I’m a natural born Viennese man. You can’t make me more proud. The name of the sausages was an invention of a butcher from Frankfurt and via some weird twisted history the result is that Germans also call them Vienna sausages today, while we in Vienna here call them Frankfurter. No joke. I appreciate your Videos.

Built my first one today. Just as simple and effective as you said. I built mine for home use if the power goes out, so I will have a way to boil water for coffee or meals. I put my stove in an empty canned chicken can and filled around the inside of the chicken can with pea gravel for extra stability, since the original stove is more tall than wide. Also gives even more insulation. A new one-quart paint can from the big box hardware store snuffs it out. Indoors I will use Everclear if I also want to heat a room while cooking. On the porch it's denatured alcohol or yellow-bottle HEET. Thanks!

Great video ,good to know how to make a simple stove without all of the hassle and expense involved that I have seen on other sites and I have used your penny stove for a demonstration to show my grandkids how to make one and how it works and what you can do with it. Grandkids are in their early twenties and they are amazed at what they can do with simple things and not relying on Amazon or the internet. Grandpa was a Eagle Scout and I was in the military so survival was pounded into my brain from the beginning. Love your videos. Keep up the good work !!👍

I'm thinking (as a builder myself) that if you used a lid from a larger can, you could scribe around the base of the paste can and cut out your marked center, then drill small holes all around the big hole. This you would put down over it to go down atop the vienna can, cutting off some air, lowering the heat. Less holes, less heat. You could make several with different amount of holes all the way down until it won't stay lit, and there's your limit for simmering.
    Should save fuel as well.
Another idea would be to twist some copper wires, and wrap/shape it to fit around the paste can, with the ends turned out and twisted around each other to form a handle. You would just use more wire for less heat, as you're just limiting oxygen supply to the wick. It would get too hot to touch, so if you left one strand much longer than the others, it could circle the handle like an open spring (like the old wood stove handles) and be cool to touch. Or bore out a stick end, and push it on the handle, staying a bit back from the wick.

I love it! Mine burns about 28 minutes on 4 ounces. Last time I had it out I made a Velveeta Skillet. Fried the burger, then cooked the pasta for 10 minutes. It ran out just as I was stirring in the cheese. Worked great and I like that it doesn’t soot up the pans like a wood fire.

Very good video, an easy way to make version of "Fancy Feast" stove, with cheap materials.
BTW - In my "corner of the world" materials like carbon fiber and similar is expensive and difficult to get, so I try alternatives materials for wick, like cotton, jeans, steel wool (works OK but degrade fast)... ending using a "capillarity wick".
A "sandwich" of beverage can aluminum sheets: one flat + one with vertical "grooves" + one flat, whit the same height of the external can, this create sufficient pressure for keep two tomato paste (here cats eat Fancy Feast from plastic sachet) cans - of different sizes; together and the capillarity between the sheets vaporize alcohol well. Bonus: is easy recovery some leftover of fuel.

    • @jakeaurod
      @jakeaurod Год назад

I had the same idea of using aluminum soda cans to make a capillary wick, but I hadn't built it yet. I was also thinking of using a skinny mini soda can (7.5 oz) in place of the tomato paste can for an all aluminum build that won't rust.

    LoL
I literally just did this last night and then I see this video:)
I had an empty tomato paste can and a small tuna can sitting on the edge of my sink for the past year
(I made a super large version using a large can of beans and a soup can and I wanted a smaller version that doesn't suck up a huge amount of alcohol to just get it started)
and I finally got around to buying more felt so I decided to put the smaller stove together and didn't trust myself to trim the tomato paste can even enough for me to trust to balance a pot of boiling water, so I dug through my cupboard and decided that the Vienna sausage can was pretty close (I was looking for a one and a quarter inch extension).
Yes, I verified that I should have put a saucer over the bowl of Vienna sausages when I microwaved it.
Another thought I had was that if I was going to try cooking something that took longer than I planned, if I had a second stove, I could just light it up and switch over without having to wait for the first stove to cool enough to refuel.
Bonus: it looks like 2 of the Vienna sausage can stoves will fit inside my larger one.

