    Hi Melvin - I have just come across your video (perfect timing) as I have been researching this particular head. I will be wanting to use this head for producing panoramic images, but I have an information gap that needs addressing.
    | am having great difficulty establishing if the head rotates above the tripod centre - to explain: I am not so much worried about the fore/aft movement as that can be dealt with by the nodal rail adjusting the NPP point on the lens - but it is imortant (at least according to my research) to have the head centered on the left/right axis in order to give the stiching program the best chance of success.
    Can this head accommodate this?

    Hi Melvin. If I can ask you a question please. I really like the look of this head but I have one reservation. Can the camera be tilted so as to face directly upwards?? I'm thinking for up through tree or tall buildings type shots. Thanks. Mike Jenkinson

      Hi Michael. You will have limited movement when wanting to direct the camera to the sky due to the rear vertical knob catching the tripod base so Benro have created the geared head spacer. You can order it directly from WEX. Call them and place your order if they're showing 'Out of stock' or 'Awaiting stock'. www.wexphotovideo.com/benro-gdhad1-geared-head-adaptor-1682261/

    I don’t think this can do what I need but I’m hoping that you can confirm. I’ll explain via a scenario:
    I’m forced to set up my tripod in a manner that results in the base (upon which I screw on the head) isn’t level. Can this head be configured so that I can rotate the head to capture a series of even panoramic shots (as opposed to tilted panorama)?

    • @melvinnicholsonphotographycom
      @melvinnicholsonphotographycom  5 лет назад +1

      Hi SS. You require a Benro LBA2 Levelling Adjustment Base £109.99 to allow you to level the tripod head regardless of the level of the tripod. I have one and it's fantastic for setting up pano shots quickly. www.parkcameras.com/p/6375926R/tripod-heads/benro/lba2-levelling-adjustment-base

    I purchased the Benro Geared Head to replace a Manfrotto 410 head that siezed up in one of the movements...after 20 yrs of use! I loved that it was much lighter and, at last, Arca Swiss compatible. However, the QR locking knob loosened and fell off somewhere during my second job shooting, leaving me unable to remove the camera from the head. I got it loosened later with a pair of pliers. Like others, I can't even speak to B&H customer service or order another until after Passover 5 days from now!
    Aside from that, there is a lot of play in two of the geared movements. As much or more than the worn out Manfrotto head it replaced. This head gets really high reviews and I really wanted to like it, but will have to return it. I'm going to look into DIY repair of the 410 head and see if I can get another 20 years out of it!

      Hi Bate. Oh dear. So your QR locking knob on the Benro GD3WH geared head fell off on the second time of using? I've not heard of one doing that. How unusual. Did B&H sort it for you?

    Nice review, Melvin! Thank you.
    I am planning on buying this head to shoot a stop-motion short-film. For this, I need a head that can stand my camera (a Fuji X-T2) without moving at all for more than 30 hours straight. It would be a plus if it wouldn't break after two years of daily use. Which do you think would better suit me, a Manfrotto 410 or this Benro? Thank you!

    • @melvinnicholsonphotographycom
      @melvinnicholsonphotographycom  5 лет назад

      Hi Marina. Glad you found the review useful.
      My opinion having used both the Manfrotto and the Benro is to go for the Benro.
      Weight is my biggest concern as I have to lug around the equipment all day and over difficult terrain sometimes. The Manfrotto weighs in around 1.2kg while the Benro an incredible 750g. That's a huge saving. The Benro is far and away more durable. Having dropped both of the heads on the ground from time to time, the Manfrotto became unusable whereas the Benro while damaged, still allowed me to continue using it due to its more durable materials used.
      And lastly I found the Benro to be smoother and easier to operate and to remain so whereas the Manfrotto became stiffer to turn the adjuster knobs over a period of time.
      There you go, my verdict. Let me know how you get on whichever product you purchase. Have a great day Marina :-)

    I just receive my Benro GD3WH and as I have tested I have realized that I have a problem with my TS-e Canon 17mm, the knobs of the lens are hitting into the locking knob for the plate
    I have a L bracket plate for easy vertical & horizontal position.
    I have tried to put the camera 180 degrees around Z axis, but it's even worse
    I have found a dirty solution to put the original benro plate onto my L bracket, to raise it a little bit.

