Even out of context of the story Webber & TIM RICE were trying to tell, Ted Neeley's performance brings a tear to my eye. Once you see the movie and see the question the writers posed, the weariness in Ted Neeley's voice makes even more sense. There have many performances but no-one touches Ted Neeley.

The song "Judas's death" will tear you apart, you need to watch the whole movie. The very beginning, where they pull up in a bus and start unloading props starts to show the personalities of the various characters and sets the stage. As time passes they start to become their characters until they are utterly lost in the story themselves.

God came down from heaven as a man (Jesus) and experienced all the emotions and temptations that an earthly man would, yet He led a sinless life. Be sure to see Jesus Christ Superstar (1973), ; it is well worth the time. I'm 72 years old now, and I must have seen this movie a dozen times in the eighties. It was one of the tools God employed to hold onto me during my time in the wilderness of those sinful years, leading me to salvation in 1985! Ted Neely was in his early twenties when he performed in this rock opera. Still to this day if you Google him here in RUclips or even Facebook, Ted is still performing this part in Italy yearly. His voice is just as strong and still very gripping to listen to.
A great person too meet and even great to have a conversation with. I have a long with most of the cast from the movie. All except for Carl Anderson, Judas and The gentlemen who played King Herod.
Ted also tours the US with some of the cast from "Jesus Christ Superstar", anniversary tours.

I've seen the live performance with Ted Neely and Carl Anderson and consider myself lucky.
The writing is a combination of genius and devine intervention.
Carl Anderson is magnificent from the opening # , Heaven on their minds till his ending.
Since then I've seen 4 other productions and it's always satisfying. Please go see it if you can.

oh man, as someone who has loved that movie since the early 90s (and gotten to meet Ted Neely! genuinely one of the softest and kindest people i have ever met.) i was so dearly enjoying your reaction. the movie is very much set in contemporary (VERY VERY 70s) times and the lyrics reflect that often - but Neely's Jesus - nicknamed "Screaming Jesus" for delightfully obvious reasons - and Carl Anderson's Judas both have such unbelievable power and pathos. i do hope you get a chance to sit and watch the whole thing through one of these days. it's very much concerned with Jesus the man. yes, he's the son of God - but born to a human mother in a human body with human needs. and, as you saw in his moment of doubt and uncertainty in the garden, Ted brings some of the most heartbreaking humanity to the role he is playing. through the movie, it shows his growing discomfort, concern, and even fear with people refusing to hear him explain that he's a man, and instead choosing to believe he is directly God himself. Carl Anderson does an EXQUISITE job of trying desperately to bring Jesus' attention to this before it's too late, and the narrative does an amazing job of showing that the choices he made were for the love of Jesus, the man.
it's VERY 70s, and at times VERY campy. but the parts that hit? hit like this scene in the garden. i do hope you watch it and enjoy it one of these days. ❤

This is the original Jesus Christ Superstar. It's a Rock opera from the 1970s. Believe it or not this movie brought a lot of people back in the 70s to church. People who would not step foot in a church until they saw this. San Francisco Catholic church saw an influx of young people because this movie spoke to them...

This movie was directed by the great Norman Jewison, a legendary director. He was able to get some of the most powerful performances from a cast of relative unknown actors and singers. Only Barry Dennen, the actor playing Pilate, had experience in musical films. Norm also directed Fiddler On The Roof, which is where he worked with Barry and Barry presented the original Brown album to him and suggested that he make a movie from the album. Norm loved the idea and took it to Universal, where he got a very small budget to make the movie.
The studio wanted more known actors in lead roles, but that would eat too much of the already low budget. He hand picked Ted Neely (Jesus) and Carl Anderson (Judas) from two unknown actors, but they both knocked it out of the park, you will be just as impressed with Anderson, but for different reasons. His delivery is also very heart felt.
The album was written by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber (music) and Tim Rice (lyrics) and was a unique idea of viewing Jesus through the eyes of Judas. It makes Judas a more sympathetic character, which is probably not accurate, but like most art, it asks the question “what if”.
Everyone in the movie did a phenomenal job, but the parts of Jesus and Judas are the two biggest roles in the movie and boy do they deliver. Norm Jewison is the mastermind behind this cinematic masterpiece, which is why it has stood the test of time, even though the lifts maybe dated. Yvonne Elliman also gives a heart wrenching performance as Mary Madeline.

You would absolutely love that movie!!! And I was taught that Jesus was a human that had Divine capabilities...that was actually the point...that he was human, and God could live in each of us. We are not separate from God. So, yes, this viewpoint is to make him/God more relatable to every individual.

Ted Neely has one of the best voices I’ve ever heard! I highly recommend getting the album and watching the movie…”Jesus Christ superstar”. My parents took me to see it live on Broadway and they also made a movie of same in the 1980s. Neely’s voice has so much emotion that you end up crying. Ironically I’m an Atheist, but it’s so beautiful that I always get goosebumps…especially when Ted Neely sings! I’m so happy you enjoyed it. 😊☺️❤️
