I decided that my PCs choosing who to be friends with already was a bad idea as well, so i actually had them exchange conversations in the tavern with whoever one of the 7 npcs catches their eye on their own. It ended up with half an hour of pure roleplaying and a natural build of report

I am running this campaign starting tomorrow - it'll be my first DnD campaign as a DM, (reference, the original ADnD were when I played last) - so I'm a bit nervous with all this lore! Great video series to help on this end. I never thought about the characters not taking the deed! The political intrigue with the factions is something I'm a bit nervous about too!

    Very Cool Series.
To mix things up running this a second time, I removed the arrow slits and just had the 2 goblin guards sleeping in the circle area. Made the stealth DC higher since they're in an open area and could hear better.

For the deed to troll skull, I would tell the players that they need to hold onto it for collateral until they can come up with the money and then just have him take forever to do it.

I'm debating running this as an Acquisitions Inc campaign, which solves a few problems in Chapter 1. Namely, the party is at the Yawning Portal to meet their new Majordomo and pick up the deed to their new HQ from Volo. Unfortunately, Floom was in possession of the deed, which is their hook to go looking. It can also help out with the massive haul of optional loot in the warehouse, as the image of party members dragging four valuable paintings with them through the sewers is a bit of a funny image. They can have the Majordomo secure the loot while they go into the sewers and do their hero-type stuff.
I'm not sure on how exactly this will play into the faction mechanics, but I imagine Aq Inc recognizes the need for external resources for information and aid.

What would you think if I leveled up the party to level four just so that when they faced the mind flayer, they would be able to kill it? It just seems really contrived to just have it run away when it might be a little hungry.

certain elements of this adventure, and city adventures overall, get thrown away at higher level play. once PCs hit 5th level, there is a whole bunch of spells which completely invalidate certain encounters and scenarios. you can certainly run this adventure at a higher level, but just know that the higher the level, the more spells get involved that change how the game is played!
