I love the idea of taking a black and white photo of the fabric choices. It really shows the contrast from light to dark. Thanks for the tip!

Virginia: I think this topic is not addressed very often. Most people make a video with their choices for pattern/fabric, etc, but not really talk about the importance of scale and value and what looks good together. Especially when making smaller items or quilt blocks, failing to recognize these elements can really make a piece look homemade rather than handmade. Thank you again for addressing this issue and for explaining what factors to look for when choosing fabric for a project. I, too, like the larger-scale prints and buy so many of them that I forget what an asset the smaller-scale and solid(ish) fabrics are for my sewing.

Thank Amy! I think so too. It took me a long time to learn and I had to apply other design experience to figure it out. I still am learning though!

Darn, I was hoping to see sewn examples of the warn and cool and different size prints made up as I am a more visual person and I could not imagine just from the fabric pieces what that would look like.

Me encantó el tip de ver la imagen en blanco y negro. Yo creía que la de diseños naranja era medium y resultó ser la más clara. Gracias por compartir.

    Nice video!
I love with designing to think about the type of print too!
Organic shapes versus geometrical ones! Like a floral or branchy print combined with a stripe or polkadot or checks 😊.
I do this in my house as well, a display with something round, something square and something organicshaped is more interesting and more beautiful than just squares or balls or such.

Thank you. Do you have any tips for the colorblind? I have a problem with darks and shades. I love your videos!

hmm. I wish I did. I would think going with the designers combinations might be best for you. Then after you get used to seeing those combinations together, try to make some on your own again. Would that be helpful?

My young, kindergarten, grandson has just been tested for his color blindness. Very interesting ! He has specific defects, that were tested by using colored filter lenses. My neighbor, of 35 years, is also color blind. He has problem with different shades/tones. Amazingly, he is a historical restoration carpenter, wood stainer & painter. He has color filter glasses and some handheld filter plates that he uses for specialized work. Does amazing work, using the aides ! Perhaps your optometrist could suggest the colored films that would correct your specific defect. Sort of like those red viewer plates that show you color value.

Hi Virginia, thanks for this helpful video. Combining fabrics is something that doesn't come natural to me. I am already signed up for skillshare and would love to see what you offer for classes. I can't find you on skillshare. I've clicked the link, tried to search by your name and also Gingercakes. Can you share a link here. Thank you. I've watched many of your sewing videos and always learn something.

Actually I do not teach on skillshare! They don't have any sewing videos! But I have been thinking about asking them :) . But lots of other creative classes are available that might be of interest to you!

I just found you. I used sew as a teen and I’m relearning after 50 years. It’s more difficult than riding a bike, it easier than starting from scratch. I notice that you occasionally gloss over procedures that I don’t understand. Now that I know you want comments, I’ll say something next time I don’t understand.

Wonderful video! This is a great explanation of the factors that can really make (or break) a project. This will be a helpful tool for many quilters and crafters. Thank you for the Skillshare classes, too. Looking forward to exploring there, as well.
