Oh wow, thank you for uploading this! This never aired on CBS, the network that aired the Olympics in '94. They showed her SP but not her LP. I remember they showed her in the practice session but didn't air her LP, only those of the top skaters. I always wondered how Tanja did in her LP...20 years later, I get to see it!

Canadian judge marked this behind Josee Chouinard... Don't know how you could justify that.

+Timothy Horning Tanja did all that work and quality to get only 5.4-5.7 in technical, but meanwhile Oksana and her lack of content and ERRORS got a 5.9 in technical and 5.9s in (juvenile) artistry? That is a crime. If Oksana gets a 5.9 in technical, than Lu Chen should get a 6.5! Nancy won fair and square, and Oksana wasn't even close to the gold medal. No, not with her free skate.

Agreed. I think people got caught up in the whole O.B. story, including the judges. In hindsight her long program is really lacking. The judges should've been able to better though -- no triple jumps in combo, no change-foot combo spin, and for two years in a row no less!

How did this girl beat tonya's performance with 2 shaky triples and 1 hand down.

Summer Late27 Same thoughts, i don't think this program was techically strong but it is artistically fine but overall i don't think she should be ahead of tonya.

The more appropriate question: how did even Baiul's performance beat this?!?!

    • @grantgoffin4774

@@buffyslays5260 Tonya actually had only 3 triples while this program had 5, discounting the triple toe she missed. And even so Tonya had higher technical marks, but this program had higher artistic marks which is why she came ahead in the long by 1 placing. And since Tanja was way ahead in the short she would have come ahead even if Tonya beat her in the long. Tonya did beat Witt in the long but came behind overall due to the short program results.

Tanja - another victim and robbed skater of these games. This program and performance also was at an actual ladies level - high level content and impression, whereas Oksana and her team did not prepare well. Oksana's program was outgrown and out-of-place. Oksana was really outside of the top 5 for the free program. It's an insult to the sport and the Olympics that she won or even finished in the top 5. The skating events were wonderful at this Olympics, but disgustingly corrupt and fixed.

+Scott Fiero That 1993 World Championships result was another minus, and it's also involving Oksana. Surya won the '93 World's fair and square with her strong athleticism yes, but she came a long, long way in one year in her presentation and skating skills. Surya's '93 World's performance of her Four Seasons program was the best she ever performed that program, and she interpreted the Four Seasons very well.

+chocolatesupport I agree, Surya should've won 1993 worlds, but I guess she was just happy to be second considering the season she had in 1992. I wonder if the loss in 1993 had anything to do with her hissy-fit in 1994 (when I think she was definitely did not deserve to be first).

Yes, it must've been frustrating to be beaten by a skater who had never beaten her before (other than 1992 worlds I suppose), but Sato truly did outskate her.

You gentlemen have made great points and really understand of what happened back then. You didn't just watch the performances, you REALLY watched them! But even if Bonaly was just happy to get silver in '93 because of being on the world's podium for the first time, she still had a case to be upset over only being second place in 1993, because not only was her long program complete and just perfect technically and just superior overall to Baiul, it's a fact that just before the '93 World's , Bonaly beat Baiul to win the '93 European Championships. Overall, the 1993 Ladies results at that Worlds was and is unacceptable. Bonaly was outright robbed of the gold and the world title. She was THE winner that year, 1993.
