Honestly ever since I learned about Dan Shncantspellthat and more recently how Jeanette was treated on the show and the trauma she has from it I view this show very differently. makes me sad because there's a lot of nostalgia behind it but now at this ripe old age of 26 I can't look past it
Yeah, I feel similarly, and it sucks, because I *still* find this show funny!
Like, it's so sad that so much joy can be drawn from so much degeneracy and pain so long as the curtain stays where it is.
Like, I whole heartedly disagree with Alex in that I think this show still works today, it's just the problem is how it was made and who made it.
So much talent wasted because of bad decisions and terrible treatment.
Sad in many ways for many people, Jeanette especially.
So yeah, I know what you mean, and I agree.
I hear what you're saying and I agree. Did have a slight chuckle when you said ripe old age of 26 tho lmao.

10:35 On top of the fact that all these Japanese people speak perfect English, a hunch and a quick Google search confirmed that Yuki is played by Harry Shum Jr, aka Mike Chang from Glee (one of my favorite Glee characters). @@thatamericanbritishbloke5672 it's because it's a more foreign country than others since it didn't open to the world until recently vs other countries so the only way you could be exposed to it was through tv or maybe products that came from Japan. I had watched this when I was a kid and even I knew that it wasn’t accurate. My dad had business trips overseas and at some points he went to Japan. He would tell me all about how great the people were, how unique everything was, the awesome sights, even the weird game shows like ‘Wasabi Ball’. Despite all the differences though, he did nothing but praise how wonderful it was. Here’s a quote from him that I’ll always remember:
“There’s some pretty weird things over there, but it’s a good kind of weird. We think it’s weird because it’s not the norm for us. People out there think we’re weird too. But what really matters is meeting them. If you really want to know what people around the world are like, you need to get out there and see them yourself.”
A few years after he told me this, he, my mom, and I went to France. Tons of them definitely thought mom and I were hilarious because we were the complete confused tourist stereotype (a group of guys teased us by saying ‘bonjour’ in the evening). I think a comedy radio show mentioned the word ‘Americans’ at some point in a joke, but aside from those instances, a huge majority of them were really wonderful and patient with my mom and I’s dumbassery. A group even helped me out when I was lost despite the language barrier. They were obviously not the French caricature that was shown in the special and I’m positive that France has web shows that are WAY better than the one depicted as ‘France’s best’.
Overall, this was just a plain racist special that painted other cultures in a bad light. Yes, Japan is different. Yes, France is France. That doesn’t define the people who live there though.

Even as a weeb, I can tell you that Japan might not be a great place to live in. There's a lot of cultural differences compared to the US and Europe you'd have to get used to, and Tokyo is an extremely busy, noisy city. In the end, Japan is not some magical land, it's just another place where life happens to you.
5:18 Don’t let Poofesure hear you say that.
The synergy is pretty amazing. A reviewer who lived a decade in Japan, commenting on a show going to Japan, sponsored by snacks from Japan? That's the hat trick!
I did rewatch the show recently and it surprisingly still made me laugh and had good jokes in it, despite certain things being written by a creep that didn’t age well, I still found the show to be entertaining. I think this episode specifically was over exaggerating for the sake of comedy and some of the lines just sounded more ignorant than straight up racist.
Speaking of Japan I never really understood why so many people seem to view it as some magical holy place to live or be, my guess is that a lot of people just assume their own culture is pretty bankrupt in a sense to want to seek out another so bad.
I've had a lot of friends and people that I knew that were obsessed with it, learning to speak/read/write in Japanese and viewed any food or snack/drink as immediately better simply because it was Japanese. I really do respect their commitment to hard work and superior quality in a lot of things but people have to realize it's a place like everywhere else, just because it looks like fun in anime doesn't mean it is in the real world.
If people out there feel like where they live is really boring (and hey it may be that) I'd encourage you to just travel period, go to Asia, go to Europe and check out other areas (even if you live in the US or Canada for example)
id say it's mostly bc of anime & manga that ppl assume it's this 😱 amazing cool magical place with awesome people who can do no wrong 🤩😁🥰😍 since those r potentially the only forms of japanese media they consume. like yeah anime is super cool! but most times it's not reality
Yeah, humanity has always had a "grass is always greener on the other side" form of wonderlust (which is kinda really deeply set in our DNA, since ancient hominids used to migrate a lot).
It kinda reminds me of how early Hollywood would advertise a lot of glitz and glamour back in the '20s/'30s through their movies and radio, enough for people to glorify it as a paradise when it wasn't always that way (something similar to how the Gold Rush was advertised as well). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I fhought it was because its safer & crime is lower there.
Not no crime. Just less.

