San Diego, California - I've been wanting to make this "Best Pizza in San Diego" episode for a long time. As a New York native, I was worried when I first moved to San Diego that there wasn't going to be any good pizza. I was wrong.
There are so many incredible pizza places here in San Diego, and this episode is just an example of how many good spots there are in the city. To prove it, I even made a map of all the pizza places people suggested that I visit while making this San Diego food vlog!

Sister's Pizza
Dude! Some good ones and you gotta visit Mom's Pizza in Sorrento Valley and the OG 🐐s Blind Lady Ale House
and Pauly's Pizza Joint.
Awesome video and reviews.
Gelati and Peccati in North Park is authentic and everything is good, especially the Lussuria.
Pizza Bella in Old Town is great, especially the Sigma-Chi.
I’m local and love the slices at Square Pizza! 😍 They have different styles to choose from too!
I was born in San Diego in 1980 and lived in Kensington. when it comes to the best there is none other than Venice Pizza House on El Cajon Blvd. Since 1954. It makes me sad its not on your list. I recommend "The Works" or the #12 as it used to be referred to. I now live in Murrieta, CA and I will not hesitate to drive the 70 miles to get that pizza.
@Gary Denison - that's funny, I've gone to Venice with friends a few times, but 1) it was several years ago and 2) we always got pasta, which was also excellent, btw. I'll have to check out the pizza. What is their best?
The Chicago Pizza company in Santee blows that place out of the water
dude did you read the paper? they might be closing down...so sad
@@oiitzME1266 really ? I live close by and always get it . What’s the word ?
@@danieldunlap4077 that is easily the worst pizza in san diego they used pre baked crust
Absolutely the best pizza video I have ever watched!!! Great job guys. Love the chemistry you 3 have!!
Thanks for the awesome video 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽. I work a block away from Square pizza. So so excited to try out for lunch tomorrow. Thanks guys!
CT native that just visited San Diego. So happy to see the New Haven style bar pizza represented. The hot honey pizza (locally usually called the Hot Lips or the Stinger depending where you go) is a favorite for sure. And potato pizza, for whatever reason, is really popular too. Great looking pies all around!
Perfect timing for this pizza vid! We are heading to Coronado in a few months and for sure will hit a few of these joints. Great job, guys!
Great video. Bronx is always a favorite and I just had a pizza at Buona Forchetta a couple of weeks ago for a friend’s birthday. Both great places and appreciate these other recommendations - will give them a try.
Thanks James! Definitely so many great styles of pizza here in San Diego - far better than I ever expected moving out here!
I just happened upon this channel tonight, love all these San Diego spots being featured!
Thank you for this video! Lived in San Diego all my life and have always wanted to try a really good pizza place!
Having lived in San Diego since 1993 I can say you definitely hit some of the best spot. Bronx Pizza was my home for years because I lived a block away. Two spots I also love are Mr. Motos and Isola in Little Italy. Great video.
Does Bronx still only accept cash? Also, I've had pizza in the Bronx near Yankee Stadium, but I've always thought Bronx Pizza was actually better.
I never thought I would better pizza than NYC, but wow, the pizza in Little Italy is great.
Lol, the conversational interactions in this video were superb, lol, 😁😁😭. Also, places 2,3 & 5 looked,👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽. I’d definitely try the 2nd one if it’s non-gmo et I absolutely spotted what looked like some handcrafted artisan beer at the 3rd location. I seldom drink beer but know plenty of amis who would love that. Overall, fun video hun, 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽💕💕✊🏽
Thanks for the recommendations, gonna have to try them! Another place I think worth checking out is Regents Pizzeria in LJ/UTC area.
Ahhh I used to love this one! I used to go there when the original creator and owner was there, before he passed. Their pizza was my favorite in SD when I lived there. Almost suggested it but wasn’t sure if it was as good anymore. They used to add real fresh grated big chunks of Parmesan on top and that was incredible. :P
Regents Pizza is my favorite for Chicago Style, it’s definitely like the ones I had in Chicago.
Damn. How did they miss Regents. Absolute FIRE
Regents should have definitely been on here
I love Regents for their pizza, but they cook a FANTASTIC bacon cheeseburger!!
Fun to see you and your best friends enjoying so much pizza in San Diego .I grew up in Connecticut where there are lots of neighborhood pizza places usually run by families .When I moved to San Diego in 1988,there were'nt any small neighborhood places .Thanks for making the video .Do you have to pay for all the pizzas or does the restaurants comp you?
Yes there were a number of great neighborhood places you just did not know where to look, can tell you didn't really know anything about SD.
CT people know their pizza. Nothing beats New Haven.
Can’t have a list without Venice Pizza House. It’s a local classic 👌
Amen Brother
HAY'LL YEAH!!!
