Man this guy hasn't missed a single time since this (and before) but the run since this album is something i wish i could get my friends to understand. Fascinating stuff
As someone that lives in Congo and was here when Nyiragongo erupted this year, my favorite line is "The forest inexorably growing as Kinshasa crumbles the dreams of Romans drowned out by Nyiragongo's rumble"
i can't say i am. i'm not really a b.o.b. fan. yeah, mainstream stuff is cool to review every once in a while, but i don't see myself really turning anyone onto b.o.b. with a review, honestly. *shrugs*
The cover of the album is a close-up of Robert Mugabe, longstanding and controversial President of Zimbabwe. With Woods' Zimbabwean background, the image and the title (a famous Castro quote) add another layer of deconstruction to the album's writing content itself. Glad you reviewed it and that Woods is getting more attention. The album is outstanding. "Pump Up the Volume" might be my favorite track though, but I can totally see why someone wouldn't like the out-of-nowhere hook.
the global north will never forgive Mugabe and Zimbabwe for overthrowing Rhodesia, trying to stop apartheid and undo colonialism. Zimbabwe is under multiple brutal economic sanctions for 20+ years and to this date the US is still doing it. Woods is the son of Zimbabwe immigrants and revolutionary activists.
I was impressed by the cover as I came across this work by coincidence on Bandcamp. I did buy it as the music is incredible with lyrics that are fly around as Schrapnells, the way I like it by the way as most in rock/ folk are way to soft these days.
I always found this album to be generally fantastic, especially from the Intro all they way up to Pompeii, just one solid track after another. So 2/3 of the album were already pretty great. Sadly I didn't dig too much anything after that except Sour Grapes and The Wake which is my favorite and the best song here, perfect closer. It's just a lil bit too long and he didn't really do anything new to keep my attention, the beats were also kinda not as interesting anymore in the last third of the album.. Those song were ofc not bad at all but kinda meh compared to the others. But regardless 8/10 for me.
Another great song that you should look up by Billy Woods is The Darkness, featuring Vordul Mega (one of the dudes from Cannibal Ox). I have no idea why it's not on this album. It's my favorite track from Billy Woods.
Damn I'm so late getting this album. Fucking great! Him and Elucid are becoming regulars for me. I would give my left kidney to hear Billy and him make a track with RTJ!
Hell yea thanks for reviewing my fav. rap album of the year. Good to see woods getting more exposure with this release. Have you listened to Ka's Grief Pedigree?
This album took me plenty of listens to understand what is going on.I do not regret it as it has turned out to be one of my very favorites up there with the likes of liquid swords and mad villainy.Billy Woods is like no other out there, nice review!
Right. Just wait for Earl's next album, which should be fantastic. OFWGKTA might not be that talented as a whole, but Earl is extremely intelligent and has crazy good flow. AND HE'S 18.
I have just discovered woods.. My new favorite rapper ..for now anyway.. This album is top shelf.. The wake.. I think is my favorite.. But body of work.. Powerful
Just to state my opinion on this, should anthony read it, I really like the jump cuts, because it breaks the monotony of speach. I don't think they're overused( unlike shane dawson, who can't finish a sentence without jump cutting -.-) So, from where I stand, I am a fan of the jumpcats and wacky effects, they are a real nice feature of Anthony's reviews.
Oh, and I'd suggest you'd check out Zeigenbock Kopf. Older, but probably one of the closest things to Death Grips that I've heard that came out before it.
I like pump up the volume personally, it is horrible in the way you described but at the same time i found somthing very great about it for that same reason
Mayday's "Take Me To Your Leader" album came out a few weeks ago. I'd like to know what you think of that. I'd also like to see a review of Prozak's album "Paranormal" And Krizz Kaliko's album "Kickin' and Screamin" is coming out in a week. That one should be interesting. I wouldn't mind hearing what you think about it when it comes out.
It's been a hot minute since this absolute GEM dropped, and it, and Crocodile Tears in particular, are still at least like in the top-10 objectively best rap specimen. Crocodile Tears flows like high speed fall down the 99 steps of the FUCK YOU staircase; crunchy like shattered teeth; vigorous and bright as a firenado. Punchlines that pull no punches, and they are coming out of nowhere every time. God. Damn!
@pizzadragon Sure have! In fact I've listened to most of his stuff, outside of The Chalice and his stuff as part of The Reavers and Super Chron Flight Brothers.
Just listened the album a couple of days ago. To me it's a decent 9, of of my favorites in conscious hip-hop, liked it even more than Black On Both Sides. And production reminds me Death Grips stuff so much a lot of the time. Thanks for the review. Btw, can't believe you didn't mention The Man Who Would Be A King, it's just simply the best track on album.
Huoratron, Cryptocracy. Support Finland! And Anthony, youäve expanded my musical horizon, thanks for music like Shlohmo, Godspeed you! Black Emperor and Fever Ray!
anthony, my man, why don't you make a video showing us all of your priced possessions, like lps or music memorabilia in general. that would be great. peace.
what do u mean ??? i said there were various RAP projects that he hasn't reviewed lately and the other guy mentioned death grips and i stated that it is more metal than "rap" or what people like to call hip hop
haha, fair response :) I suppose I would like to know his opinion on some of the bands I like as well but I think the introduction to new music is just as useful.
You tell him Cal! Just because Anthony's e-famous doesn't mean he gets to push you around! If you ever need a place to stay, I'll always have a bed available for you : )

Yes it does. It’s the start of an era.

Wow this album is this old? Over 10 years old and it sounds just as inspired and fresh as his new stuff. Incredible!
isn't it more interesting that his new stuff sounds just as inspired as his early work. most rappers would've fallen off by now

Review for Santigold's Master of My Make-Believe is needed.
I'm curious about what his opinion would be. Plus I don't plan on buying the album as a whole, and I know he goes through and critiques every song.
