So glad you are talking about this. I think some people feel they have to have all of a collection, because thats what others are doing and they don't want to be left out. Unfortunately, they miss out on the joy of collecting for themselves. It feels like we are dealing with what is "trending" in the doll collecting community.

I don't watch doll cartoons. I buy dolls based on how much I love their ascetics. I am drawn to dolls who have a specific style I trend to enjoy. For me that trends to be dolls who are more girly/glamour/pastel/goth ( but not always ) I am notoriously picky. I also love buying dolls who may not have a style I like but remind me more of a character I like. For example I recently brought Priscila from RH because she reminds me of superstar Barbie if she fused with Pinkie Pie from MLP. I like Delilah from RH because she reminds me of oddly enough Riko & Lyza from made in abyss. So much so I simply decided to rename my Delilah to Riko.

A lot of times I only end up completing a series cause my daughter & I tend to like different dolls 😂🤦🏻‍♀️. Like series 1 RH I know she really liked Violet & Poppy whereas I loved Sunny & Ruby. Also sales & clearance get me a lot since sometimes I like a base doll or just the fashion.

I find the idea of being a completionist quite stressful, especially at the rate and increasing prices of some of the current doll lines. So I think I would have to make a choice of ONE doll line to be a completionist of, because I like too many dolls from various different lines so there's no way I could be a completionist on all of those lines because I wouldn't be able to afford to keep it up.
But at the end of the day we're all different but we all love dolls so really it's whatever makes a doll collector happy.

I'm also a non-completionist similar to you but I'm also super into the dressup and mixing and matching aspect of dolls so I have been understanding the perspective of completionists who like to mix up outfits a lot more - although for me one of the reasons i'm not a completionist is that I get stressed out if I have a bunch of doll bases I'm not really into even if I like their clothes so either way i still wouldnt be able to handle the completionist grind orz, makes me really wish more doll brands had fashion packs tho LOL

Great video. I really enjoyed seeing things from different perspectives. I tend to shy away from being completionist because of my financial health but also because FOR ME it tends to be rooted in fear. It can start joyful but then it can become manic and I am financially stressed and I start feeling anxious and end up with dolls I feel meh about. I always end up taking a break and getting back in touch with the joy and the love of doll collecting. For me less is more. Maybe things will change if I win the lottery or something but I doubt it.

  • @daqiamer
    @daqiamer Год назад +1

This feel so wierd for me, because I have more the impression your video explain why people bought dolls that they dont like, more then a completionist explanation.
I think that you didn't had a lot of real completionist to give you the reasons and it was more people guessing.
I'm not completitionist with doll but I was before with lego bionicle, figurines, books series, etc.
Everytime I see completionist in video they do say that they hate some "pieces" of the set. I think it's really more the need to complete it. If the collection is not complete it give anxiety just knowing is incomplete. Yes, I think "the fear of missing out" is a big part of it, the fact that it look better on display too, but to me it's really more a satisfaction to have the whole collection.
I remember buying a sailor moon figure just for myself and I receive Sailor mercury as a gift... at this point I needed the whole sailor scout group because it wasn't possible to only have 2 but it was possible before to only have my favorite. What is hard to explain.
Its like checkbox on a list. It's really satisfying to check it and it's often after having the whole set that people realize they dont like some of them.
For being completionist sometime, I dont think that it's mentally and financially healty. Psychologically, it would be call a compulsive need for closure and like everything psychologically related it's so hard to explain.

I wad a completionist when it came to the first Haunt Couture wave of dolls. Since I got into doll collecting only recently, I didn't have any of the original Monster High dolls. It felt weird paying $80 for a playline doll on eBay. So, I thought I'd try and get my hands on these limited edition dolls that are a bit nicer than playline. I still spent the $80, but it felt like I was buying an overall nicer and newer doll. The only one I didn't love was Lagoona, but having her in hand I think she's grown on me.
Now that more Haunt Couture dolls re being released, I'm only buying characters that I don't already have. So, from Midnight Runway, I'm only going to try and get Spectra

I would consider myself a "set" completionist for sure because I find the idea of having every doll from whatever set(s) I'm collecting very fun! Also looks great on display. To go the extra mile I try to collect said lines(s) in & out of box. I'll (obviously) never be able to have every single Barbie produced (much to my chagrin), but usually sets overall are nice starts for me. Most of the time the sets I collect are fairly small, but My Scene and OMG are definitely taking a toll lol!

That is silly and not relevant at all, but in the last couple of minutes I noticed how Cleo's scarf from the Boo York Boo York line sways from your active hand gestures. It tickled my brain for some reason. I sat hypnotized, watching the micro-movements of a piece of fabric. I love such moments, because they remind me that the person on the other side is real. I hope that makes sense.
And as for the topic of the video, it was very interesting to hear a point of view opposite to mine. It was interesting that advertising pressure was not among the top reasons. I guess this is part of the FOMO point, but FOMO, I think, can occur for relatively rational reasons. We know that the doll will not be released again, so we are afraid to miss out. And I'm talking about the slogans on the boxes about the need to "collect them all". And all kinds of additions to the doll, which are relevant only if you have all the dolls in the collection. I can't think of a good example right now, but I'm pretty sure there were some dolls with attached posters that could be combined into one poster or something like that.

Your point about that scarf movement is a really sweet way to look at things. You seem like someone who notices the little things, and I like how you interpret them. @FaeryTaleDolls  Год назад +3

I don't know if I can put words into why, but you noticing the scarf moving is just so human, and so nice. Like a wholesome little moment ♥
Given that I did ask for input to this video, I wonder if no one who answered thought of advertising pressure? Now that you say it, it does seem pretty obvious, but it never crossed my mind. I wonder if the people who did answer expressed that as FOMO, but part of it really is the advertising affecting them without them even knowing?

