  • Here's how to time your runs
Prepare a timer. Focus on the "Ready, Set, Go" part of the dialogue. You want to press X on "Set" at the exact same time you start the timer, one finger for each. In the end, when the little autosave icon appears on the bottom right, that's when you stop the timer.
Dialogue possibilities before getting the Gold Ankh Piece
    86 seconds and up:
"Back again at last, eh? What took you so long? [x] seconds is a pretty pathetic time, my friend.
You should come back when you've worked out a bit more!"
    79-85 seconds:
"Not bad, [x] seconds. Obviously not as fast as my record time.
With more training I'm sure you can do better."
    78 seconds and under:
"Eh what?! How can you be back already? You must have cheated! [x] seconds, that is amazing!
Such a time deserves a reward. Here, take this; may it bring you good health on your journey."
If you meet the exact same record as a previous attempt, he won't point it out; he will say what he said the first time you met said record.
As you can see from the dialogue, when you first achieve a time of 78 seconds or under, he gives you a reward (Gold Ankh Piece), which is the only thing of use he can give you. After getting the Gold Ankh Piece, the dialogue possibilities change after that in the following ways...
If you beat your best time
"Excellent! [x] seconds is a new record! That time is going to take some beating."
If you do your best time again
"Well, you managed to equal your record time of [x] seconds. That's going to be a tough time to beat."
If you fail to reach your best time
"Not quick enough, I'm afraid. You managed it in [x] seconds and your best time is [x] seconds."
(He says the above even if you do a 'pretty pathetic' time of 86 seconds and up)
