I still remember the day the channel launched, I had one of those Amstrad 16 channel receivers that required the separate Videocrypt decoder, When i heard about UK Gold launch i had to go out looking for a Videocrypt decoder and of course due to the new channel coming up anyone who had a Videocrypt decoder spare wanted silly money for it, I eventually found one in a second hand shop for £8, Plugged it in and sat patiently for the channel to start mesmerized by the backward ticking clock, Even Sky Sports was FTV back then !! I moved onto D2MAC the same year when i moved home to somewhere with a bigger garden for a 2m motorized dish, Then there was a Sky pirate card debacle around 1994 where Sky deliberately released codes and then switched off all the pirate cards, Card still worked on the Adult channel and its harder counterpart on Eutelsat for a number of years, Then moved onto SECA/VIACCESS, Good old days of Satellite TV, What do i have now, Freesat ! Jeez.
Did it become a paid channel September 1993 with Sky multichannels, the gold bar idents introduced slightly later were probably the best to feature on the channel.
UK Gold in its earliest form was the best UK Classic TV channel ever, despite the sparklie pictures due to the use of a slightly weak transponder on Astra 1B satellite channel 23, 11553 GHz / H and slightly horrible Videocrypt distortion that the encryption applied to the picture quality, it was the ONLY place to get your TV heaven fix.
“Programmes drawn from the world’s two biggest companies, the BBC and Thames Television”, it was later programmes from the BBC, Central and ATV for Crossroads, and Thames. They showed Heartbeat and Rising Damp from Yorkshire Television at some point. They also showed Central’s Auf Wiedersehen Pet and Boon.

It was because the BBC shows were 28 minutes long and not designed to contain adverts, so they struggled to work out what to do with them. In the end they decided it was worth paying to edit each show to accommodate breaks, rather than lose out on the ad revenue.
uk gold had far better programmes on back then nowadays all they have to offer is a diet of repeated repeats the channel seems to be only living for the revenue it gets from advertising certainly not for its customers of upc and sky in Ireland rubbish rubbish rubbish time to get rid of it