    • @yulia_plat
      @yulia_plat Год назад +2

@@FaeryTaleDolls I always thought that the words on the packages "collect them all" did not really affect anyone. They did not affect me, so I thought that they did not affect others either. I thought it was a failed advertising strategy, but if we accept the fact that a strategy can work so well that people don't even realize it, then it can be a brilliant strategy. But I think people could write it off as FOMO, whether they were aware of its influence or not.

So I used to be a completist when I collected BeGoths. I started out getting my faves but there'd only be the odd one I didn't like so I got them to complete the set and they'd grow on me more in person. Also I think they released one series a year, so it was easy enough to keep up with. With Monster High, I set out to be a completist (minus exclusives as being in the UK made this difficult/expensive) - This was fine in the beginning but ultimately I couldn't keep up with how fast they started releasing so abandoned that and focused on my faves as there was always one's I didn't particuarly want anyway. With Rainbow High I was late to the party, I don't care enough for the boys or the price of the collector dolls so I'm not a completist. However, MGA have really been knocking out the park lately so I'm finding myself wanting to complete more and more lines though I still wish we had 2 outfits (Example A: Kim is a stunning doll so I can overlook the awful outfit but would have really appreciated a 2nd outfit to change her into over accesories I don't care for. I do like the phones and laptops though.)

Tbh I’m only a complitionist with monster high g1, and it’s purly cause I love that their an altarnative doll line about monsters and their the only few altarnative doll lines I can afford buying all(at least on sites like Vinted)-wish I could complete doll lines like living dead dolls or begoth but both can go up for so high same with novi stars(not alt but still a monster doll line)
Doll lines like OMG, RH and nanana suprise are good but I’m not giving with the overly bright rainbow sparkly aesthetic they have , I’m even debating on dropping some lines that don’t speak to me as much so I could have more room

I can understand all of the POVs mentioned. I used to be a completionist myself back with G1 Monster High but it took the fun out of collecting for me tbh. Some dolls I bought just because I felt like I had to and not cause I truly wanted them. Nowadays I just get the dolls I love the most. I still get hit with FOMO from time to time yes but I try to restrain myself. Cause where I live dolls are really expensive, almost never any sales, and also basically no other options besides ordering online. So it wouldn't be plausible for me to collect that way, I'd ruin myself. I personally redress almost all my dolls to put my own flair to them anyways so don't feel the need to even complete sets either. Only exception is the Royal 3, I wanted all of them cause they combined my 2 worlds (kpop & dolls) so I felt like I just had to have them.
Not judging anyone either (well except those who you mentioned in the video that are basically scalpers). We all collect as fits us best, I mean just as long as you don't loose the fun in collecting and/or putting yourself in huge debts I say go for it :)
We should collect for fun and cause it makes us happy, it really shouldn't feel like a burden.

I don’t consider myself a completionist, but I think the way I display has a lot to do with it. For example, I recently picked up the hat-tastic tea party set from EAH, which is cute on its own, but I think filling up the playset with other dolls from that line would improve the experience greatly. I love having little scenes with my dolls interacting, so having them go together makes the display look better!
So, while I don’t need to complete every line, if I get one doll from a line, I’ll want at least one more.

I collect Living Dead Dolls, owning the majority of the regular run series of dolls that appeared on store shelves during the peak of their popularity. When I first started I collected the individual dolls from each line that were appealing to me aka "cute" and I was limited to space living in a small apartment in NYC. It wasn't until years later that I grew to appreciate the other dolls within the series my initial doll came from and gained more living space. There are dolls I have no interest in owning to complete a series because of personal reasons and one particular series within LDD because the dolls in that particular series were just mediocre. I did discover one doll series that I had to get all of them and that's because it was such a short run and I found them all worth owning.

I am not a completionist. I love and collect too many different types of dolls. It would be impossible.
I totally understand the "I love them all" feeling. I am a bit like this so I have to restrain myself. It does not have to be to complete lines but I love tons! I also can relate to loving a specific character. I tend to be a "duplicationist" sometimes 😶🤭. I thrift a lot and if I see a doll/character I love (especially some MH characters hmm hmm) in boot sales, I just can't leave them there even if they are in bad shape. I fix them and redress them. I have to work on this tendency as I have sometimes 3 of the same doll (I don't mean different version of the character but real duplicates) sigh... It hardly cost me anything but it takes space. Luckily, it does happen only for a few specific dolls.
The clothes and dolls to redress, I can relate. Boot sales and charity shops are good for that. Of course, it requires patience but it is fun to find things you wanted that way. I suppose in the US, there are so many reductions, it is easier to buy a doll new in shop to redress or to use the outfits.
I have seen 3 of the new RH dolls so far. Love the 3 of them (except for their defects). I will have to pick my absolute favourite out of the 3. Hard task... 😉

Second, for some reason over the years, I've become very color sensitive, and only collect a few colors of dolls. Meaning hair/makeup/clothes. So even if I think a doll is pretty, I won't purchase it if I know I don't like the color scheme. For some reason I've been having trouble writing comments on various RUclipsrs pages. I've never been a completionist collector despite having collected everything from transformers to dolls to whatever else. I think with me it comes down to aesthetic. I collect exclusively based on if I like how it looks. Even if its a niche character that I love to death of the only products made of the character arent accurate or aesthetically pleasing I won't buy it. So when I'm into media even if I love the entire cast I will only buy the "best"/ most accurate figures of them. That's why I could never get into Funko pops because they're way more about the experience of collecting them they are about a visually pleasing final product.
