Absolutely brilliant as always. Your content is the best of its kind on RUclips, and I’m happy to be a Patreon. Your book is fantastic and should be mandatory reading for any beginning smartphone filmmaker. Thanks for the great content and keep it coming!
Excellent video, as always! You're practically the only reviewer here who can give extremely pertinent info / advice on crossovers between proprietary smartphone camera apps and 3rd party apps like FilmicPro. I have a short question: between the Note 20 Ultra and the Xperia 1 ii, whose MAIN sensor is better when used with FilmicPro? I have both phones, by the way. Thank you!
Always great content here, and lots to be learnt. Choosing the 24 frames/second frequency for cinematograph creation, in the late 1920s, was more of a sound-related matter. The former cadence (16 fps) was not fast enough to allow for reproduction of the higher sound frequencies (above 10000 Hz or so), and something had to be done. Then, sound was (for some film-strips) recorded via an optic track on their right-side near the punched holes. And the faster the film is driven the better image and sound are synchronized (16 fps was kind of slow), and you also can record more (sound) informations during a given period. It was also hard for a camera operator to maintain a steady 16 fps pace throughout, and going up to 24 fps gave them some more room to reach a better accuracy as they were rotating the handle manually. Let's always remember the brothers Auguste and Louis Lumière, engineers and co-inventors of the "cinématographe Lumière". As a twist of words, "lumière" [lu-mee-err'] means "light" in French, which couldn't be more appropriate ! And let's not forget the man who seeded the idea : Etienne-Jules Marey, inventor of the "kinétoscope" (litteraly, observer-of-the-movement). He wanted to study the movement of animals, whether birds, horses, dogs, humans, and found a way to record sequences of photographs. He didn't go further, as his machine was sufficient for giving him a precise view of how movement was created by leaving creatures. But it really was the ancestor of the "cinématographe" in all its aspects, machinery, processes. All these genuises must be remembered, even in our digital ages. Without them...
I don't usually comment on videos but it was something that made me not to just pass by your video. Seeing that at that age you still found something that you are passionate about and you putting so much efforts into your videos is more inspiring than any motivational videos. It makes me recall my old dreams and motivates me to actually follow them. I am sorry if the age part was a bit offensive, maybe I didn't phrase it well, but I think you get what I meant. Thank you, sir, I wish you the best
I'm 46. Still collect video games, make short films, play in bands etc. I think there's this nonsensical attitude that to be "grown up" you have to give up the things which brought you joy when you were young. It's probably why so many people are bitter later in life, so go be creative and happy.
Well done! The film grain example you said you downloaded looks like "real" film grain. The problem I've had with just about every digital film grain is that it's only black and white. That's fine for emulating B&W motion picture film, but it doesn't work for emulating color motion picture film. Why? Because the three layers of color film grains contain color, once it has been developed. The same thing happens when the projection print is made. If you stood a few feet from a cinema screen when the film was project onto it, you'd see a jumble of grains, in yellow, cyan, and magenta, not black and white.
Hi Simon, great run through video of the Super 16 app, I thought I'd let you know that with their Kodak emulated film stocks if the numbering begins with 5 then it's a 35mm optimized filter and if the numbering begins with a 7 it'll be a 16mm and Super 8 optimized filter, go for which one you prefer... 🙂

amazing video. cool style and presentation of information. Thanks to you, I discovered a new tool, Super 16. I’ve already tried it and was pleased. you make your videos very cool. continue in the same spirit. The information from this video was very useful for me!

you can love or hate it but heres my opinion i like film look only not hybrid like film/digital no matter what it will look digital with filters its obvious why i tried to make digital look film through lenses apps that record in 24/23 fps etc and still looks digital but i love the experience of portability and friendly budget but its not for me, thanks for the tips and years youve given us your audience, cheers🤙🏽🙏🏼

