We may not use or hear the phrase “Everyone did what was right in his own eyes” anymore, but we hear very similar phrases today like “follow your heart” and “you be you” or “do what makes you happy” and they all leave out the truth of what God’s word says. Like was mentioned in the podcast, where God isn’t regarded, feared and honored and when we follow our own desires, there isn’t a deep, lasting and sustaining joy. Joy isn’t found in following every longing our hearts. It’s found in Him! HE and HE alone is where the JOY is!

Another saying that's frequently heard is "if it feels good, do it." In the 70's there was a song with the lyrics "if you're not with the one you love, love the one you're with " . Same sentiment. (I was a teen in the 70's. A very popular song by the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.)

"Do your own thing-- as long as it doesn't hurt anyone" became the motto of the 1970's. This is now applied to so many things, saying that it doesn't hurt anybody. But many things that God says are wrong are destroying families and our society.

2 things really stood out to me here. 1- Obedience does not always mean success or enjoyable outcomes. 2- without God as our True North, we lose our moral compass and cannot really tell where the borders are between right and wrong. That lack of guidance from God's absolute truth is rampant in our world today, sometimes even in churches which have strayed from Obedience. Lord, please turn our straying hearts back to you! Bring revival on this land rather than punishment, please. But Your Will be done.

I have a Womens Study Bible. There are a lot of good notes concerning women and their role throughout the Scripture. In the final chapter, there is a synopsis of the wives of Benjamin. Throughout these last chapters is a lot of murder, chaos, sexual perversion and family erosion. However, an insight is that through these women, God in His grace used the victims of this tragedy to accomplish His own purpose in selecting Saul, a member of the tribe of Benjamin, as the first king of Israel. (1Sam. 9:1-2) This show us that God can still work out His plan amongst all that we mess up!!

My heart aches when I read these things because Israel was being so wicked and lustful. So full of themselves and their own wants. They only sought His guidance when they were failing or felt like they needed help, but didn't stay consistent in relationship with Him...
Oh, man. That image that stares back at me in the mirror can fall into her own wicked ways and fail to remember to seek Him FIRST... the kingdom of God, and His righteousness... hallelujah that He knows that about me and still shows up when I repent and remember. Let me be mindful every minute of the day to let Him direct my path, not to follow my fickle, emotional heart.

We always make a mess when we try to do things our way... Think about today. People have all the best intentions, but we are still suffering, lost, and sin rules over us. We can't have true peace nor justice without God having His way.

“God is love,”(1 Jn 4:8) and “anyone who does not love does not know God.” God in His love allows us to make stunning, sordid choices because He wants our hearts to change and to seek Him in humility. But when “everyone does whatever seems right in their own eyes” (Judg 21:25), we get a society built on Sartre’s existentialism: “existence precedes essence” where there is nothing God-ordained about who we are, and we must each make our own meaning. The result is chronicled in yesterday’s non-political essay by Ben Shapiro on “The Hot Stove Society.” What rescues us as daily Bible readers from all this horror? The grace and humility of Ruth and Hannah, who lived in the days of anarchy. Hannah sings, “There is no one holy like the LORD! There is no one besides You; there is no Rock like our God!” (1 Sam 2:2)

