  • I have been listening and attempting to play along to this song for a couple years. I have a bit of ADD, so when I sit down to this song, I never sit down and learn it, I just feel it out.
Carl Palmer is truly inimitable, but I had fun!
Today felt pretty right (I'd say 80% there) and I wanted to share it!
My intention is to do both parts 1 and 2, but a 13 minute video is kind of daunting.
From their amazing album, Brain Salad Surgery, 1973, Manticore Records

Outstanding effort. You are obviously dedicated and talented, most guys of any age or skill level wouldn’t attempt what you pretty much crushed. My wife asked me what rock drummer I thought was the GOAT, and I told her Carl Palmer was a guy who had percussion chops that were beyond almost everybody else. I have to confess, your video showed up on my feed and I clicked on it expecting to see a guy crash and burn. Happy to see you do a great job, cheers to you for giving it a go

I prefer drum covers like this, where it's not about being note for note, but more about a real cover. Mad respect for pulling it off on a 4 piece as well. Also, the actual way you hit the drum is great, not mushy - all around great job (I'm a drummer giving this compliment as well).

Thanks! I appreciate it, I really try to feel the song my way. I know i'll never be carl palmer, but I gotta try and spread how awesome he is

I think he did an amazing job too! He did way better than I ever did when I did on the drums. I now play guitar (which I can play this song on. & I play piano/synthesizer)

I'm a drummer and I love the way you do the riff at 3.41 with single strokes. That's fast! Great version, thank you! Looking forward to your Parts 2 & 3! I actually think your drums sound better than then tinny metal drums Carl had built which looked great but sounded somewhat anemic. (I never liked the metallic sound compared to the beautiful Ludwig kit he used on Tarkus & Trilogy)

Thanks! I really like the way my drum mix came out on this, I was definitely missing the cowbell, but the drum part sounds a lot better up front and in your face.

🤔🤔 when I originally found the bands name I thought "Emerson", "Lake" & "Palmer" were the 3 guys 1st names.
Then my brother told me their actual 1st names & I was like "oh. Well that makes better sense"

Great job on a tough tune! It's hard to play with only 2 toms yet you still pulled it off because of the great chops, and intense spirit you put into it!

Do you realize that you just took on one of the most complex drum songs ever written? You are very, very good! Excellent ! (PS: I agree; you did a good job on the recording as well...nice tone on the drums)

One of the few player that actually plays from @2:58 on correctly. Lot of player take the lazy route on this part. Love coming back to this video.

I thought you did a wonderful job. This is probably one of the most complex songs in rock history especially for drummers.I mean your single stroke rolls aren't as smooth as Palmers(then again NO ones single stroke rolls are). But an excellent cover nonetheless.Nicely done.!!

Don't give up! Keep on practicing, I can play this song in this manner because:
I'd been listening to the song on and off for 15 years
(At the time) I practiced a lot in general (At least 2-3 hours/day 3-5x week)
This (not perfect at all) take probably took a total of 9 hours over two days
