The fact I’ve heard this considered “album filler” is beyond comprehension. This is one of my fav songs, off one of my fav albums, in progressive metal history. Which is my fav genre.

I think he's one of the most talented musicians of all time, regardless of music genre or period of time. He's really underappreciated, sadly. I think you could put him against any musicians that are famously considered to be top 10 greatest of all time and he'd be better than all of them.... combined.
This is probably the most underrated song on the record....the crazy thing is that for 99.9999% of bands a song this good this majestic where every second is essential it would be their magnum opus....to early 2000s Opeth this is their idea of filler

I just discovered Opeth, and the quality of song writing over their discography is astounding. This song is one of the most straight forward off of BWP. But the harmonious outro takes this song to another level. Also love how their songs get better with numerous listens.
A couple of those tunes I am not familiar with yet. I will be sure to check them out. Just recieved BP legacy edition CD in the mail. Also love the outro from Dirge For November. Not much filler from Opeth. Ghost Reveries will be my next purchase.

Nowadays anybody anywhere can publish their own music online, we are spoiled with choice in the age of internet. back then publishing music was more expensive so worst of the worst music was filtered out, but that does not mean new music is worse than old music, in fact its better than ever. People who don't explore will only find copy of whatever became a hit so they say creativity is dead but they only play whatever is given to them by the algorithm. if you go looking in various forums and subreddits you will find great music. people who say old music is better are just a victim of survivor bias.

I was just about to write the same thing! My second favorite riff on the album (only second to the ridiculous riff from 2:14-2:41 in The Leper Affinity).
I mean, that riff is pretty sweet too (and transitions into the 2:01 riff beautifully). This album contains such an incredible wealth of awesome riffs! Rock on!
The way the guitar and the percussion are at odds with each other yet completely interconnected until the chorus or whatever song structure it is when they start syncing together is really cool, gives me gentle giant vibes for some reason
The rhythm guitar section that kicks in at 4:28 is one of the most hauntingly beautiful thing ever created. Not to mention the solo itself is so ethereal
I may be nuts, but that whole section, particularly when the buildup just takes off at approximately 4:59….I’ve always had the mental image of horses galloping across an open field, as fast as the wind. Sounds corny as hell, I’m sure…But every time I hear that section, that’s where my head goes.
The line, "Locked on the pinnacle" is so amazingly delivered, it's one of my favorite moments of Opeth and possibly my favorite moment in music as a whole
I mean this might have the best collection of riffs in any metal track ever. How this is a lesser considered or appreciated tune on this album is beyond me
I went for a run this morning and listened to to whole album, yes it does have a little of everything. Very good and enjoyable, some of the music reminded me of Jethro tull and they seem to have a little Spanish influence too. An all round talented team. Thanks for the suggestion!
The scream on "by the window" is still to this days one of the highest vocal moments from Mikael and one that never fails to get a metal face reaction from me. Pure gold
Its one thing to feel a song, and another to be immersed, aand they know just how to do that. For me, i can see the music, imagine the settings feel the emotions, i become immersed. The day i lose that ability will be my dirge.
3:41 "Fear me when we meet" makes me obsessed with this song I mean I truly love the entire song, but these particular 5 seconds are literally stuck in my mind, i can't imagine that a human being can produce these sounds, it sounds like a fucking demon and I love it !
"The Funeral Portrait" is quite an amazing and mighty song! Can't stop headbanging to it. Such great drums, guitar, vocals and lyrics. A real masterpiece. Besides the amazing intro riff, I'd highlight the following sections: 1:14 - I can't resist the vicious headbanging; 1:59 - Powerful section; 3:00 - How great is that? 3:51 - Precious interlude; 4:06 - Just amazing; 4:28 - A moment of pure joy with this guitar solo; 4:58 - Impossible not love this. Extremely intense; 5:12 - Great progression; 5:28 - Nice reprise of the main riff; 6:20 - One of the most beautiful sections in Opeth's history begins; 6:33 - Divine interlude. Outstanding bassline; 6:48 - Remarkable lyrics; 7:17 - Precious! Reminds me of the beginning of a sunset; 7:32 - Absolutely gorgeous kind of symphonic electric guitar solo outro riff.

I´ve always though about this song as if it was writted for the Ghost Reveries album. It has a Baying Of The Hounds or The Grand Conjuration vibe to it.

There's no filler on this album. Blackwater Park is a complete prog metal masterpiece start to finish.
