250. A new canal? That'll be £100 million, please

- Built in the late 1700s but abandoned in the mid-20th century, the Stroudwater Navigation and the Thames & Severn Canal are currently undergoing a mammoth, volunteer-led programme of restoration. This is their story.
For those curious about the video title, a Trow was the type of boat that used to sail up the River Severn and along the Stroudwater Navigation to unload at Stroud, so the title is a gentle play on the phrase "True Believers" and references the dedication of all the volunteers making this project happen.

You've really gotten very good at this. The quality of the photography, the scripting, pace, balance of information with entertainment value.
Your work exceeds the quality of many television documentaries I've seen.
And he works for cheese sandwiches
David, It's good to hear your voice wafting over the air ways and the canals again. Good Show!
With the growing interest in narrowboats and the canal system, NOW is a good time to keep this project rolling. Your 'bully pulpit' is a good place to help.
David your journalism is outstanding as always and I guarantee they're going to raise more money because of this documentary on the history and Canal restoration, from all of us here in Canada that watch you thank you😎👍👍
Thank you David. 250 vlogs! Let’s take a moment to applaud that!
👏
Having watched your recent non cruising episodes it must be obvious to all that you were the star reporter when you worked for TV.
An absolute joy to watch ... and subject not bad either 😁.
I was very much not the star at all, no-one had any appreciation for what I did not least because I was surrounded by far more talented colleagues (who were also under-appreciated by the Powers That Be)
@@CruisingTheCut Be that as it was David but for a lot of us you are very much the Star in our narrowboat vloggers' firmament.
A good way to raise money would be to sell paver bricks with people's names one them. You could raise money from around the world, and people could be a part of history.
That’s a popular method of fundraising here in the United States.
My local Foodbank did this to raise funds for a new building.
@@miked1765 everywhere
@@frofrofrofro900 you can say that for sure? You personally been all over the world and seen or been part of this style of fundraising? Because see @Mike D can only speak for what he knows and seen. Most likely @Mike D has only seen it being done in the United States so that is what he spoke off.
I wish they would do that. I think a lot of subscribers would donate.
Part of me misses your cruising videos, but when we receive such in depth documentaries as this, who would dare to complain? This is a daunting and complex venture, and it really does give an added appreciation for all of those wonderful volunteers!
Quality journalism. Reminds me of the good old days when TV wasn't all just dramatic re-enactments of kitchen mishaps.
Not a video... But a complete documentary, worthy of any TV station.. Excellent.
(Boat owner from Ireland)
Thank you
To think that some of the volunteers will never see the canal complete in their life times, yet still put that time and effort into the project, makes me realise, that the civility of our nation is still very much intact despite all that has changed in the last 20 years or so. Thank you for your service to your local community’s and ultimately the nation as a whole.
Don't even live in England. The way the world is going, I'll never see it..
BUT I'm totally donating from across the pond cause this historic restoration needs to happen!!
As a retired camera jockey from the US I enjoy your videos and can comfortably
say that you and, anybody that helped, did an outstanding job. I also like the
way you folks seem to cherish your history as opposed to paving it over, the
way we do here.
Another great video that must have taken hours, days, even weeks to get it all organised and 'in the can' as it were. When it comes to interesting and educational videos David you are leading the field my friend.
This a fantastic piece of filming and editing. A joy to watch. This is what the BBC used to be for. A great example of how enthusiasm coupled with professional knowledge and talent can make an absolute mockery of conventional terrestrial tv.
Thank you. I would suggest the BBC has many documentaries of far higher standard than I can achieve.
@@CruisingTheCut I think you bring something unique that they don't have, you have the enthusiasts passion coupled with a deep understanding and sympathy for the subject. The corporatisation of life has pushed all the talented people out, but hopefully RUclips and other platforms might allow (a much more interesting) way back in.
@@CruisingTheCut you underestimate yourself, David. Much as I liked the old cruising vlogs, these documentaries are a whole step up. Very professional, but with a special personal touch that comes from your genuine interest in the subject and the fact that you are able to produce exactly what you want, and not have to consider the petty restrictions of commercial filmmakers/broadcasters. They should be watching these documentaries and asking themselves some serious questions - if he can produce programmes of such quality, singlehandedly and on a very limited budget, why can't we do something similar??
I'd just echo the other comments on here: this is a superb piece of film-making. What a gift to the project!
The production quality on this video is second to none
I volunteered on the Thames and Severn restoration a couple of years ago for a week. Best "holiday" I've had in my life, properly good fun
BBC used to be this good.
Fascinating and excellent work. Thank you David.