Real talk
🙌🙌🙌
Hi Gareth, Thanks for this video. I'm visiting San Diego from San Francisco. I ate at Buona Forchetta tonight and it was AMAZING! Tutti Motto Benne--Grazie!
😁 Smiling over here. 😁 Your videos always make me smile. Also, I miss San Diego and I love seeing your food videos around town.
Thank you so much! 🙌
Great video!!! The square pizza looked delicious. I will definitely be trying that next time out there. For me Filippis Pizza Grotto is the best pizza. Definitely try the little Italy one for a great old world experience.
As someone living in San Diego I really appreciate this kind of channels that tells me where to go to get good food! new subscriber here!
Buona Forchetta is my favorite pizza place! Thanks for the video!
Another set of places to add to the food tour! Personal favorite pizza places of mine are Sicilian Thing Pizza in North Park and Pizza E Birra on India St.
Sicilian Thing is pretty good. I get the square “thing”. Eat it for a week
Thanks for the map. A lot of new places to try.
Absolutely! I really did it so I would remember myself 🤣
My favorite is Pizza Port Solana Beach, but only went there once for the 30th anniversary (the one in Ocean Beach is much closer). My go to is High Tide in Coronado. People say Bronx is the best, but not a fan of thin crust like that
Wow very impressed ! Love your channel overall .
Thank you very much! 🙌
@@GarethLeonard My brother lives out in S.D. he said TNT Pizza is very good. Keep up the great work.
Love this! Been to Bronx and Leftys so gotta hit the other spots.
Planning to try square after watching your video
Always looking for places to eat. I live in Claremont would love to hear any good Mexican food around balboa and convoy area.
What are the best restaurants on convoy?
So good..thank you for the tour!!
I have to try the Urban spot. Great video, Gareth!
SD❤️!!
Yes! I highly recommend it, Zaia! 🥳
Want ro try them all ! The 🍯 honey one , tempting . That last one intrigued me . Thank you for sharing . Want to try them ALL , that's it . Can't wait for Croatia vlog .
Thank you Monica! I can't wait to experience Croatia and share it all!! I definitely recommend trying them all, and the honey special was really amazing!
I think the show's format with the music choice + b-roll combo is unmatched. I'm tired of the ubiquitous license free hip hop/trap beats in all the other videos on RUclips these days. good pacing, lo-fi/jazzy beat in the background behind the dialogue is *chefs kiss*. This channel captures the SD essence. good work
Like your channel, love the places you go
This was such a fun video, man! I loved seeing you and your friends enjoy the Chicago-style pizza. Chicago-style gets a lot of hate from a lot of people, but as a Chicagoan myself, I love it! Looks like a super fun day overall. You can't go wrong when it's a day filled with pizza, right?
Agreed. That was awesome!
Thanks Brandon, I appreciate it! It was definitely just a fun laidback style video that fed the soul (and the stomach)! 😆
Thanks, Aaron!
Lefty’s is one my favs. But it’s for the thin and crispy
@@GarethLeonard Coming from a Chicagoan, Regents Pizzeria’s Chicago Style Meatlovers has the best in SD
Love all these places! Knew Matteo before Buona Forchetta, so happy for his family's success! Another spot I can't get enough of is Venice Pizza House on 33rd and El Cajon. Oh shoot: shout out to Blind Lady and their egg and bacon pizza.
Nice to meet you today Gareth. Keep up the great videos
Your videos are great you deserved to have more views!
Love this! I can't wait to go back to San Diego! Weather is Awesome ! Well better then here in Vegas! 🎰🥵 Thanks for the video! 💪
Yes, but after spending 10 years in SD, 3 yrs in Vegas and we just moved back to SD ...Vegas has some of the best pizza places these 2 New Yorkers ever had... including NY!! Rebellion, Pizza Rock and Good Pie we're faves.
Oh yeah, I can't imagine living in Vegas in the summer. 🥵
I gotta try those spots next time I'm in Vegas!
@@GarethLeonard 3 years was too much. So glad to be back in SD!
I've been to Square Pizza many times when I visit San Diego. Best pizza ever! Fred's pizza are just amazing! I was drooling when they brought out that Detroit. I need another trip back to P.B. soon to get my fix!! They also have Brazilian cheese bread that melts in your mouth. Holy hell - this video was great. It's making me so hungry now! 🙂
which place has the brazilian cheese bread O_O?
@@TheBambi507 I'd like to know as well !
@@TheBambi507 Square Pizza has the best Brazilian cheese bread. The owners - Fred & Poli are Brazilian.
@@deilugo4813 Square Pizza has the best Brazilian cheese bread. The owners - Fred & Poli are Brazilian.
I’ve had them all except Square; excited to try it. Pretty good list!