    • @melvinnicholsonphotographycom
      @melvinnicholsonphotographycom  6 лет назад

      Hi Vase. Yes that can be a problem. The same problem affects the Manfrotto 410 too. Manfrotto brought out a 1" high spacer to place between the tripod and their geared head with elevates the head high enough to allow the rear knob to lower enough. I'm not sure if it will fit properly on the Benro tripod as the base plate on the tripod seems a little narrower. Might be worth a try for £20 www.photospecialist.co.uk/manfrotto-120-38-tripod-adapter

    •  5 лет назад

      You should stick with the Manfrotto 410 and buy the Hejnar Photo Arca swiss conversion plate.

  • @thesharpercoder
    @thesharpercoder 5 лет назад

    Great head. My only complaint is that one of the handles extends below the base. This is not a problem on a tripod column, but it is an issue when you mount it on a flat plate. I had to buy a Manfrotto spacer to mount on the flat plate to provide clearance for the head.
    I wound up buying a geared center column to use with the geared head.

    Hello. Compared to the Manfrotto 410 and considering that carrying weight is not an issue, which one would you use if you are going for the best possible stability in windy conditions? More weight might help with the stability but with the 410, my reservation is about more weight added upper to the system, hence the system's center of weight goes up too which might not be a good thing in windy conditions. Your thoughts on this?

    • @melvinnicholsonphotographycom
      @melvinnicholsonphotographycom  6 лет назад

      Hi Teo. Apologies for the delay in replying, I only returned from New Zealand on Thursday so I am catching up on admin duties.
      I have owned both the very heavy Manfrotto 405 geared head as well as their lighter 410 version and the Benro is rock solid in comparison. The weight of the Benro comes in at 740g (not the 870 quoted by Benro) and it is very well made.
      I hope that helps.
      Best wishes Melvin

  • @gavinphillips3973

    I've been looking for a geared head for a while; for use with either long telephoto or mirror lenses and long macro lenses (or greater than 1:1 at least). However the weight of these has always put me off. I don't doubt that both the Manfrotto 405 and 410's are well-built heads however they are just too heavy for someone who doesn't drive! Manfrotto has their MHXPRO-3WG which is in the same weight bracket as the Benro GD3WH (about 750grams) which makes them a bit lighter and more portable. I'd love to see a comparison between the two but I don't think that'd be an easy thing to do. Even so, thanks for your informative video, until now I was not aware than Benro made geared heads so its another option for me. Brilliant, thank you. If you have ever used the Manfrotto MHXPRO-3WG, I'd love to know what you think about it? Seems there's quite a mix of opinions on that one.

      Hi Gavin. Apologies for the delay in replying. Christmas got in the way. In answer to your question and from someone who has both owned and used the Manfrotto 410 AND 405, the Benro kicks them both to the kerb. Sure the Manfrotto 405 is rock solid but at 1.6kg, is far too heavy. As for the Manfrotto 410, I had so many issues with them which ultimately came down to being designed poorly and out of materials that damage and bend too easily (such as the brass pins inside the knobs). The Benro is almost half of it's weight (Manfrotto 410 1.2kg vs Benro GD3WH at 741g) and is stronger. I have dropped mine on the odd occasion and the knobs have not bent whatsoever. Solid, lightweight and dependable. It is also smooth too with the knobs rotating freely. I have out mine through the ringer since April and I am very impressed.
      As for the Manfrotto MHPRO-3WG with it's rigid technopolymer body, forget it. It has more movement and wobble than my belly after Christmas, lol.
      Hope that helps Gavin.

I'm hoping to upgrade a few camera-related bits and pieces over the next few months and thanks to your in-depth video and reply, I have a feeling I know the Benro GD3WH will be on the purchase list. I also really appreciate your views on the MHPRO-3WG, that is pretty much echoed on a few other youtube videos and written reviews. I've always had alot of faith with the Manfrotto products I use so this is quite a surprise. The 460MG is certainly a favourite tripod head of mine.
      Thank you once again for making the video and the informative reply.
