money than you could literally spend unless you buy some countries...
Mayne jus can employees get much bigger cut
That's a curse, not a blessing. A rich man has less of a chance of entering heaven. As a camel has, it is getting through the eye of a needle.
At 6:23... does anyone else see the resemblance of him and King Charles? Or maybe it’s just me...
The Kruger crash would be interesting
The Dupont's, The Rothschilds, The Trump's. Great videos, thank you ❤
The Trumps lied about their wealth.
Can someone please tell me if this family run Getty images?.
Yes, it says so in the video at 16 min.
Robert Wood Johnson and family
Cursed......I did read that many moons ago.
What about the Duke family?? Duke University, etc.
Sadly another Uber wealthy family with drugs, over excess and depression! Rarely did they smile, have joy or seem to TRULY enjoy life! I would never want to be so wealthy….. it seems so lonely and dark
The Harrimans
How about Pamela Churchill ?
