Why are Russian oligarchs forming private armies? | DW Business

- Reports from Russia suggest Gazprom and other Russian firms are setting up their own private armies.
The state oil firm Gazprom has long employed people with military backgrounds to guard its assets around the world. But industry observers claim an armed unit employed by Gazprom is now active on the front line. That appeared to be confirmed by the head of Russia's paramilitary Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, in an interview.
But other Russian oligarchs are reportedly forming paramilitary groups for future deployment. What are they afraid will happen?

Q. Why are Russian oligarchs forming private armies?
A. Because one day they'll be fighting each other including their head.
for Power!!!✊
This is hilarious to me. Instead of fighting in and for the actual Russian army, these oligarchs are now forming their own private armies under the pretense of helping out in Ukraine because they foresee major political turmoil and a possibility of a future Russian Civil War. Obviously, these men have a tremendous amount of power and money to form them and provide equipment to their soldiers, yet none of them apparently have the balls to remove Putin from the equation before things get that bad. One would think the oligarchs would realize there are many of them, but only ONE Vladimir Putin. 🤔
Just goes to show, no matter how many billions an oligarch may steal from the Russian people, he will still suffer from the Russian curse: peasant brain.
There isn't so many of them left now, obviously why they leap out of windows so often

That's a lie because no one foce him to go he is fighting for his mother Land, you people are haters and lairs.
I see three reasons for these personal armies:
1 - Asset protection (as mentioned)
2 - Vanity ("Hey, I have my own army." or "My army is bigger than yours - my yacht too.")
3 - Personal protection (becoming more and more necessary, I think.)
During WWII Stalin, rather than having his armies work together and coordinate their efforts, left the commanding Generals to compete for resources and race each other to reach Berlin. Putin is just using the same tactic. He pits the regular army against Wagner and expects each to want to succeed where the other fails. These corporate army units are little more than another form of conscription and represent only a minor variation of the overall concept.
For when Putin croaks. There will be a power vacuum. Regional civil wars.
I'd want a private army if I lived in Russia too. You never know when you're walking too close to an open window over there.
Absolute failure of a state in action in Russia and soon to come in China. My fear is that these countries don’t care about ending the world along with themselves. It sounds like these paramilitaries were already in existence in some form, attached to wealthy individuals and/or companies. This suggests a lack of confidence in the larger state for security. That fits with what we've seen with the Russian army and the endless stories of corruption and incompetence. Russia appears to be a ramshackle constellation of lesser poorly defined states or "statelets" within a larger sprawling state. There is no particular reason to believe that any of these states, large or small, are anything other than loosely organized criminal networks with private "muscle." And trust does not extend from one "state" to another. This is a perfect recipe for a civil war. Once strong man Putin begins to decline in an obvious way everything will unravel quickly. China waits patiently. Xi knows what's coming. It happened in China many times in the past.

don't have to pay them if the 'log out' from life
That applies to any army
Well isnt that the point? They can pay them because those private armies protect the wealth resources with wich they pay them
Does it matter if you pay them? The regular RU army isn't paying its soldiers consistently.
It’s a shame that Putin didn’t use his years in power to build up Russian civil society and develop good relations with all of Russia’s neighbors. Things could have been so different.
NATO FRAMED RUSSIA
But if he would, then Russia would become a democracy and there are chances that Putin could not win every Presidential election for decades....
Things would be so different for the people, and for Putin too.
Now, does he wants this?
It would appear that Russia is descending into a new (but extremely old) system of Baronies, with Oligarchs acting as a new Nobility complete with their own retinues, courts, administrations and organised militaries. It seems the Russian World is going back in time in order to move forward as collective society.

Coordination of such diverse armies increases complexity exponentially. This will be a disaster.
Oligarchs are afraid of losing their privileges...
Each of them needs to loot the conquered territories on his own.
It is not about chaos I suspect. All "oligarchs" are largely under state control. Russian army fighting in Ukraine is a contract service. This looks more as another way of funding and mobilisation.
I was thinking the same. They don't want money lost in corrupted army so they make their own armies and fund directly those
it is the pandoras box that is for sure. And I wouldn't be so sure about "state control". We are talking about humans and not robots. so there are factions and it is interesting to see how long Putin can satisfy the needed requirement of carrot and stick for each and everyone in that elite. Surely it is no monolith but more like a hydra that demands constant access to bribery/ corruption and easy state funds
True. This is an another form of mobilisation
And while sanctions limit the states finances, state owned oligarchs are now required to use "their" funds to take mobilization to the next level. The hidden level. State "appears" to be not involved. Keeps the Russian publics' blinders on.
Power flows out of the end of rifle barrels.
Private armies are not a sign of stable government.
Gazprom would normally have preferred to hire ex-convicts as security, but someone has been emptying the prisons, so ex-army was the second best choice :P

Using prisoners does have the cache of plausible deniability…However at the rate Russia’s going through soldiers, plausible deniability went out the window 🪟 along with some poor oligarch that fell out of favor with Vova
Why other countries always supposed to suffer for russia being Russia. Running in circles, but somehow they always manage to rebuild their empire and attack their neighbors but they never consider the wellbeing of the people, primarily their own.
russia don't know how to keep russia inside russia. And now they have this new concept of the russian "Mir" meaning both "the world" and "peace". The concept is that when all the world that (in their eyes) "ought to be" russian has by force become russian, there will be peace. And it doesn't matter how many millions will have to die and suffer to achieve it.
Sounds like Moscow is about to have a "Khartoum moment".Lebanonisation of Russia coming up.

I read somewhere a while back that Shoigu was forming his own PMC, Patriot PMC. What a crazy situation. They had a problem with coordination between branches of the military, this complicates it all more. Since most of the oligarchs are oligarchs at the pleasure of Putin it would suggest that these so called private armies are being formed at least with his blessing and at most with his direction. This may be as a bulwark against the Russian Army if they get any ideas.

Why? It's just a gas company with a private army. That is natural. It is a "natural" gas company after all. Any large company should have their own private army, because... because... because of course they should. It's russia. Look at Prigozhin, he runs a catering business, so he too needs a private army. 50.000. With tanks and fighter planes. What if some customer should complain that the food is cold? If just russia could learn to keep russia within russia.
Interesting. I imagine it started when someone mentioned that alot of retired soldiers went to work for Gazprom security. So a seemingly trained and ready force ripe for conscription, but you don't have to call it that. Additionally since stealing from government war funds is clearly a booming business other Oligarchics want in on the action too. Thirdly Putin does not want new power centers forming so he needs to keep all of them equally drained of strength by throwing them into Ukraine. If he leaves them alone that raises the dangerous possibility that the balance of power could shift and a coup could happen. Its a everyone in the same sinking boat strategy, which works until it suddenly doesn't.

You also have to factor in that an outfit like GazProm knows that if Russia loses in Ukraine they (GazProm) are at the mercy of the Ukrainians for delivery.