    • @NulodPBall
      @NulodPBall 2 года назад +1

      Side note:
The wicking material tends to shrink a little so I trimmed the felt fabric a little long, then tried to jam as much as I could into the outer can and trimmed that just a touch long.
I found 1/4" carbon fiber blanket so it was a bit of a struggle to get everything to fit but it does... and lights up quite nicely.
You can run without the wick, but the flame seems to be weaker and goes out easier.
Of course, paper towels work, just replace them when you need to :)
If I had cotton or jute twine I'd probably use that before paper though.
I used the larger stove to burn off the liner on the tomato paste can >> OUTSIDE

Glad to see this: was thinking of doing something this way. Yeah, vienna stove sounds A LOT better than weeny stove! [insert smily face here]. AND, thank you, you answered my question about wick material. This matches what I would have thought. People use fiberglass and more exotic materials - some of which I wonder about when they are lit! The natural materials match what I have found when making things like tablets, fiber/tin stoves, buddy burners, etc., with wax. Basically if it burns or smolders... Here, I like what you're doing - if it wicks and is not toxic, it works! Thanks for no B.S.!

And i already do have an oil lantern heater that i made from 2 cake tins and a small sheet of 1mm thick mild steel that the lantern sits inside and it heats the top cake tin up great, i had my main room at 20 degree's C last night though it is not very cold here in bonnie Scotland yet but i sure am glad i came across this channel, i enjoy watching and making what i can myself so these vids are great for everyone as i think that we are all going to be left in the dark when folks need the heating or go very cold.
If you have mobility or issues with dexterity you can just use a very clean paint tin filled with fire blanket and pour the alcohol in and go from there. But be sure to use all of the safety tips shown and used right here in this video. 👍

What brand and model is the pot with the indentation in the bottom? Also, can you make a video testing the various other fuels? I'm especially interested to see how it does with diesel or lamp oil.

    1. Is there a dead spot in the middle of the stove?
    2. For years I have used a tuna can with some pink insulation in it, but I need a pot stand, obviously.
    Great video

Those alcohol stoves that you have that are made of aluminum pop cans and beer cans are very hard to get started. You almost have to heat the bottom of to get it boiling. I find that when I made mine, I always poured a bit of fuel on the ground under and around it to get it hot on the bottom and then I didn't have any problem getting it started.
But you're Vienna alcohol stove is state of the art.
I'm going to use carbon fiber when I build mine. With a sheet of carbon fiber, I can get a lot of cuts out of a 12"x12" square of carbon fiber. I find it's not that expensive, and at 12x12 sheet goes a long way and making several Vienna alcohol stoves.
They hold more fuel and burn longer, and that's a plus when I'm frying bacon or spuds.
    Thanks for sharing this video?.

I tried this. Jeez, it's the easiest thing to make, I used blue paper hand towels from the works toilets for a wick and it works like a dream, great vid man.

Neat twist on fancy feast stove. I agree also use paper towels 4 a wick.
IMO Mr. Hiram made a mistake by not commercially making his idea, someone else did thou.

Great video. Actually for an even simpler build I wondered why you bothered to cut the bottom off the smaller can at all and didn’t just punch holes in the bottom/sides to let the fuel out to the wick. As you say, makes it easier to build out in the field with limited tools.

Thank you so much for sharing your invaluable expertise. I am using candles to heat up water & it takes 20 minutes. I have a big bottle of 91% alcohol & was thinking about an alcohol stove. I was refilling the Fancy Heat cans but had one explode when I lit it & shoot the lit 🔥 wick through my tarp shelter. Just learned there's a recall & not available anymore. This is going to be easy & perfect for my needs.

Great burning stove... simple design. No push pin holes. You can actually cook whats in the can, after you empty them out,, just add a little pasta and garlic your good to go! Provecho.
