  • So the Mongoose was stolen... and only the wheels were recovered.
    But I like building.
I thought, perhaps it's time to move away from building up more fixed gear bikes... and this would be symbolic of a potential move away from fixie builds.
    Convince me otherwise.
    Specs:
Elops Urban 500 Speed single-speed frame
Shimano Claris ST-2400 levers, FD and RD
    OEM wheelset
    KMC X8 chain

Thanks! Yeah am still in the process of finding the perpetrator. We kind of have an idea who it is, but we are giving him a chance to step forward and return the bike before pressing criminal charges.

Thanks, sir. I wanted to see if I could turn a SS/ fixie frame into a geared road bike as an experiment, since I had an old Claris groupset lying around. I won't advise doing the same with an aluminium frame due to its lack of relative malleability.

Hahaha it's a nice challenge. It can only be done on steel frames, however.

Personally I would use a Triban RC100 as a better alternative to such build. Yours has a replaceable mech hanger though :D By the way - how are the crank and front derailleur working? I thought they are not compatibile.

Haha yes, this was EXPERIMENTAL. I had an old ST-2400 groupset lying around so I wanted to somehow make use of it. How do the crank and front derailleur work? I did cold set the dropouts first, so the alignment happened to be spot on after I put on the FD and crank.

    Thanks for sharing your process!
Every considered using a internal hub, shimano have one that is 8 speed for a reasonable price?

      Hi!
Going into the build, the intent was to keep the budget as low as possible, and to make use of parts I had laying around.
Alfines at the time cost much more than a claris groupset, so installing one would have defeated the purpose of keeping the budget low.
Plus this was meant to be a bit of a challenge.