Square Pizza is amazing!!! Definitely Detroit style. These guys are spot on - it looks like it's a very heavy Chicago deep dish but it's really light. Love that place!
Thanks Kelly, do you have a favorite spot?
@@GarethLeonard your list is pretty good....buona forchetta is one of my faves, and Ambrogio 15 (in PB not Little Italy)
The pizza is so big. Enjoy guys. Happy weekend.
Thank you, you too!
Awesome video!
This was fun and trying squares for sure. Bronx fan already 👍
Yes, highly recommend it!! 🙌
I should’ve ate before watching this.. lol I really could go for some pizza right now 😋 thank you for the video 🔥
I’ve tried the 4 out of the 5. Buona Forchetta is by far my favorite. That’s if you’re into authentic Italian style pizza. Basic pizza is okay IMO. I haven’t been to square pizza but that’s because I tend to stay away from PB. 😂
Haha, that's fair, but it is worth the trip... and then turn around and get out of there! 😅
Square is so fucking good. Worth the trip.
I grew up eating the white pizza @ the Bronx Pizza. Then got a roommate who worked at Leftys so grew to love that too but that Detroit pizza looks delicious.
Ha, sounds like you've had a great mix! 🙌
Love Lefty's !! will have to try the other places..
Born, raised, and still here 60 years later. You did a nice job! Especially the end where you suggest that "...there's 5 for you to try...". Despite the title! For "best" I might have gone more old-school established SD spots, but since you're new to SD? Kidding, but comparatively speaking you are... Good job, fun video.
All of them look amazing in their own way😍🤤
Incredible video!
This was a really good review of San Diego pizza. As someone that is new to the area (1 year) I still don't know anything about the city. Item of note, the Detroit style place offers by the slice.
The guy who served you at lefties touched me in my sleep
Love Detroit style pizza so good to know about Square. Will have to try them out. We’ve done TNT Pizza for Detroit and NY style pizza and they are really good. Would love to see how they measure up to the ones you all reviewed
If you like Detroit style pizza, you'll love this! I guarantee it.
The best one two punch Lefty’s & Square Pizza 🍕. They all looked tremendous but I’m a thick crust guy. No wimpy NY style.
the last one😊💜💜💜 I'm driving to SD real soon
Haha, well worth the drive Violet! ❤️
Now I want pizza! 🤤🤤🤤 great video
Haha, do it!
I'd recommend trying Sisters Pizza in Hillcrest. Great pizza 🍕
I can’t wait to try all that places too ☺️
Great video!! I actually like Luigi’s in GH better than Bronx 😂
The problem I found in San Diego is no consistency in the pizzas. One is the pizza can be great for a little while then next can be not so great. Like when new owners take over and they try to maximize profits by skimping on ingredients while charging more for the pizza. It's like a hit or miss game.
I've always loved Mona Lisa's margherita pizza in Little Italy. If you love garlic, it's a must try.
laughing at your intro description.... having tried pizza in egypt i can agree but they do have great pastas and breads!
I grew up in San Diego and you guys were literally right around the corner from the best Pizza. Filippis!!!
Damn 😂😂 Super long intro for the pizza expert friend, then "this is Shag" 😂
Great looking pizza 🍕 Definitely planning a San Diego foodie trip soon!
My guy Fred! Hardest worker in the biz. Traditional Fred fashion to drive down from Julian on his day off to make 1 pizza. Long Live Square Pizza! Go get a hot slice. Eat it there while it's hot and grab a bag of frozen slices to bring home.
Looks so yummy! 🤗
Which one would you try first Sylvia?
Go Square Pizza! Square is the new round! “Hummingbird brick” I loved it!
Haha, I'm trying to convince them to use it as their tagline!
I will try all of them. Also, thanks for the map.
Cheers Jesus! Let me know which one you like the best! 🙌
@@GarethLeonard I'll sure do. Thanks!
I tried Square Pizza because of this video and ...oh my God! AMAZING! My new favorite pizza in San Diego!
You got the sausage pie at Lefties....great choice! I used to line close to lefties North Park
Omggggg I need to Try the deep dish pizza 😍😍😍
Such a unique and delicious pizza. Please come to SoCal!
As a local of San Diego you guys hit all my favorite spots. I love it when new people come to San Diego to have our delicious foods.
What's basic like compared to Urban. Wasn't impressed with basic
@@rich8381 Never been to Basic, but I got a large cheese pie from URBN on doordash and legit ate the whole thing. It was one of the best pizzas I've ever had.
Tanks looking forward to tray them specially chicago one ass well the last one
North Park Friendly for the best slice of pie. Yall killed the SD pizza scene. Love the channel Gareth
Lived here my whole life. My 2 SD favs: Basic potato bacon and also Can’t beat that Bronx combo 2 slices & a soda!!