I’m an American, and I think this is a wonderful idea! All we build is extra lanes on freeways.
The quality of the editing, narrative, photography, soundtrack etc. on this video is absolutely incredible. This is easily as good as anything you would see on the BBC - in fact it's much better, because the BBC would have to condense it down to three minutes. And all this was done by one man on his own, on a laptop, on a narrow boat! Absolutely incredible. My sincerest and warmest compliments. The pride you take in your work is recognised and appreciated.
Thank you
On solar power
Absolutely agree, a brilliant piece of video-making.
When I added my reply, above, I had not read your message... I totally agree with you.
I find that it’s in pieces like this, that your experience in the media industry shines through. The production and narration are exceptional, you forget you’re watching a RUclips channel.
His former work at ITV really makes the production quality shine in his corner of RUclips World. This is one of his best documentaries, cut nicely from start to finish with great narration and interesting guests. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
i used to watch the excellent “cruising the cut “ and keep dropping back onto vlogs like this as they reappear ,the filming and narration makes it so watchable and informative David is such a competent presenter and so professional its an absolute delight just to sit back and take it all in .
David is still making new videos much like this one 🤣
Great to see the vids starting again. A Calming effect spills over me when I watch and dream of being on the water!! Thanks
Cheers (but they haven't stopped since April... 😂)
This whole video is so professionally presented. Could be a long story on BBC news. Top job
Who needs mainstream tv when you’ve got videos like this. Really fascinating, and another good advert for progress being made via quiet volunteering, so rarely makes the news.
“Stuck with the wife.....” Ha! dead man walking! I really enjoyed this episode. Thankyou. I hope it gets done quickly.
It's nice to see people so motivated to restore a historical artifact stretches for miles.
Great production value and the perfect example of how useful drone shots can be . I hope people appreciate how much effort you put in !
Fantastic film David, thank you. I live in Stroud and have watched this happen over the last 25 years - slowly at first but with increasing pace and it's inspiring to see.
When Stroud District Council bought the derelict Ebley Mill in the early 90s there was uproar in many quarters at the cost of restoration, but the council argued that it would kick-start the regeneration of the area (Ebley and Cainscross) and they've been proved right and in spades. This is what regenerative town planning looks like and the Council deserve praise for their vision. Add to that the incredible work done by the Trust on a ridiculously small budget and you have a project that's a joy to watch as it progresses.
I loved that gorgeous new Brick built bridge, it looked superb and totally in the vernacular architecture of the original canal. Lovely work. It would have been so easy to go for a cheap concrete prefabricated bridge but instead they did a proper job. 🛥👋
Once again David an excellent vlogmentary. I found the history so interesting
This must be in the top 5 you have ever done. This is nothing less than fantastic. At some point the missing link of London to Scotland will be built. Thank you.
As always David a quality vlog and on a great subject. A very deserving group that are clearly working hard to achieve a long term project, hopefully it will help with publicity and volunteers
You must have spent a lot of time and effort to put this video together. Thank you. Great promotion to help the project.
Simply wonderful. Well done to all the volunteers ❤️
Once this is complete, it will create a canal grand circular from London to Reading, Oxford, Lechlade, thence to Cirencester, Stroud, Gloucester, Worcester, Brum, Warwick, Braunston, MK, Watford and back to London, I reckon three or four weeks of solid cruising.
Oh yes, definitely.
donated today from Kansas, usa, land of Zero canals from my very tiny wallet.
Thank you so much for sharing your mini documentaries on the variety of subjects connected with the canals. You provide us with important historical and contemporary stories. Thank you ♥️
Other RUclipsrs should watch this to see what a quality RUclips video should look and sound like
Primetime TV producers should watch this, for the same reason.
Once again David…excellent…well done. I can quite understand how excited Americans must get when they come across old infrastructure that is about as old or sometimes even older than their country..
Assume you mean the European settlers who wiped out the real owners of the country.
Love your style. Brilliant. And so good to hear that there are many people in the UK that appreciate our heritage.
Before we lose it. Forever.
Congratulations on 250 episodes, always great content.
This piece shows the heritage of your previous career. This is the quality of a regional TV report. Fab 😎. Great work.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you David, what a fantastic video showing the great lengths the CRT, is able to take , in order to connect abandoned sections of canal with privately funded resources 👍😁👍
What a fantastic video I felt like I was watching a PBS special. Your timing and editing skills are stellar. Thank you so much for creating such entertaining content. (Tacoma, Washington USA)
I really appreciate this path you've set your channel on. It's extremely enlightening. Thank you.
A "tow path" if you will.