God loves His chosen people and reveals His love through this account of sin and discipline for the nation descended into sin.
It has been made clear that "There was no king in Israel" and "Everyone did what was right in their own eyes", meaning that the people were not following godly leadership and did not seek God in their day-to-day activities. This reveals their hearts for sin with the eyes being the window to the soul by which sin enters, as we have seen previously in scripture, as far back as Genesis 3:5-7. Israel has a sin problem.
A Levite man from Ephraim had a concubine - essentially a cross between a slave and a wife - who had committed adultery and afterward fled to live with her parents in Bethlehem. None of the characters in this account are honored with names, which is a very bad sign and tells us that something really awful is coming. The Levite at first seemed to do what was right and went to find her to try to reconcile, even though he was within his right to divorce her. It appears that the concubine's father was attempting to ingratiate himself to the Levite to atone for his daughter's sin, and the father was very lavish in his hospitality and urged the Levite to stay longer than he had planned. During the fifth day, the father urged the Levite to stay yet another day, but the Levite unwisely insisted upon leaving without leaving adequate time for travel and establishing lodging in a safe city.
The Levite, his servant, and his concubine set out and nearing sunset found themselves near the still-pagan city of Jebus but the Levite refused to stop there for the night and kept going. He seemed to fear for his safety and instead sought an Israelite city. He continued on his way for about another 5 miles, to Gibeah - a Benjamite city. By this time, it was likely already dark and many people had already closed themselves in their homes for the night. No one offered them lodging and they were going to sleep out in the open in the city square. Even considering their late arrival, this was a bad sign that no one from Gibeah treated them with hospitality.
An old man, also from Ephraim, was late in returning home and encountered the people trying to bed down in the city square. He spoke to them and then urged them to join him in his home for hospitality, which they did. Soon the evil and perverted men of Gibeah came pounding on the door demanding that the Levite come out so they may have their way with him. These events are deliberately similar to the events in the account of Sodom and Gomorrah to illustrate the depth of sin and depravity there. The host refused the men, offering to give them his own daughter and the Levite's concubine instead. The men seemed disinterested and they continued their demands. The concubine was then pushed out the door to try to appease the men. It is not clear exactly which man did this, which indicates that the guilt was on both of them for what happened next. The men outside raped and beat the woman all night long until they were done with her and she collapsed and died on the stoop of the house where her master was. The relationship now is clear as scripture now refers to the Levite as her master where he was earlier described as husband. He had sacrificed her to save himself. This was an act of great depravity as he was her caretaker and she trusted him as such.
In the morning, as her master was trying to leave he sees her just outside the door and callously tells her to get up. When she doesn't respond, he picks up her body, loads her on his donkey, and takes her to his home. There, instead of burying her properly with any semblance of respect, he instead desecrates her body by cutting her up into twelve parts and sends one part each to the tribes of Israel. This was clearly an act intended to incite rage and revenge and not an act coming from any need for righteousness.
The rest of Israel is indeed righteously enraged and representatives from each tribe gather together to plan judgment upon Gibeah. The Levite man further incites everyone there by telling the account of the concubine, conveniently leaving out his part in allowing this to happen. The men gathered decide to form an army and go to war against Gibeah to make them pay for this. They looked to Benjamin, the tribe of Gibeah, for help in dealing with this, but Benjamin refuses and instead forms an army of their own to defend against the army of the other tribes.
They go to battle and the attacking Israelites are soundly defeated, losing 22,000 men. They had not consulted with God in deciding what to do about this offense, but only in deciding which tribe should lead the attack. God seems to answer their judgment in their loss. Then they ask God if they should attack again and He tells them to do so. They battle again and Israel is defeated a second time, losing 18,000 more men. Finally, Israel seems to realize they have a sin problem also - not just the Benjamites - and properly fast and make offerings of atonement and peace to God. Then they ask if they should battle against Benjamin again and God says they should and he will give them the victory. God had used the two devastating defeats to bring the tribes to realize their own sins and bring them back to a proper state of servitude for Him and turn from their own lusts for revenge. Vengeance always belongs to God and is not for anyone to enact on their own.
The Israelites again attack and this time the Benjamites are soundly defeated. Only 600 men remain and the tribe seems doomed to extinction because of the excessive zeal of the other tribes. There are not enough women left for the men to repopulate the tribe and the Israelites have foolishly taken a vow that they will not allow anyone from their tribes to marry the Benjamite men. They find a city who had refused to participate in the fighting and they go and slaughter them without mercy. They take the 400 virgins that survive the slaughter and give them to the Benjamites, but that's still not enough wives. They should have renounced the ungodly vow they had taken and made up the difference themselves, but they stubbornly proceeded according to their own judgment. They then hatch a scheme to get around their vow. They tell the Benjamite men to gather near Shiloh when they have their yearly feast and steal the women of their own choosing as they come out to dance in celebration. The Israelites and Benjamites continue to pile sin upon sin as they conspire together to kidnap innocent women for their own purposes.
Even in sin, God still is with these people and is guiding them toward the proper way, even when they reject him. He still loves them and is ready for them to return to him in repentance.