Many of these "qualities" pertains to the love some have for film photography too. I try to explain to them that some of that doesn't come from just applying a filter. Go out and buy an old film lens and adapter and you'll get some of these qualities right out of the box.
Hi Simon... I've iPhone XR and plan on buying FiLMicC Pro to create cinematic film looking RUclips videos. I've two question please: 1) Do you have FilMiC Pro buy/purchase link? 2) Do you have a similar video providing best possible settings for iPhoneXR + FiLMiC pro? Thank you so much.
hi Shawn. Filmic pro is in the Apple app store. I don't have settings specific for iPhone XR, but nearly all the settings I talk about (except ones specific to Android) should be relevant
Thank you so much for this. I’m an iOS user and will make better use of VideoLUT after your request to add de-sharpening. Might dig out my old Xperia just for processing in Super 16 if it can handle the 4K files from Filmic Pro on iOS. Thanks again!
Simon, would you consider reviewing the upcoming Xperia Pro-I after it comes out? Seeing as how your channel is all about making movies with smartphones I'd be very interesting in seeing what your thoughts are on this new Xperia Pro-I coming out. The Xperia line has been promoted has being made for those serious about videography and photography and this upcoming Pro-I model especially so. I know that you've focused on Samsung and the iPhone but is there any chance of you extending that great analysis and insight over to the new Xperia? Thanks for your videos! 😃
I would love to but if I don't get sent these things for free, it's quite an investment. Unfortunately buying phones to review is difficult unless you are one of the big channels and the Pro-I is one of the most expensive phones out there... chances are I won't be able to, unless this channel takes off haha

Hello, thank you for this channel i have learnt a lot ! I have a question. I'm using Filmic Pro (24fps - 4k) I was doing a close-up with a macro lens, but then when I watch the image in the computer, it looks than every shoot I took (24fps) seems to be quite cut, the movement is not smooth, it looks like it was shots within a lot of shots... it looks like robotic. I don't know if its the lens, if its my movement with the camera, maybe you can help me :) Thank you !!
Hi, friend. I like to record videos with my LG-V30 Smartphone which is fantastic, even if it is from the year 2017, it has a fully manual video recording application out of the box, it even records in LOG mode. However, the LOG mode is only for the main camera, the wide angle does not have a LOG mode. That is why I am interested in recording with Filmic. My problem is that being a Variable FPS recording, the result is bad with Filmic, with a maximum that can be 25 and a minimum of 6, this makes the playback look jerky. This does not happen to me with the native application of my Smartphone. Does this happen to you too? Any suggestions. Thanks.
I've watched a lot of your videos and their great as always but my big question is I'm a Motorola guy and I've always used Motorola but they just don't seem to work with phone holders and lens attachments as well as maybe Samsung is there a perfect phone that is affordable that you would recommend for doing these kinds of work in Android? thanks in advance
I haven’t switch to filmic pro yet. I’m on the laggy version. But I just got an iPad I planned to use filmic remote with. But. I noticed a lot of laggg. Is it bc I’m using filmic legacy? Or is it bc I’m using an iPad Pro 2017? Any advice or tips would be appreciated
So you shoot at 24fps but wouldn't it be better in terms of image quality shooting at 30fps (getting more info) and then just downgrade it to 24fps on the postpro?
You don't get extra information, you just get 6 extra frames (that you don't want). You will cause yourself frame rate issues. Which 6 frames will you remove to go from 30 to 24? You can't do it without causing loss in smoothness.
Not sure why when I want to select 10 bit recording i lose the 1/48 shutter option as well as 1.33 anamorphic in Hardware is greyed out in filmic pro. Is it possible to shot 10bit at 1/48 with anamorphic lens?
Incredible! Better than most film courses I've taken! You're a gifted teacher.

I'm able to on my iPhone 12 Pro Max. If you have android a lot depends on the device
I really wish Filmic Pro would let IOS devices use the sharpness and noise reduction, but I'm sure it is most likely Apple limiting what can be done.
