    My adventure vehicle of choice in a Toyota Rav 4. Had a roof rack but age stopped me from putting a kayak on top. Added a kayak trailer to the arsenal and haven't look back. Trailer also has room for our bikes. Next addition is a top carrier since I have the rack. Best news is it's all paid for. Thanks for the video and take care, Al

    I'm still rockin' my 2002 Honda CR-V LX "4WD". It's easy to work on and still runs smooth as new. It recently took me on a 5,000 mile round trip from the coast of NC to Yellowstone. I'm 6' 2" and spent every night sleeping in it.

    I really enjoyed today's video. The vehicle that was the best most comfortable for adventures was the 2000 Honda Odyssey. I had to give it up at 250K miles, still miss it on long drive but not trying to load a boat on the roof after a long day of paddling. I am also part of the Subaru club now. Not quite as comfortable for long drives but the AWD is handy sometimes. I raise a toast to your departed Yaris and welcome you to the subaru club.

    The small and mid sized hatchback SUV’s (with a relatively flat roofline for carrying kayaks, of course) can all be used in this way, mine is a Subaru Forester, absolutely love it, built a very simple removable sleeping platform for the back (to flatten it out when rear seats are folded down) and there’s plenty of room for sleeping and everything I need. Seems like more and more folks are doing this to their cars.

    Oh man, I have to agree with you. I had a 2008 2 dr. hatchback (standard transmission). I bought it new for $13,500 out the door, and it was my most reliable and economical vehicle ever. MY goal was to drive it the distance of One Light Second, and I almost made it. At 185,000 miles I totaled it. I wanted to replace it, but there were no standard transmissions available. I ended up getting a Prius C, which was not as reliable, though it did give me 55 mpg, 15 more than I was getting with the Yaris. These days I'm in a Subaru Crosstrek which I'm pretty happy with, and it's easy to get a kayak on the roof.
    PS As far as carrying boats on small cars: When I was in high school, one of my teachers was a canoe enthusiast and carried a 16 foot Old Town on his Triumph GT6. It looked like it would float if you flipped it over in a pond.

    I had a couple of little Toyotas, a rear wheel drive Corolla sedan, and then a two door Tercel, that got us through the lat '70s, and well into the '80s, but a dishonest dealer's service department tried to scare my wife into a approving a huge, and unnecessary, service job, and I switched to Hondas, some wee, bitty, Civics, Accords, and, lately, what is, now, a twelve year old CR/V. Four cylinder engines, and most of them 5 speed manual transmissions. I've covered a lot of ground, with a lot of passengers, and a lot of gear! Roof racks and trailer hitches, baby! I'm grateful, a week away from my 74th birthday, that I don't have to cartop a boat any more, but I know I could do it if it meant the ability to get out on the water. I think it was in one of Lynn and Larry Pardey's early books that I first heard, "Go simple. Go small. Go now." It's still true! Thanks for reminding me!

    Yeah, I'm a Toyota fan through and through. I learned to drive, and got my license, in a Toyota Corolla in 1980. Since getting my license I've largely been driving Toyota Hiace vans starting with a 1976 Mk1. Had them with lots of seats to take lots of people everywhere, tramping, camping, .... Could take kayaks on the roof and/or tow a trailer. We're on my third Hiace, a 4wd diesel, that we've had since 2005 and we've put on a massive 60,000km since then. Just so reliable. I believe they were banned for the 'US of Aye?' many years ago because of a lack of frontal impact protection.

    • @AdventureOtaku
      @AdventureOtaku  8 дней назад

      yeah, we have had various Toyota vans....but none in a while. If they made a "sprinter" like van I would switch in a heartbeat.

      @@AdventureOtaku The new one has the engine in the front and a wider body. Still smaller than the sprinter though. My twin ditched his sprinter and went back to Toyota Hiace. Servicing costs for the Sprinter were too high. The fuel economy with the Sprinter was impressive.

    I wish I could say that I haven't had to replace Clutch Flywheel, rear shocks and breaks a few times on my VW Passat 115,000 miles and going up. It has been the most reliable car I have ever owned. It has just gone in to the garage today to have a service and the rear bushes replaced as living in the country it gets a bit of a hammering.
    The Yaris this side of the pond is a smaller car with it being a Hatch Back. I have seen a good few times super minis like the Peugeot 106 with Kayaks and even a 16 foot canoe strapped to the roof. Which looked hilarious as it over hung both ends by a lot, especially the rear.
    I have a large car( Euro Standards) and a Motorhome to get me places, but it only makes it that bit easier. I would happily build a kayak trailer to go with my bike and go off on an adventure. just need to get new tools past the wife to build one. It would just increase the level of adventure having to really think and put in a bit more effort to get somewhere.

      @@AdventureOtaku yup. I love my built out rig. It makes everything easier and more comfy. And at 52, doing it like I did when was in my 20s would not be fun. And I haven’t gotten to where I am in life to live like a pauper. But other than the wheeling that my rig can do, it’s not necessary to do everything else I do- mountain biking, hiking, paddling, traveling. I’ve done everything else that I still do in much lesser vehicles when I was younger. My first was a Ford Escort and then a Dodge Neon. I always tell people- just take what you have and get out and do stuff. You can acquire the stuff later as you find you either need it or want it bc it will make life easier. But that way you’re out doing things, and when you do get stuff it’s not just consumerism for the sake of it, but stuff that is actually useful to you. Have fun out there and keep on having those adventures. 🤙

      My XC70 was ready about to need near its value in repairs at 117k and ten years. It had only eaten wear items tires, bulbs, and batteries until then. It still looked great. The AC compressor was near death, the suspension was shot (lots of soft roads with rocks and interstates with huge holes), the driver’s seat was very warn (big driver with boney butt), and the kicker was the fancy headlights needed a $2,500 repair.
      The Europeans have a deal between the government and automakers to allow cars to obsolete themselves in ten years or 100k for the sake of jobs and the environment. I don’t think it’s really green, and I doubt they really do either.
