Fun fact: Uri Geller actually hosted a show in germany a couple years back called "the next uri geller", a talent show for magicians. So yeah, he's still famous and making more money than ever...
During breaks he performed tricks where you put a spoon on the top of your TV and then he used his "psychic powers" to push it down. At a viewer count of about 3 ~4 million, some spoons are obviously going to fall down and they had viewers record the phenomenon and showed them after the breaks, getting more and more people to believe in this nonsense.
I think this kind of abuse is what Randi is trying to stop and he has my utmost respect for that

If you bothered to check it out you'd know that, because they both tell the audience at the end genius. I am presuming you're talking about the million dollar challenge he's got going that NOBODY has won despite it being on offer for many years, they've ALL been proven fake, just like Uri Geller was. Other than that I have no idea what "show" you're raving about.

0x777. My apologies, you are absolutely correct. My only excuse is age and having watched too many con man type videos, I'd also only just watched that video James Randy and some guy did where they pretended he'd made a computer program that he could use to read peoples minds and they went through all the tests and pretended he'd actually won the million dollar reward he has on offer. It was all done very convincingly right up to the end where he apparently forgot to date the cheque and hey bingo, it was on April first and they'd worked together to make it all look real. It was surprisingly convincing. I had that show fresh in my mind and stupidly didn't double check back on what you were actually responding too. My bad, sorry.

Notice how he flips thru both books at the beginning, and from the first book he specifically says choose the most unusual word from the FIRST line. He simply picked page 91 because it the word "entangled" was the most unusual or complex that he found out of the other pages he scanned though, thus given the set of conditions he imposed, that word was the most probable candidate for someone to choose. At this point he already has the word chosen in his mind, and drops the first book on purpose, and flipping thru the second book was just a show. It doesn't matter when the other person tells him to stop, he will say he stopped at page 91 regardless, or in otherwords behaving as a fake 'random' number generator that always gives the same result. The other chap could have busted the trick by looking exactly at what page number he stopped at and getting the word based on that real random page number (as long as its not page 91) or instead of chosing the word "entangled" on p91, choose a word like "the", or something opposite of the conditions he imposed, if it was on first line of that page. There: magic trick exposed!

A couple of corrections. Uri Gelller appeared on The Tonight Show in August, 1973. And Johnny Carson's intent was not to _expose_ Geller as the fraud he is. Instead, Carson (a skeptic and former magician) asked Randi for advice on the best way to ensure that Geller give a demonstration of his alleged 'powers', with controls added to thwart any potential for "trickery".
Sadly, while Geller failed miserably, of course, it only burnished his career. Rather than look at Geller as the fucking charlatan he is, many in the public believed that, if he were a trickster, he would succeed every time. The fact that he failed gave credence to the notion that it must be real, otherwise he would have succeeded. You see how deeply delusion runs.
Likewise, Randi rejected the notion that he was a 'debunker' of supernatural claims. He was a skeptic and over decades his skepticism was proven correct 100% of the time. Had Randi been presented with incontrovertible evidence of the supernatural, he would have accepted it.

Then says which type of word. ie- one that isn’t a usual word. A great trick though, I had to rewind a few times to see what he did. I’m sure Randy is one guy that wouldn’t mind a trick being exposed.

Apart from Geller, one of Randi's biggest haters was so-called 'psychic', the late Sylvia Browne. Browne serves as a great example of why it's not all about money.
On _two separate occasions_ Browne, on daytime TV shows, told the parents of missing Shawn Hornbeck (who disappeared in 2002) and Amanda Berry (one of the girls who went missing in Cleveland) that their children were dead. Of course, Browne was wrong. Shawn was found in 2007 and Amanda escaped in 2013.

HOW THE BOOK TRICK IS DONE
Randi takes the guys book, he opens it wide bending the spine so that the guy is most likely going to stop at that page. He notes the page number, page 91 in this case, and selects a word that would not occur in the top line of every novel. The trick relies mainly on Randi getting the guy to stop on that predetermined page. Notice how the guy opens to the exact place that The Amazing Randi first examined when he brought over the books?
Now when Randi is flipping his book he must aim for a place that appears to be similar in thickness to page 91, and in this way he secretly guides the guy to the page he has chosen. Notice how Randi pretends he dropped the book in order to get another try at arriving at a believable place? Randi lies to the guy when he tells him he's on page 91 of his red book. This is the page Randi first opened to when he examined the other guy's book and chose the page and the word that are to be guessed.
The upside down writing is just more of Randi's charming flair that never fails to amaze.

He "slipped" as "stop" was said too early for him to hit page 91 of the orange book, but second time managed to fake landing there. Sure enough, "entangled" stood out. There were other options on the paper. Which the upside down maneuver took attention away from.

They're about to get married, but she doesn't want his teacher, the stern philosopher, Apollonius, at the wedding. But he shows up anyway, concerned that his young charge is about to ruin his life. Apollonius looks at Lamia, and the spell is broken. She's not a beautiful woman anymore, but the serpent she's always been. James Randi was our Apollonius of Tyana. You're putting yourself on the wrong side of a contradiction. Saying the supernatural "exists beyond the observable laws of science" means it doesn't exist in any meaningful sense of the word.
"Supernatural" is in itself a contradiction, because if some phenomenon has any effect, any tiniest miniscule effect on the world, whether it's a ghost knocking a cup over or a god answering prayers or a psychic reading your mind, that means the method by which it effected the world is also somehow natural and can be traced back to it's causes, using what you call "the observable laws of science". If any of these were proven to be true they would not be supernatural by definition.
By saying it's impossible for someone to gather evidence or understanding of the supernatural, you think you're protecting the possibility it might be true, but you're really showing there's no way for it to be true.

Everything else- mere distractions. He says to Greg precisely what page to open the book from what line to watch and what kind of word to look for.
