I wonder if it was not built backwards but when Chad put the eyes back in, he put the hour eye in the minute side. The eyes probably grab onto different portions of the shaft on the clock mechanism. E.G. Where the hour would grab onto the outside shaft and the minute grab onto the inside shaft.
