I like how Bob was quick to steer the conversation away from Lars and onto James at the beginning- cuz he was being smart and knew James was a ticking time bomb at this timeline and would explode if he didn't include James in The Decision Making process. Bob doesn't get enough Credit- He kept Metallica in Check. It was what they needed in the Bob Rock Era.
Nah. It’s just that the dynamic between Bob and Lars is poles apart of that of Bob and James. Bob and Lars are always poking each other and putting each other down. It’s their schtick. With James, I don’t think he is/was as close to James, so you naturally have a more respectful approach cos you don’t have that familiarity. And Bob’s dynamic was different again with Kirk. He came across as Kirk’s wise uncle.
Kirk Hammett ladies and gentlemen. The true one who just dealt with what came at him! He was literally the only one that was fine and then his long time friends started getting on each other.
I think they needed Bob throughout this era, I don’t know if we would’ve had Metallica without him. I know a lot of people hate him because of the more ‘commercial’ albums he produced with them but Bob truly was the ‘rock’ throughout everything holding it all down and he just seems like a nice guy. It would be awesome to have him back for another album if he’s still doing stuff.
@@biga6664 I agree he managed to keep the band working together. regardless of the material they put out...Bob was the glue in terms of getting the album done and delivered.
@@sdsmt99 well I wasn't implying Lars a tool. That's your interpretation of what I've said. But Lars can be an arsehole and I like that Bob's not having it
Kudos to Bob Rock for his display of patience and diplomacy skills on this clip. He managed all the delicate situations so smoothly, gotta give him credit for that 👍
Bob Rock is really fucking good here. 1st, slapping down Lars after he says ' first tell us what we're listening too' Bob's like, err... no pal, you weren't even in the room when we started this process, I'll continue addressing James as I was before. Then to tell Lars to put some shoes on, then to literally carry on his train of thought in telling Lars about the error in the drum track. Can't pussyfoot around these rockstars or they won't respect you.
Bob had the measure of Lars from when they did the Black album. He respected (and probably feared) James - but Lars was treated to a combination of measured jibes and quiet disdain. Kirk got it the worst, though. Bob seemed to delight in undermining him in particular.
Does the point you're failing to make have anything to do with the comment Kirk made two months ago, Nov. 2019 about the "Tone Police" (James, Lars) always shooting down his ideas? He has very little say now...or 17/18 years ago.
Yeah I don't care how many album's they've sold, that's way too much involvement of a band with the mixing process. They're with the producer that gave them their biggest albums, fucking trust the dude to know to do the right shit.
lars was actually right at the end...the snare was technically not in time with the music that followed it, but its just part of the dynamic of a heavy song like that. if bob rock was a drummer hed understand. and yes, things like that do suck the life out of the music, thats why the live in studio recording they did sounded miles better than the actual final songs
Bob Rock had to walk on eggshells around James and tolerate Lars' diva attitude. No wonder why he didn't come back for Death Magnetic. It's freaking exhausting.
Why is everyone talking shit. If someone was criticizing what you're most passionate about how bob is you'd be that way too. Also if someone rolled a wheel over your foot you'd prolly react in anger too. They are human fucking beings. What were you all expecting?
No wonder they got rid of Bob Rock - the only guy that would sort of stand up to Lars' petulant mania - and replaced him with absentee, sonic ruiner Rubin and then paid employee Yes Men.
at 2:00 is pure raw sound of James Rig...it´s so juicy and chunky...what amp he plays through ?? I see the marshall DSL is ON and it for sure doesn´t sound like dry Diezel VH4... anybody knows ?
I hate the fact that Kirk never has a said on the process, always is Lars first who approve everything and James as the main guys who make the big decisions, what if let Kirk do everything for first time, maybe is a monster hiding behind the bed
They really get into detail about why it doesn’t sound right and what’s missing and how the left and right channels should be, but can’t anybody notice that song is just total garbage?
Think these guys are prima donnas? Ever heard of Guns 'N Roses? Do you think Dave Mustaine isn't hard to work with? He can't keep his band together because he's so head strong. This kind of stress, maybe over thinking and bickering comes from greatness and knowing exactly what they want and what they're capable of. There is no better rock band in the modern era than Metallica - in my opinion.
Hetfield openly admits here that he dislikes reverb, delay, and sustain. He’d rather have a flat sounding staccato riff that sounds likes its being played by dick fingers. It’s been that way since post-Black album. The whole St. Anger album is surrounded by staccato in a garbage can.
You can really feel the tension by watching this video. You can also see Bob treading very carefully not to upset James. It was a bad time in Metallica's Career and lives, however they are now stronger for it! :)
"You shouldn't put your foot under his wheel!" Kirk will always be my favorite member of Metallica
And then James' LOOOOVE
2:50 “Oooo that hurt worse than the toe”
Sometimes, Lars behaves like a superrich spoiled child.
This gets me every time, he sounds so serious but bc we cant see his face and it sounds so ridiculous we cant tell if its a joke or not LOL

hahah duude that one just caught a real LOL
hahaha one of the funniest thing's I've seen in a long time
Yes..lol

Grandmaster Jedi shit goin on there mate! xD
Kirk is always the calmest, chillest and wisest member of this band in every clip I've seen, lol.
yeah definitely smartest and controlled

Yeah, that was a ferocious outburst, I did not expect that.