You know I missed the old Cruising the cut videos but, these stories on the past canals and people living on the canal are very well produced and your narrations are spot on, and the video work first class. Keep them coming, David.
Brilliant video David, easily good enough to be on a major TV channel. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
Another fantastic video filled with canal history and current development plans. I am so pleased to see how the public seems to embrace the cultural heritage which the canals offer.
Magnificent! Good on you Brits for preserving heritage while the US is in historical meltdown. #BucketList #CanalTour
Thank you for another superb video David - and what a tremendously inspiring group of people. What amazing things we can all do when we put our minds to it - wonderful stuff 😊
Will be an amazing achievement getting this back in action. Excellent work David. So professionally put together, interesting, watchable and easy to digest.
The real heroes of the British canals is the Irish labor that dug them by hand.
The Irish dug the canals in the U.S. too.
And built most of our railways here in the UK as well - the efforts of the Navvies must never be forgotten for the work they've done for our modern infrastructure!
This is wonderful. Investing back into our heritage and our future at the same time. I'm sure this will bring much tourism to the area. My mate [who lives on a narrow boat] works for a company in Sowerby Bridge that rents out narrowboats to holidaymakers. I'm sure the same will happen here too.
David of all of your many excellent videos, this explains much about the struggle to maintain ones heritage..
This is fantastic to increase the waterways by any size is always a good thing, thank you for this and please keep them coming.
Hello and welcome to 17mins of entertainment that is just... top drawer. Love your content & always look forward to these videos!
Thanks 👍
That is some project,, I'm all for it too. It will make England so much more beautiful...
Fantastic David !! Your really showing your professional experience in these type of films. I miss you CC'ing vlogs but with projects like this and the endless environmental content of our news today I think the inland waterways will become ever more relevant albeit 240 years later. More please. Life is one big circle !!
Its beautiful to see the unsung heroes like the maintenance guys and shop workers showcased. The overall project is mammoth and deserves some recognition
You go the extra mile and it shows. A well researched and perfectly executed piece of work to make this stream. You should be proud of this podcast.
A marvelous piece of work! I'm speaking of the entire UK canal system and this video. You are simply fantastic at this sort of documentary video making. It's always a pleasure to watch!
Wow, thank you!
I REALLY LOVE HOW SO MANY DIFFERENT PEOPLE AND ORGANIZATIONS COME TOGETHER TO MAINTAIN AND REBUILD THE CANAL SYSTEMS. THEY ARE SO MUCH A WORK OF LOVE FOR THE CANALS AND THEIR HISTORY.
David, I have enjoyed your vlogs for quite a while, but these documentary videos you are now making are truly outstanding! I always find them to be informative and entertaining. Well done sir!
My wife and I are two people who will never be able to personally experience the cut mainly due to space, time, and funds. So why do we love your productions so much? A far cry from our Alabama water systems. Light years of difference in the social, historic, and well, all that stuff. Just tell me why I never see a glass of iced tea. Is it because Americans drink the stuff by the gallon (That is x liters to you.) and Brits want to be different? You can put that stuff in a microwave you know. Do it all the time. Get a thirst on for hot tea with milk in it watching your shows.
Carry on, cheeri-o, what, and ruther David. It is an absolute delight to see nice people like the shop lady at the end. You do good. Really. We're watching you David.
Iced tea is just not a thing here. We like our tea boiling hot.
I'd love to see that 'LEGO' bridge being assembled.
I hope they will time lapse it when it happens
I grew up in Stroud, this video makes me happy
😀
Hi David, very professional anyone would think you worked for the TV Network 👍. Thoroughly enjoyed it and I will visit there in the near future and a big thank you for that . Hope you have more vlogs similar. Well done 👍
David, your roots are showing..
Well done lad. It's not about you, it's the people you let tell their stories, but you get to bring their content forward. Very happy for you. Nice work.
Thank you for another thoughtful and educational episode. Cooperation and enthusiasm for a common goal, wonderful. Ex-pat American living in Vietnam is impressed. Sadly, no cheese available for the sandwich. Ha ha
I am in Thailand, I can get cheese here sometimes. Thai's don't seem to like cheese much.
1,000,000 people chuck in 100 pounds each? I live in Australia and I get so much enjoyment from RUclips clips on the canals, put me down for a 100 British pounds!
I'm deadly serious. Just watched the video (which is really good, so thank you) to the end and noted the link. I'm putting my money where my typing is. Cheers
Done. £104.50 including Virgin Money's cut
They will be delighted!