There was a group I used to hang out with in high school that made plans to live in Japan together. Not sure if they ever followed through but their reasoning was because “Japan is more advanced than America.”
The best thing about this movie is the sign saying "I don't speak Spanish" IN ENGLISH
I grew up in a area with a very large Japanese community, and even had some Japanese lessons in elementary school, so seeing this as a kid was just so bizarre. Like, I couldn't understand why this was what people thought Japan was like. Then I grew up and realized that the answer was just 🌟xenophobia 🌟.
Edit: I can tell you, it *is* xenophobia because of the way this trend of treating Japanese people as either crooks or idiots started. In the wake of WWII, it was extremely common to depict everyone from Japan as seen in this episode. It's specifically because of the fear and hatred of that nation and what they did that this behavior can still be seen in our media. The episode isn't about Xenophobia, but it is absolutely dripping with the effects of it.
I think this depiction of Japan is less xenophobia and more Orientalism
Not really xenophobia, more like just plain ignorance/misinformation through the lens of exoticism.
The place I live I wouldn’t say had a large Japanese and Indian population, but there is a group of Asians and Indians in the community that didn’t take up most of the population of the town, but took up some of it
Why'd you put stars around the word xenophobia 🤨 Also xenophobia is the irrational fear of foreigners that wasn't what was happening in the episode.
Yeah, I remember watching some of Dan Schneider’s other stuff not too long ago, and the way he presents foreign cultures is something else. I just thought, “this couldn’t have had a positive effect on the kids who grew up watching these shows.”
I went to a boarding school halfway across the world from where I live and that's exactly how I feel! The whole thing ended just as suddenly as it started, and since coming back home Ive tried explaining it to a few people. The only way i could describe it was that it felt like a dream and had never really happened, but they didnt seem to really get it. Its been a couple years and its still crazy to think about. Like, how did that happen??
Its weird to leave and go do something completely different and then come back and have to get readjusted to place you grew up in
Cool :)
How did u do that?
13:42 dude literally put up a sign that said, “I don’t speak Spanish,” in English…🤦🏾♀️
Man ICarly goes to Japan sure is a movie, that exists
The part of them having a karate fight because they are japanese really got me in stitches
6:12 same man. That was indeed painful
“Get up and show him what your foot tastes like” had me legit giggling for a while.

Never was a big iCarly fan so I had no idea about this movie but I remember a Japanese episode for Suite Life on Deck. I think there was so many episodes set in foreign countries because we as a whole in the US know so little about the culture in other countries such as Japan that we misunderstood & fantasize it which leads to tend to lead to harmful stereotyping of that culture. I mean most of us only know what we've seen in anime, read in manga, or some dishes/snacks we've had which is surface lvl at best of the culture
To be fair, it's pretty much the same over there too. The most exposure Japanese have of western people, is holloweird.
@@THETRIVIALTHINGS This is true. They have a surface lvl of our cultures too & don't understand that we as a country have different cultures depending on were in the US u are & the family that raised u. They just think we're all mostly overweight, loud, & abrasive
@@claratalbot7613 Or good-looking, oblivious and can't speak a lick of Japanese. Many Japanese people will be surprised if you can speak proper "non-anime" Japanese in a native way.
That is very true! I think this too whenever a US kids show had a British character or they visited London. It’s always like the character has stepped out from the 1800’s and talk like rich gentlemen with top hats. We have progressed since then, and I’ve never in my life seen a man walk around with a top hat on 😂.
It’s always a stereotype but one from 200 years ago. It just highlights how little these shows cared about normalising a character or cultures that are from somewhere outside of the US
@@jimmehsullivan123 Yep. The most cringy one was the mom. Nothing against the actress but the talking slowly towards someone from another culture or country is so bad especially when they've been speaking perfect english. I understand sometimes an accent is really thick but it just means that u may have to politely ask the person to repeat themselves. The other thing is just to listen better & pick up as much as possible. I've been lucky enough to be around strong accents like German & I while understand that it can be hard but one of the worst thing u can do is insult the person by talking slowly to them. It gives the impression that they're dumb & can't understand anything
5:08 Me whenever I get bullied or teased or framed for something.
I was so unaware of the racism growing up. Rewatching these episodes was a nightmare
Dont read my name!.....Dont read my name!.....
Eh, don't think it's exactly racism. More like not knowing anything about Japanese people and relying on stereotypes.
Pretty sure it was more of an American show not knowing anything about Japan rather than intentionally being racist
@@CoolScratcher it’s ignorance and disrespecting a culture, misinforming others (children) about that culture too, it’s racism because it’s ignorance and misinformation
@@CoolScratcher perpetuating stereotypes whether it’s intentional or not is still pretty racist. I don’t think they had ill attentions but it definitely causes harm in young audiences
What a great video on icarly going to Japan. RUclips, you should recommend this channel to more people. ;)

I agree about how weird an experience like that can feel afterwards, I went on vacation to Japan 7 years ago and now it just feels so strange looking back on it, there’s still a part of me that’s like “Was that even real?”
Great videos, love the animations. Keep it up Alex
Looking back at the show now that I’m older, it’s pretty cringey but it definitely has its moments.
I agree
Thank God there are people that think Dan “Get I. The Van” Schneider’s shows are full of bad qualities that date this show even more than your average 20th Century product, but yeah, I guess they have their small share of good moments…

I remember being like a youngish teen when this show was on, and even then I was never really super into it cause I found it too loud and annoying haha. Great video! xx
same!
Yeah I watched it like 8-11yrs old and I absolutely loved it. My grandma didn't like it and I would beg to watch it, or sneak it on tv when she was out
I never understood the web show itself, if was so.... Odd? Off? Unhinged, and not in a funny way...?
Not sure what it was really, but the rest of the show wasn't the worst..

I live in Canada and that reaction they had to going there was amazing, given that like half of Canada's history was just no one wanting us but not wanting other country's to own Canada.
I think it's the fact that Canada is not far from the US and is not too different of a culture, so they're disappointed it's not a bigger trip.
@@bel8910 I know.
Actually their specific reaction in the show (to my knowledge) is because Sam is legally not allowed in the country
sam was blacklisted at the Canadian border in an earlier episode
Even before how they handle the super cereal bat virus nobody wanted to go there.
7:15 "Are you winning, son????"
This will never stop being funny 😂
The last segment is so relatable, I sometimes even question if anything from me living abroad was real. And because I went back to the life I lived right before moving, my brain casually erases some of my abroad memories just to make some sense out of my current lifestyle.
Talking about part of of your life feeling like you didn't actually live it?

I’ve studied abroad in Japan and now that a few years passed, I still can’t believe I did it. And when I came back to the states, nothing in my life changed and I fell back into my old, non-adventurous routine so me going to Japan by myself really feels like something I didn’t do