I love how Bob Rock notices that the snare is off tempo, but he doesn’t notice that it sounds like an empty coffee can...lmao
LOL.. That's so true
Oh he knew. Lars wanted it that way.
Every nu metal band had drum production like this I don't understand why everybody complain
He was going for an aesthetic so it was meant to sound that way.
These were the days of the whole "garage revival" thing when it was cool to sound bad.
It is slightly....slow

is this a half-life reference?
Man you didn't hear the original presidio stuff this is like a Mozart symphony comparing to their initial tryouts
This has to be the best comment on youtube, hands down
bob rock gets hated on,but he knows what he's doing in that studio
The only people that hate on Bob Rock are the people who have no idea what they're talking about.
Yeah, He definitely does. Unfortunately he does not know what Thrash Metal means, so he leads it into a very wrong direction.
Well the end result was still a shit-sounding album.
2:47 lmao bob rock said that with an evil grin
'that hurt worse than the toe'
"Now can I show you the flaw in the drumming" Bob Rock was so lucky there were witnesses in that room, or else he'd be dead.
He just took advantage of the situation 😁
Me after 6 blunts - "It is... slightly............sLoW
hahahaha that's hilarious
"go on Bob, beat the life out of it, you have a lot of experience with that" OOHH now that's a fucking burn.
Pro Tools was invented to combat the tempo issues of Lars Ulrich
I love Lars, and i think he is great. But he had some serious attitude issues during st.anger.
He's stewing in his anger.
And wiping chip grease and sandwich on his couch.
Dont tell me what to focking do!
One could say some "anger"........issues
During his career lol
damn, you can feel the tension in the room :P
Guess you could say Lars was "caught under wheel's roll" !!!!
LOL!
He took the leech
Lol I see what you did there...well played sir
New song, dont ever do that again. By Lars and James, and only lars and james.
no joke james and lars are like 15 year olds in grownup bodies. bless bob and kirk for putting up with that shit
i love how kirk at the end is like ''yeah its alittle slow'' just to add to it
Lars is such a celebrity.
Can’t believe these are the same guys that put the Black Album together
I know right, garbage people and garbage music
Могу бесконечно пересматривать почти все видео Metallica, это шедевральная группа на все времена, как в принципе и все группы 80-х и 90-х
yeah dude for sure
kirk is totally stoned! listen to him right at the end when he says 'slow'
Bob puts lars in place..
Jesus. How did Bob Rock tolerate Lars is the main mystery here.
Bob had the measure of Lars from when they did the Black album. He respected (and probably feared) James - but Lars was treated to a combination of measured jibes and quiet disdain. Kirk got it the worst, though. Bob seemed to delight in undermining him in particular.

Love the way you come together on things cause I can always tell when James is happy 😊 its a rapp
Kirk - smoke weed, surf, play guitar
Love watching their process.
classic stuff. always good 2 re-watch

Every one of these videos I watch I am either laughing at the content or laughing at the comments. This is better than watching The Office.
Poor Kirk. After all these years lars and James still treat him like hired help.

Sucking the life out of something like St.Anger is the merciful thing to do. Thing should have been euthanized.
^ fuck off, st anger was an abomination of creative expression that had huge potential.
Lars “the guitars sound light”……(snare banging thung thung thung thung!!!!). Hilarious
St. Anger - The greatest Metallica album of them all.
Made me want to relisten to St. Anger, this is a killer riff.
2:37 :D Poor Lars :)
I am still baffled that Bob Rock produced The black album and then went and did this.
It should be like a band going in a garage for the first time and playing..... only the band is Metallica. - Bob Rock.
Actually he did The Black Album, Load, Reload, Garage Inc. Disk 1. And Then went and did this.
Load and Reload sounds even better than Black album.

😂 I love Bob’s relationship with the band. Oh you’re the best metal band in the world huh…well this snare is off beat lol
2:37 play this 5 times 😂
Lars’ recommendation to quadruple the guitar tracks was the worst thing Kirks ever heard in his life lol
they put a lot into this.
Hahahha no album was garbage. They didnt start trying again till Death Magnetic
Kirk: total pro (except for those flip flops)
James: pro
Lars: the opposite of pro

Is it from "Some Kind of Monster" Video or?
Wait, they actually listened to some of it before releasing it?
Only when James was around.
Only before 4pm

Yes it is 👍

Yeah, the problem with the St Anger album is the timing of the snare, not the tone of the snare.
Nah man that snare covers too much sonic space it drones out everything
The snare sound is the best part about St Anger.
At least they tried something new instead of generic metal drum tone #1689641
