- In this video I demonstrate how to easily create a list of all the files in a folder including all files in its subfolders. I use Power Query to create this list. If you are using Excel 2010 or 2013 you will need to download and install the Power Query add-in from Microsoft's website www.microsoft.com/en-gb/downl...

Literally, the data of more than 100 folders, gave results in above 37 THOUSAND rows, in just less than a minute. You rock on Sir !!!
Been looking for a way to do this and this is WAY easier and more useful than the CMD option I kept on seeing. Thanks so much!!! Need to give this 2 thumbs up, or more!
Same here! Thank you and Happy new Year! 🥰
I would call it a BOSS video sir, I have been writing macros and doing lengthy and time taken steps to get the list of sub folders. This video shorten my time from several hours to only a minute or two!!!

Best tutorial i've seen in a long time, clear and precise, thank you very much. At the risk of sounding greedy, is there anyway I can display the file size in mb or gb?

This is just plain AWESOME! Would you know of a way to create an index of folders in DropBox? Besides manually creating it.
thanks too much for your effort :)
Thank you
This is excellent! I have one question, is it possible to attach a hyperlink to these files and folders?
excellent
thank you, it's very usefull
Excellent. Thanks
This is great. If I add a text column for the purpose of adding tags, do you think this would work?
I've been looking around for a solution to the limitations of the Windows limited tagging system as you can't tag all files.
You beautiful genius where have you been all my life. Sh*t this is very helpful. Thanks man ( I mean Much obliged in a cowboy voice) from Phoenix, Arizona 2024_5-24.
Hi Chester ! Thanks for this incredibly useful tool. I would like to add a column for comments by each file, however when I've done this and then refreshed the list, the comments stay in the same cells I originally entered in the values, and the dynamic range obviously moves and the comments to files become misaligned. Is there any way to do this so that the comments stay relative to the files I originally referred to please?
Great tutorial! Quick question: I tried using this option for multiple folders and subfolders (more than 1000) and it doesn't seem to work. Is there a size limit? What is an alternative option?
Thank you.
Is there any way that the folder name/path can be changed whenever needed? Like a drop down box or data entry cell to introduce other folder's name/path ( of course one folder at a time?)
thanks so much
You're welcome!
@@ChesterTugwell Great tutorial, Chester! It was very clear and helpful. I successfully retrieved the list of files and their sizes into Excel. However, I'm also looking to get the Comments and Tags. Could you please provide some guidance on how to achieve this? Thanks in advance!
well tanx
Thanks. I was searching for a way to get a file listing, and was pleasantly surprised to run into this one. Now, I need to sort the list by largest files at top so that I can determine which files are hogging my C drive. I get Drive full errors Thanks Again.
Thank you for this! Can you get just folders, not files within folders. I'm trying to create a directory and assign permissions based on position within the company. I don't need each file, just a list of the folders. Thanks!
Very fine, how we can add the file creator names in this method?, the name of the user who created this file ?
This is genius!!! It there any way to get the author of the file listed as well? I could not find the option for that anywhere.
Very useful.... Should we delete the col Binary?
Is it possible to display the file name into the file path too? So I can just copy and paste the entire path of the file, with the file included?
I don't see an 'From folder' option under 'Get Data' in Excel for Mac, nor am I able to add a folder to the 'Connections', what should I do?
Is this possible to do on numbers? I am trying on a Mac with excel but there is no Get Data from file voice.
Hi Chester
When I tried this I got the following message and not sure how to overcome it. Can you advise?
Many thanks
David
'... files are longer than the system defined maximum length'
I have folders of music & sound effects and would like to display the column "length" but that folder option doesn't appear as an option in the attributes column. Any ideas how to add that? Or other options like "genre" and "contributing artists"?
Will this work for mp3 files also? And all of the metadata embedded in the file?
but in mac , i dont find this options.. can u help?
The parent folder itself is not being added to the query list. How can you do that ?
Is there a macro where it links the files?
When I do the steps shown, I can't go to a folder which is on another network. How do I select folder from another network.
How can I get Descriptions to be included in a column
I've been trying to do this all day, but I can't get it to pull more than the first 100 rows, and it only has data in the first 33 rows.
i want the exact opposite of same thing you did
Anyone can help me please?
How does this work when you're dealing with thousands of lines of data? Does it handle projects well with hundreds of folders and possibly tens of thousands of files? Guess I should just test it.
Thank you
