Once upon a time in Ireland stood a castle proud and free
On the stormy coast of Antrim, high above the Irish Sea
Lords and ladies gathered nightly in the great hall of the king
Bread and meat and wine did flow, bards would play and poets sing
MacDonnell was a chieftain bold who dwelled at Dunluce with his clan
Safe from ships upon the ocean, and from raiders on the land
There he ruled for many years, for Ulster was his wide domain
Many tried to conquer him, and many men had died in vain
Dunluce Castle fell to no man
    Sword or pike or cannonball
    Roving clans, or Spanish foemen
    Dunluce stood against them all
When a fleet of Spanish raiders sailed across the raging main
Sure a victory was at hand and glory for the King of Spain
MacDonnell met them with full scorn, and loudly did the cannons roar
The pride of Spain was turned away and banished from the Irish shore
Dunluce Castle fell to no man
    Sword or pike or cannonball
    Roving clans, or Spanish foemen
    Dunluce stood against them all
Then one night a storm came in, and angry did the north wind blow
Walls of stone came crumbling down and fell into the sea below
Fate was cruel as many souls were lost against the raging might
Nature did what no man could on a dark and a stormy night
Dunluce Castle fell to no man
    Sword or pike or cannonball
    Roving clans, or Spanish foemen
    Dunluce stood against them all
Dunluce Castle fell to no man
    Sword or pike or cannonball
    Roving clans, or Spanish foemen
    Dunluce stood against them all

My playground as a youngster and few know of the amazing cave below. There was small well-hidden crawl-through entrance about halfway down the south side. The cave was large enough for boats to enter from the ocean side. There were legends that the Vikings sailed into the cave. I hear that the land entrance has been deliberately collapsed.

I was always told my Quillman family was German. So doing my genealogy and finding the name changed from Mc Quillin to Quillman along the way, and that I now am part Irish AND actually have a castle in the lineage, is just unbelievable. I loved the Irish Rovers song about the castle and am so proud of my irish heritage. My daughter has the red hair to go with it too! Thank you Irish Rovers, it's a pretty song.

@@cogniterra - I was surprised when my DNA came back strongly Nordic until I refined my research and found that the clan actually stems from a Norman mercenary who came to Ireland in 1175 when Strongbow tried to take the throne. Since Normans were directly descended from Rollo and the Vikings, it made sense. My younger son is named Rory, but I named him 26 years before I discovered that the last clan Chieftain was Rory McQuillen...genetic memory, maybe, but too far-fetched to be coincidence. First McQuillen to America, Teague McQuillen in 1635, was my mother's direct ancestor.

in reply to McDonaldGallowglass, did you know that the Lion on you coat of arms is there by a marriage to a Quillen. That red lion is the Quillen coat of arms. But since it tied to royalty the McDonalds put it in top position on their coat of arms. Not saying there is anything wrong with doing so I just think its a cool bit of history. So think Quillen when you see that lion, lol.

    • @keithquillen9482
      @keithquillen9482 7 лет назад +1

It was the McDonnell's. That is just another spelling of the same name. Just like my last name is Quillen and not Quillan, McQuillin or any of the other variations. The McDonnell's, with the help of another family, were the ones that killed most of the McQuillens and stole the castle, when no one else could.

  • @traks2042
    @traks2042 6 лет назад +1

The original family name of the clan is McConnell not McDonald it was changed by the prince who went into hiding form the English as he was captured many times but kept escaping so in the end they gave the prince a piece of land (dunluce castle) to stop him and he accepted and built a clan there the McDonalds but he still committed against the English and a law was passed that a McDonald could be hung in the street without trial if captured and so he changed the name to mcconnell and that law is forgotten about but still stands
