This is what i was going to say. Racoon dog. I give scraps to the raccoons in my backyard at night, they're fairly tame, intelligent and interesting... I'm less familiar with Racoon dogs, i don't have them here. Otherwise i would befriend them as well.
just take the racoon inside and tell it. it is the new house pet here is your food and water !!! either it will live with you or run away as soon as the door is open !!! but it looks very timid !! and yes they make great pets !!! and they can learn to use kitty litter !!! I owned 3 in my life time and all were wild ones !!!

I agree. Behaviors, colors, markings, shapes, and other traits are vastly different between the two. In fact, the tanuki is called the “raccoon DOG” for a reason because it’s actually canine, unlike the American raccoon with their hands and grey and black stipes.

They do look very similar but Racoons have striped and longer tails while Tanuki is more chubby and fat shorter tail without stripes compared to Racoon. They are totally different species.

Is this a racoon or racoon dog (Tanuki) ? it seems more Tanuki than a racoon. It's very cute anyway. But if it's Tanuki it will not make a good house pet as they won't learn to use litter box. You can keep it around as a garden buddy though.
It's not a raccoon, it's a Tanuki! They are good luck. But wild animals should stay in the wild. It's already very timid and stressed out, and introduction to a bunch of other animals will stress it out even more. Tanuki can also have rabies, so you need to be careful.

That's not a raccoon. It's a tanuki - a Japanese wild dog that resembles a raccoon.
