Ashrams of India Volume 1 Chapter 15, Odisha. Karar Ashram ~ Ashram and samadhi of Sri Yukteswar Giri
Karar Ashram is the coastal hermitage founded by Sri Yukteswar Giri (guru of Yogananda Paramahansa) in 1903 to teach Kriya Yoga as taught by Babaji and Sri Lahiri Mahasaya. The ashram is now looked after by Swami Yogeswarananda Giri who is the Sadhu Sabhapati (President) of the ashram.
Priyanath Karar was known as the famous Karar Swami of Serampore and the foremost monastic disciple of Shyamacharan Lahiri Mahasaya, the father of Kriya Yoga. Karar Swami first came to Puri in the late 19th century with the intention of meeting the famous Oriya astronomer, Samanta Chandrasekhar. Destiny ruled otherwise as by the time Karar Swami returned to Puri again in 1903 to try to meet him he had already died.
As Karar Swami was aware of the potent spiritual vibrations emanating from Puri, he decided to build an ashram and with the help of a few locals, he built a hut over a sandy plot of land and thus was born the Karar Ashram. He chose the day of the Vernal Equinox, March the 22nd 1903, as the foundation day of the ashram. In 1906, he obtained a permanent lease of the land from the Puri Municipality.
As Karar Swami later entered the monastic order, he was christened Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri.
Every year the ashram celebrates the foundation day and there are monthly special prayers and meditation guided by the Acharya on the last Sunday of each month. There is a weekly satsang (discourse on the Bhagavad Gita) held on Sundays and a daily meditation guided by the Acharya. Currently, the ashram offers the courses in vedic, stellar, traditional and modern astrology on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month and Yogic interpretation of the Bhagavad Gita and Vedanta on Sundays. There is of course, training and practical instruction with respect to God realisation through Kriya Yoga at the ashram.
