Goobersnapple Haha, sorry tried my best did this while I was working on my research paper. I decided to hook everyone up with quick links along the way.
+Arina Mile Thank you!! I'm so glad I could help so many people. Yesterday was my birthday it would be cool if some of you could check out the channel (might not be everyones cup of tea). Planning on making some real life videos in the summer. :)
I enjoyed this very much. I don't think Algy Pug did badly, though I do think he was miscast. I would have preferred Martin Geeson as Dorian. Many thanks to all the Librivox volunteers for their time and efforts.
As I write this, I am on chapter 17 of The Picture of Dorian Gray. I am reading it for my schools book club, yet rarely find time to read it. This video helped me so much! I've never listened to an audiobook before and I'm glad this was my first one. Thank you all, the narrarator, voice actors, and even all you commenters for being a part of this new experience for me :) it's truly been great knowing you all, even if I shall never know you.
The moment Dorian Gray starts speaking was the moment I decided to give up on this version.. Everything else was outstanding. What on earth were they thinking? Why didn't the man doing Howard's part do Dorian's voice? Doesn't make any sense whatsoever..
who's describing him as a dull artist throughout the story? Oscar Wilde definitely leads with the impression that he is a brilliant man who's reclusive, mysterious and profoundly inspired by meeting Dorian Gray. That's not presented well in this reading.
@@AveryH7 well i think Oscar portrayed Basil as a person who has a lot of potential but lets his obsessions get in the way of fully utilisng it... he's not dull but he's no genius either, he's simply a flawed human being trying to do his thing as for the description of his artistic abilities in the book, they peaked when he met Dorian but after they parted, his art became sort of mediocre. Basil is passive and helpless throughout pretty much the whole book so i wouldn't praise him much
I love martin geason's voice I've heard him read other audiobooks. his voice always makes me chuckle, it's got such a wonderfully eloquent, bouncy cadence it sounds so decedent, its like a voice out of history. Thanks for posting :)
Because it is supposed to be gay. The book was considered daring and quite sinful at the time and the author was actually sent to prison because of his 'sin', with the book being used in court to prove his homosexuality
@@lanac5793 We are doing this book as the prescribed book for matric year (this year) and its funny because our teacher flat out refuses to acknowledge any gay themes or undertones in the book... she will have no part of it lol
lmao this book was used as evidence against wilde that he was a homosexual. He spent time in prison for that. There is an uncensored version of this book that is much gayer
Thank you for volunteering, thank you for uploading this, you're awesome for doing so. But I gotta say wish the voice acting was a little better, & Dorians voice was different.lol
jon dough Sorry, I meant, you seriously misinterpret the Mandela effect. Read about it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confabulation That should clear the misconceptions that you are exhibiting.
Yes, I remember it as the *portrait* of Dorian Gray. "Painting a picture" of Dorian Gray just doesn't have the same impact. Seems a little lame. Another Mandela Effect.....there's so many.
If you enjoy contemporary gothic stories, of a fantastic, imaginative and surreal nature - involving deluded politicians, power mad dictators, megalomaniacal oligarchs, coldblooded murderers, fanatical ideologues, loners, outsiders, eccentrics, haunted chambers, and a terrifying primeval monster from the deep that inhabits a Scottish loch - then you might like my collection of stories entitled: SEVEN TALL TALES, that is available at Amazon, as a book or a kindle. What the entire fuck.. I don't like reading at all but the picture of Dorian Gray is absolutely beautiful. it's incredibly profound, humorous and shockingly authentic. I can't understand how you can not find this divine.
I think the narrator did a fine job, but the voice actor for Dorian was a poor choice. (They could have swapped Dorian and Basil's voices and been fine!) However, I like the recording nonetheless. It's fine!

I love this book but Oscar Wilde explains things with so many details that I forget what he’s talking about because it’s so long
its the aestheticism

Just put it on 1.75 speed it’s perfect
That moment when you realize that the picture had Dorian's soul, but Lord Henry had Dorian's heart
What's the difference between the heart and the soul anyway ?
@salinakarbache9856
Heart is the vessel for the soul
Thanks for the upload.
My only regret is that Dorian Gray sounds like a 50 yo man ...

I must say they picked an excellent narrator.
Imagine him in sussies
What the heck were you folks thinking, giving the part of beautiful Doiran to THAT guy!?
I think of all of the men that were cast for this, by far, they picked the worst one as Dorian.
It's a librivox recording, it's all done by volunteers. If you think you can do better, by all means feel free to volunteer on the website.
Patrice2911 to be fair, Algy Pug didn't have the same painting to keep him young. :)
I know right? I know its volunteers & its awesome of them to do so,but damn my mind can't help picturing an old toothless man whenever Dorian speaks.
The irony XD
I love the narrators voice so much
Basil's voice is quite anticlimactic for being such an inspired artist
+K Collins He is described as being a dull artist all throughout the story.
who's describing him as a dull artist throughout the story? Oscar Wilde definitely leads with the impression that he is a brilliant man who's reclusive, mysterious and profoundly inspired by meeting Dorian Gray. That's not presented well in this reading.

this audio was super helpful and it helped me understand the book a lot more ! tbh the only thing wrong with it was the voice of dorian💀

I love your voice Martin, thank you again i keep hearing for your voice in other readings.
i dont know why but i felt alot of gay undertones in the first to chapters
Because it is supposed to be gay. The book was considered daring and quite sinful at the time and the author was actually sent to prison because of his 'sin', with the book being used in court to prove his homosexuality
@@lanac5793 We are doing this book as the prescribed book for matric year (this year) and its funny because our teacher flat out refuses to acknowledge any gay themes or undertones in the book... she will have no part of it lol

lmao this book was used as evidence against wilde that he was a homosexual. He spent time in prison for that. There is an uncensored version of this book that is much gayer
Apparently there were a few overtly gay sections of the book that the publisher removed before releasing
Perfect example of classic English literature. What a brilliant style! Reminds me of the so called Pre-Raphaelists, but in literature.
dorian gray sounds like the elephant man...
bahhahahha
Nothing yet save RUclips could use some improvement.
lol he definitely sounds a bit joseph merrick, john hurt would be proud :)
Everyone's little personal bookmarks are so cute
Basil's voice sounds like Tina from Bob's Burgers!
OH MY GOD, kind of YEAH! Nice observation, I don't think I would have noticed without u.
K Collins goddamnit. I can’t unsee it
STAHHHPPPPPP!!! LMFAO why is this true?!?!!?
It would be nice if everyone used the same mic. I wish I had audible
Just in case you missed the first 100 times “this is a librivox recording”
For anyone who needs to speed read this on a time crunch, put the speed at 1.75x it helps so much
it’s impossible to understand at 1.75 for me haha
@@charbertt8384 You don't need to understand chapter 11 xD

What a fantastic performance.

the man voicing dorian is doing a terrible job
It's alright. He's only the titular character.
bella broughton i guess it's safe to assume he didn't have a portrait/painting. Lol
ye why is he like 60
thanx for the uploading

I think that you seriously misinterpret the Mandela effect.

Haha no it's really picture. You just think it's portrait cause it has a nicer ring to it.
You are thinking of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce
Henry talks like he's never the victim of the human's weaknesses he talks like he is the book that depaint them and that is only made for that matter
Thank you for uploading this.