The concubine of a Levite leaves to go live with her father. The Levite goes after her because he wants her back. When they finally leave the father-in-law's house, about 5 days later, they end up in Gibeah, which belongs to the Benjamites. They go to the town square, where a man sees them and urges them to stay at his home. But during the night, the leaders of the town come banging on the door, demanding that the Levite be given to them to have sex with. Wow! That is the evil sin of Sodom and Gomorrah. The man doesn't give up the Levite, but instead, offers his virgin daughter and the concubine. But, only the concubine ends up being pushed out. She ends up being raped and abused all night. She makes it back to the house in the morning, where she collapses and dies at the door. The Levite takes the concubine home, cuts her body into pieces & spreads those body parts throughout Israel. This signals all of the men to gather to find out what happened. Israel confronts Benjamin and demands the men of Gibeah be handed over. Benjamin refuses, which signals war. Benjamin gathers 26,000 men to battle, plus 700 from Gibeah. Out of this battalion, 700 are left-handed & can shoot a slingshot perfectly. Interesting piece of info to include. Israel gathers its men for war, totaling 400,000. The only good thing in this whole story was that Israel went to Bethel to inquire with the Lord on whether they should go to battle. The Lord answers them with a yes, starting with Judah. They go against Benjamin but are defeated. The Benjamites kill 22,000 of Israel's men. Israel takes courage and decides to go up against Benjamin again, but again, they are defeated. This time, Benjamin kills 18,000 of their men. Heads low, Israel goes back to Bethel, weeping. Phinehas the priest, son of Eleazar, is there as well as the ark of the covenant. This time, Israel doesn't just inquire of the Lord. First, they fast until evening. Then, they offer burnt and peace offerings. There is no mention of them doing this the first time they inquired of the Lord. I believe this time around, they came with true and repentant hearts. They offered up sacrifices and worship before making their inquiry. So, when Israel inquires with the Lord this, they are not only told to go into battle but that they will defeat Benjamin. And, by God's grace, they do. After winning the battle, there's a very strange and ungodly sequence of events where the men of Israel acquire wives for the remaining Benjamite men. Unfortunately, the book ends with Judges 21:25 saying, "In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes." What a crazy end to this book! Israel has these glimpses of obedience, but they are never wholeheartedly devoted to the Lord. The fact that the Lord answered Israel's inquiry is a continual sign of His faithfulness to unfaithful people. God is so gracious and merciful. I am so grateful that when I fail, which is daily, that my heavenly Father doesn't give up on me. Lord, when I fail and fall into sin, make my heart weep over it so that I turn back to You. Thank You, Jesus Christ, that You came, lived, died, and then rose from the dead. Your sacrifice paid for all of my sin, past, present, and future. Thank You, Father God, for Your grace and mercy made new every morning. In Jesus' name, Amen.
What Tara-Leigh says about obedience was something that I didn't think about. We can be obedient to the Lord and what He says, but it does not mean that we will get our intended outcome, as evidence of Israel losing to the Benjamites the first 2 times. Even with unfortunate circumstances, we need to keep seeking God.

And the Israelites inquired of the Lord. (In those days the ark of the covenant of God was there, with Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, ministering before it.) They asked, “Shall we go up again to fight against the Benjamites, our fellow Israelites, or not?” The Lord responded, “Go, for tomorrow I will give them into your hands.” The Lord defeated Benjamin before Israel, and on that day the Israelites struck down 25,100 Benjamites, all armed with swords.
    Judges 20:27‭-‬28‭, ‬35 NIV
In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit.
    Judges 21:25 NIV

Was anyone else confused about the reference to Phineas, son of Eleazer, son of Aaron? If over 300 years had passed since the people entered the Promised Land, wouldn't Phineas be dead? Maybe the descendants were alternatively named Eleazer and Phineas to mark them as high priest?

Great insight. Commentaries say that because of this verse, the events in these chapters are not chronological. It had to occur much earlier. Within 20 years of Joshua's death and before Samson's. Otherwise, you're right he'd be 300 or so years old and that is not likely.

This passage is used by people who no nothing about the Bible and are hostile to Christianity, only taking the dividing and distributing of the woman 's body, either to say the Bible is a terrible book or to complain about Christians wanting some books banned from schools. So this passage teaches what happens under anarchy, how corrupt man can be, and the abusing and raping of this woman was so appalling that people went to war to destroy the guilty people. Distressing narrative of ungodly behavior, but it is consistent with the theme of the Bible, especially because we know it leads to the need for a Savior.

God sent the Israelites into battle twice before they had victory. They were defeated and lost many men the first two times.
This was a hard read for me with the gang rape. I had a difficult time seeing God. Also hard to read of the women being kidnapped and taken for wives. I think of the horror women of these times experienced and imagine what it would have been like. It's hard to swallow.

I admit with TLC when she said the reading was a horrific one because it sure was. I was wondering why it took God so long a time or so many lives long before He actually gave them victory. But I mean that's the bible for you, you can't always have answers to all scriptures in a day, but hopefully someday we'll differently and maybe at different times too. I'm just glad I didn't visit the world then because I sure would have suffered a great deal 😢

Doing right in our own eyes is the problem and we all are sinners and when we fail to consult God we are not doing what is right in God's eye therefore no joy.

    #1. Levites are allowed concubines?
#2. Why did she feel the need to play the harlot & leave him? Clearly she was not happy being with him.
#3. The old man..... seriously, offering your virgin daughter to save a man you don't even know, just because he's a Levite.
#4. The Levite throws her out to the dogs to save himself & then says to the concubine " come on let's go"! Are you kidding me. Dismembering her body & getting justice for what the perverted men did to her but he already destroyed her mind, body, & soul himself.
No wonder we all need a Savior to save us from ourselves.
#5. Thousands upon thousands lives slain over the injustice.
So in this time in history what could have been done differently?
I'm going to research the culture of that time.

It's a typical description of evidence that everyone did what was right in their own eyes. God wasn't involved in all the listed above. And that's why we need to involve God in all things we partake of...
