Thank you for the wonderful video! It’s the the best La Palma astronomy guide ever!! The island looks absolutely beautiful, with stunning landscapes and charming accommodations. Surely it must be the #1 destination for amateurs. Now I want to go! The Silver, Saddle, and Apache campground in New Mexico holds a special place in my heart as well. It was where I had my first dark sky experience many years ago. I hauled a 10” Meade Cassegrain, the large field tripod, wedge, clock drive, medium format film camera, batteries, and accessories-all on a plane! Those were wild days!
Last year I brought my C11 to La Palma too 😁 never again, it’s too much stress. NM has some awesome skies as well, I wanted to visit this Astro hotel I saw in Silver City earlier this year when I was traveling through the US but sadly they were all booked out! You guys have way more options for dark skies than we do in Europe!
Great video. Been to Athos a number of times and fondly remember the stunning views the 25" delivered (no everyday objects, though). Nice to see the mirror has been recoated. Keep up the great work. Best wishes from Appenzell.
Kedves Luca! Én nem tudok angolul, azért a videókat fordítoval nézem. Egyszerűen eszméletlen egy hely. Mint egy menyország! Tiszta égboltot, és jó szorakozást kívánok!
Wow, Luca....I love your lifestyle! You're a lovely articulate woman, able to enjoy astronomy to it fullest. In Texas, we have the McDonald Observatory in the Big Bend area where astronomers enjoy Bortle 1 skies most of the year. I've been to many star parties there and stayed at the observatory a couple of times. My all-time finest astro moment was observing M51 through a 36" dobsonian during one of the star parties. The air was wonderfully stable and presented the galaxy's granulated spiral arms like a photograph. I look forward to more of your excellent videos... Michael.
Oh, wow!! Thanks for the informative video! I'm already checking flights and all, I definitely want to visit there soon. I've been to San Pedro de Atacama in Chile recently, it was awesome, we visited a telescope farm and the sky there was absolutely gorgeous, even with a Moon (unfortunately is was useless for astrophotography). The downside there is the extreme environment, so La Palma seems to be a lot more inviting. :) And yes, I'll make sure to go there when there is no Moon.
Hi there, great video! I've been thinking about visiting Athos for years, but just couldn't convince my wife yet. She isn't into astronomy at all and going there alone? I don't know ... But I have many connections to this video! First: I am from Switzerland, too, but from the other side of the Alps living near Lake Constance 😊. And my mother and her husband used to live there for ten years near Los Llanos ... south of Los Llanos ... just a few miles ... you probably know where I am getting at 😢. The eruption three years ago covered their house and beautiful garden under 15 meters of lava 😩. It took them several months of mourning, but they are back in Switzerland and fine. And it's so absolutely clear that there is nothing you can do when these forces of nature become unleashed! When I go back and look at videos of the eruption it still impresses me massively, that was really hell opening up! But of course I've been there several times, the last time just a few months before the eruption, it's a beautiful place 🤩! Maybe? Some day? Time will tell 😅.
I think it’s an interesting place you go even if you’re not super into astronomy - at least once 😁 plus seeing a million stars anywhere you look is different from doing astro in your back yard in Switzerland! Yes the eruption was a tragedy, followed by the huge fires, they’ve really had a difficult few years recently! I hope you’ll get to convince your wife to visit. This year we also met 2 different guys who were there alone so it’s doable but of course it’s less fun. Clear skies!
@@the_space_koala I want to stay on the northern part of the island and get up Teide with a rental car. Luckily, there are services offering hand control rental cars (I'm paraplegic). Currently assembling a truly flight-friendly kit - main limiting factors are weight, size and battery capacity (100 Wh per unit, 160 only with permit from the airline).
Yes, the battery is the most difficult part of it all…I’ve been there 😁 this sounds like a good plan - Tenerife has a lot of places to visit even outside of Astro 😁 have fun!
Hi kedves, hölgyem, én is fordítóval nézem ezt a csodás videót, szívből gratulálok, csodás mesés tájon jársz,az ott La Palma az egyik legjobb legszebb hely asztrofotózás szempontból, én is imádok asztrofotózni de csak mobiltelefonnal amivel értékelhető fotókat lehet készíteni, aztán festményeket készítek róluk, én is mennék ilyan mesés helyekre de sajnos anyagi helyzetem miatt nem engedhetem meg magamnak, jó nyaralást, jó pihenést, üdv Romániából❤️🙏❤️
@@the_space_koala szívesen, igazán mesés helyen jártok, örülök, hogy jól éreztétek magatokat, wow de klassz, minden bizonnyal gyönyörű fotókat készítettél mobiltelefonnal is, szívből örülök nektek, izgatottan várom az általad készített mobilfotókat is,kellemes hétvégét nektek!
I know well the place, and of course the observatory, where I've been several times. When young I observed in the W. Herschel and Nordic telescope. I've been told that nowadays all is becoming remote, taking out the best part of professional astronomy.
I recently visited an observatory in Arizona and a Japanese research group had a remote obsy there. So not only do they observe remote, but in the daytime 😁
@@the_space_koala I remember the nights of seeing sub 1" in the Palma, the residence, the sea of clouds below and the funny road upwards. Now, professional astronomy is getting even worse, all the bad things of the past but with less connection with the universe. It's mostly data processing behind computer screens.
@@the_space_koala doing a video on transporting telescope equipment would be a fantastic episode. I am buying a new Celestron evolution and will be traveling some including the Canary Islands with it and have been trying to figure out how to take it with me.
Is there a possibility to cook in the cottages? Is theire a frigde in the cottages and how expensive is that? I was just a month a go on the island and I comes from 2011 to this island for a (astro) holiday.
You should watch the video - I showed the (common) kitchen. There’s the communal kitchen where you can cook there’s a fridge etc. otherwise they have 1 individual house that has everything separately. I linked the website of the place in the description!
Sadly it’s quite difficult to do that. The cost of getting anything there is too high being a small island - so I’ve heard from local amateur astronomers just trying to build up their own observatories. The monthly cost would likely be too high to compete with such structures in Mainland Spain where the prices have become very competitive!
Hi beautiful lady,I congratulate you from the bottom of my heart, it's really one of the most beautiful places in a beautiful landscape, also from the point of view of astrophotography, I would also like to go to such places, but unfortunately I can't afford it financially, I also love to do astrophotography, only with a mobile phone, which can be used to take really appreciable astrophotos, I also love to paint, have a nice holiday, greetings from Romania❤️🙏❤️
Certainly politically Europe but so far south i'd say geographically Africa? The Maderian archipeligo too?Not sure about the Azores as they are further north.Unlike the Pacific islands where many are called Oceania all Altantic ones geographically belong to a continent.
Yes it’s clearly Africa geographically speaking. Where it’s not volcanoes it’s sand dunes 😁 but for us as Europeans I guess the fact that it’s Spain makes travel a lot easier!
Great video, planning to visit La Palma this year and test my Dwarf 3 under this perfect dark sky.
wonderful video; checking out to go there right now!
Glad I could inspire you 😁

Very true !!! Parador at the foot of El Teide on Teneriffa is very dark as well.
It’s a lovely hotel and Tenerife offers much more to do, but La Palma is much darker!