Made my day!
Filippi's Pizza Grotto in Little Italy is my favorite so far in San Diego. A little further? RANCE'S CHICAGO PIZZA!!! 🤤🤤. I would drive 2 hours easily to get some Rance's. Costa Mesa is my favorite location
I do love Filipi's, but the community is split on them lol
I think santee location is the best. Haven’t tried little Italy yet. But fillipis is my number one pizza. Lol I have a few slices in the fridge right now 😂
If you ever go up to redlands area you should try the gourmet pizza shoppe! They’ve got a whole section on the menu called “on a pizza…?” And they’ve got some really odd concoctions but pretty good
Props for the Pearl Jam shirt!
Gotta do that pizza tour in SD soon.
Most definitely!
square pizza is my favorite and most consistent spot
As a former San Diegan and I've eaten at all the places you guys went to I have to say hands down the very best pizza is Fred's at Square Pizza!! He is a total artisan and I really miss the place!!! Must try for everyone for sure!!
I like you guys ! New sub here from Quebec !
You guys need to try Massachusetts Mikes pizza in hillcrest. It's near Bronx pizza so it doesn't get the love it deserves but the stuff is amazing!
And they're so nice too!
Had a recent pleasant surprise of a great pizza at a place called Rogers Pizzerolo Italian Grill near grantville area. Delish!
You guys have to try El Jefe pizza!
I love it!!
Cheers Dexter! 👍
There's also an Urbn at One Paseo in Carmel Valley/Del Mar. The potato pizza is my fave hands down.
Great video! Iv'e tried 4 out of the 5. I live 2-3 blocks from Bronx so its a go to but for me the best pizza in San Diego is Tribute Pizza and they stand a good level above all others to me.
Paul - where is Tribute located?
@@moeball740 North Park. the name is because they do an homage to famous pizzas around the world.
I haven't been out and about since the covid thing started, but the first thing I usually do when moving to a new area is find the best pizza. I used to live in south Orange County for most of my life and moved to Phoenix to help my parents, and now back in San Diego. I have tried about five different places and tried to go to Bronx Pizza but got so frustrated by the parking situation I gave up. A couple of months ago I finally tried Luigi's in North Park which was one of the best pizzas I have found, and I still have a few on my list to try.
That’s it’s Bronx u gave up on and Luigi’s? What else u try?
Sicilian Thing and The Pizza Standard are some of my favorite spots that weren't mentioned. The mashed potato pizza from URBN has a special place in my heart tho.
I gotta try those two!! 👍
love sicilian thing, having both ny and thick crust pizzas is very nice.
Living in PB, Square Pizza was already my go-to spot in the neighborhood but this is validation that my taste is exquisite.
7:34 they also have locations in north county as well, Vista and Encinitas
Just visited San Diego again recently, made a point to get a pie from the Bronx. Favorite pizza place hands down.
I agree! definitely a solid slice on the west coast! 👊
Thanks dude, we're going to San Diego in about 10 days,we're going to try to hit all places
Next time you're in San Diego, try Lido's in Lemon Grove. My favorite in all of SD.
10:38 a fried egg on top is an excellent idea!!!
Decided to do some solo travelling in the US: LA san diego and chicago. This video made me glad i randomly selected san diego
Mom's Pizza Sorrento Valley had a focaccia-like crust that's to die for. Pauly's Pizza Joint for NY style (get their Christmas Pie) and BLAH (Blind Lady Ale House) for the greatest small artisan pizzas.
I gotta try these spots!! Thanks, Adam. 👊
I'm the kitchen manager at moms, thanks for the shout out 👍
Great to see this! Buona Forchetta is my favorite in SD, followed by Blind Lady Ale House. A good note about Buona Forchetta is that their gluten-free crust is amazing and, arguably, even better than the regular crust. No joke! I haven't tried Lefty's, Square, or Bronx yet but will soon. Thanks!
Eh I've boycotted Buona Forchetta after the lame shit they tried pulling on Lefty's.
@@larrymee1484 I haven't heard anything about that.
@@larrymee1484 What's that about?
Blind Lady is amazing. And great beer too of course.
@@brandonward2708 As far as I know, they posted up right by the entrance of Leftys with a portable pizza oven and started selling pizza and talking down to the workers at Leftys. I'm not sure if there are other things they have done, but for that, I will not support them.
Buona is amazing, I like the sister location in Point Loma
Found this channel. Ive lived in SD for 8 years and this guy doesnt miss with the suggestions. lol
love your San Diego food videos 😋 super bad to watch during lunch though 🥵
Oh yeah favorite pizza in San Diego is Milo's but back when the old guy was working the oven. The young guys overcook the pies a bit.