Great video. Based on my door step. I live near Stroud. I remember going to view a new potential office in Cirencester. It was very old and apparently served as a bank for canal users. There is a popular pub called the The Tunnel House which sits next to the entrance/exit of The Sapperton Canal. At the other end there is another Public house called The Daneway (present day name). Which was constructed in 1784 by a canal contractor which was used for accommodation for the builders. It was then sold to become the Brickkayers Arms. The Sapperton Tunnel with a length of 3,817 yards was the longest canal tunnel from 1789 to 1811. The facade of the entrances are ornate and still intact to this day. Probably worth an episode pload in its own right. 👍
Another interesting video for those of us who live in different countries. I'm from the US and find this incredibly interesting.
Broadcast quality. Exceptional David, exceptional! 👌👏👏👍😀
I am really enjoying your more "documentary" type videos. I of course enjoyed the cruising videos but I am learning so much from you. Thank you again for the wonderful content. Your drone skills are really good. I love that footage. :)
It is amazing that something like this is considered a "restoration" and it is a huge undertaking. That is going to be an amazing route and re-addition.
Truly an excellent video! Thanks for helping the Cotswald Trust message out. I wish there was a similar opportunity to volunteer locally in North Carolina.
Excellent film and interviews. What a lot of hard work for the volunteers. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Brilliant introduction to a gigantic restoration that has overcome so much and has even more to conquer before they are done. I've watched it progress since 2006 when working in Stroud and I have every confidence that they will make it to Saul. Going East is on a different scale, not least because of Sapperton tunnel, but the people I have met do not understand the word 'impossible'.
I love your witty titles, and I normally get them, but this one goes over my head.
See video description
Thanks.
This makes Cruising The Cut, a cut way above the rest! 👍
Superb presentation.
Brilliant vlog.....as always, and having spoken to you yesterday (at Gayton) i now understand what you were saying about the complexities of producing this very interesting vlog, let's hope they get all the support they need, keep up the good work David 👍
How lucky are you?
Great video David. Very informative and a pleasure to watch.
Such a well done video, better than most documentaries on Netflix
David you are a very talented producer and presenter. 👍🇺🇸
Every time I watch you channel I wish the USA had this.
canals? here:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intracoastal_Waterway
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_canals_in_the_United_States#Transportation_canals_in_operation
@@vasopel While those are canals, I'm assuming the person you're responding to meant *narrowboat* canals.
Pennsylvania used to have an extensive canal system but the railroad killed it.
The ICW is a full on commercial shipping lane. A bit like the Manchester Ship Canal in the UK. It isn't populated with little tea shops and quaint pubs. You can't in short moor up anytime you like and make a cup of tea.
This was an impressive piece, David. Job well done….VERY well done.
Informative and entertaining overview of the restoration protect. It really helped me understand how complex and difficult these restorations can be...and expensive!! Bravo to the hard work and dedication of the volunteers, thank you for highlighting them.
We love David!
(I really did miss your hand drawn maps though **wink wink**)
Haha I prefer to do nicer maps on these doco videos
Here in New Jersey there were a couple of canals which have over the years been abandoned. I live in one of the towns where the Morris Canal went through the very center of the town. I have examined old documents about the canal. Most of the land grant of the canal has been returned to municipalities and individual property owners. New Jersey is the most densely populated state. The original canal can never be restored. However, I would be interested in restoring the section through my municipal town. I believe that businesses like pubs and restaurants would spring up around the canal. Restoring a small portion of the canal seems possible. I was very interested in your "A new canal?"
It's awesome to see what a volunteer organization can take on and accomplish.
Thank you, David! This one is 17 1/2 minutes of pure happiness for both the transatlantic virtual gongoozler and the old retired engineer that lurk the dark recesses of my mind!
How nice to see restful green vegetation, as opposed to the dry brown California valley look. And you have so many buildings and artifacts that date back to before the beginning of the USA. Around here there is virtually no man made structure that predates ~1840s.
Well done David, The more publicity these canal trusts get the better,
I love your vlogs. It's like watching a professional documentary. Well done, again.
Superb video. One must admire the Herculean effort by the volunteers to restore the canal.
Thank you.
Excellent video covering thos fascinating canal restoration! I wish this group the best of success!
We live near the Chesterfield canal (Worksop) and we have a large section, 9 miles, which is missing! A housing estate was built on the land the canal travelled through and the Norwood tunnel collapsed. The canal then starts and is in use from the tunnel to the River Trent. Work is slow but I believe they are getting more funding towards the rebuild. They are looking at £2.1m.
David, your informative vlogs are so interesting. Very much enjoyed this one. More like this about the canals, please!
