WATCH: Historic West Belleville Storefront Demolished

An historic storefront at 1013 W. Main St. was demolished Wednesday. The storefront, built in the mid-19th century, was the subject of much debate amongst the Belleville Historical Society, the city of Belleville, and St. Clair County. City officials say the building is in disrepair and needs to come down, while opponents say the money used for demolition could be used for retrofitting. Melanie Rhutasel, who lives in the townhouse adjacent to the property, said she has seen multiple squatters coming in-and-out. After photos showing undeniable condemnation within the house were given as proof of the building's dilapidation, the building came down.
