Boomerang Great International Show Jumping Horse (Irish Sport Horse)
Hero Loved Eddie and Boomerang. I was at Wembley and he was in the restaurant. I asked the waiter would he please ask him for his autograph. I'm thinking he's probably going to say no. The waiter comes back and says What is your name goes back to Eddie gets my autograph with my name and wishing me the best Eddie Mackem. My hero didn't dissapoint. What an era it was
I remember him very well, and there will never be another like him, a truly extraordinary horse
Thank you. Eddie and Boomerang for the many hours of pleasure you gave us. There will never be another Boomerang he is sadly missed
Thanks for posting this. I have seen the Ballad of the Irish horse, but it was years and years ago. I will never forget this clip. Boomerang was so special.
I loved this Documentary "Ballad of the Irish Horse" Watched it OVER and over again.
Wonderful Eddie macken and unforgettable boomerang,
@KILLUCAN i used to watch him on the telly when i was a kid! i still got a lump in my throat. What an inspiration, what a horse!
Fantastic footage of what was truly the greatest partnership in world showjumping, Thanks.
Boomerang was a wizard horse
Great to watch
Boomerang was by a Thoroughbred stallion called Battleburn xx. Yes I know the Dam (mother) is very important in Breeding a top Jumper but I believe Boomerang "threw back" to a Great sire in his fathers side "GAINSBOROUGH" CHAMPION SIRE grandson of BAY RONALD (Battlebun's great great grandfather) for his athletic ability. Also in Battleburn's blood are the Great Flat Thoroughbred sires: ST SIMON (5 times in Battleburn!!) and BEND OR - ST SIMON was a "Champion Sire" and "Champion Broodmare Sire"
What age was boomerang when he died i grew up wathchen them when i was a child what a combination
Boomerang was seventeen when he was put to sleep.
Did he have another horse, Kerrygold? Or was that someone else?
cloverfield911 Kerrygold was the horse "Pele"'s sponsor name. Real name "Pele" & Paul Darragh won the 1975 Hickstead Derby on him. Pele & Macken came 2nd (Silver medal) in the 1974 World Championships also at Hickstead, so Pele most have liked Hickstead. Also Eddie Macken & Kerrygold claimed the silver medal at the 1977 European Championships in Vienna.
I think Iris Kellet owned Pele (Kerrygold). Also Pele was by a thoroughbred sire called Go Tobann, who also sired other top horses. Pele most have been out of an Irish Draught mare or part Irish Draught mare.
My late father, John Flynn, was Eddie's godfather, so that makes he and I, godsibs.
See Boomerang's sires pedigree in Allbreed (dot) com and go back through Battleburn's sires to see the photos of the Great sires i.e. HAMPTON (1872) and GALOPIN (1872) "BOTH OVER AT THE KNEE" -Boomerang was over at the knee !
Irish Sport Horse stallion owners should be standing sons or grandsons or great grandsons of the CHAMPION SIRE ""Sadlers Wells (Northern Dancer)"" - the National Hunt (Jump racing - steeplechasers) men have/or had: Oscar (Sadlers Wells), Kings Theatre (dead) (by S.Wells)
- his pedal bone (in hoof) dropped so he was retired. But 3 years later he became cronic lame, he was put to sleep.
Milan (Sadlers Wells) etc etc all great sires of top jump winners. The Flat men have GALILEO (by Sadlers Wells out of URBAN SEA the Dam of SEA THE STARS) - maybe the stallion men should be looking for a nice son or grandson (in the future) of GALILEO ?? Remember GALILEO is sire of the "freak" Frankel (dam by Danehill!)
Irish Sport Horse stallion owners will have to think quickly to make better the best (CHAMPION) Thoroughbred blood available to Sport Horse breeders before it's too late!!
