- "The incredible changes that you go through, is life. Life is complex, confusing. The sky is very permanent, not changing." Interview with artist Yoko Ono about how life and art are connected in her work, which she sees as a means for simplifying things.
Yoko Ono talks of her performance Sky Piece to Jesus Christ (1965), her interest in music, her use of her voice, as well as more generally about her ideas and working methods. "I just wanted to clear the air" she says of her screaming. She also talks of the relationship between body and mind, and how the body is a kind of material, you can work with. Her interest is mainly the spirit, or concept of things: "We're all together in a thing called life. It's really great. And it's very interesting, because the wind is blowing, the weather, the temperature, or the light, and I'm suddenly standing in another country. Very real."
Avant-garde artist Yoko Ono was born in Tokyo in 1933, but moved to New York when she was 18, later becoming one of the most important representatives of the fluxus movement. Yoko Ono, who was called "the most famous unknown artist in the world" by John Lennon, was actually a recognized artist when they met in 1966.
Yoko Ono was interviewed by Synne Rifberg at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark.

I will give her this - I have responded where I would normally probably not bother, and that is an integral aspect of art - illiciting any sort of response. Also I have to believe that there is something, anything redeemable about her. I suffer with the thought that John Lennon was influenced by her otherwise. The last minute holds good advice - .

If you think the humour is unintentional, then you really just don't get it. Lightness, playfulness, humour, delight. All of that is at play in Ono's work. other's assume it is all meant to be taken so seriously, because we are used to artists taking themselves to seriously...and, in doing so, they miss the point altogether.

Approximately Infinite Universe is a good album if you are not into the more screamo stuff. I like Fly, Blueprint for a Sunrise, Feeling the Space and some of her more recent albums too.
People may be surprised by how good some of her albums are if they get past the prejudice they have for her.

I love Yoko’s music, writing, performance, primal singing, and art. You’re not going to find a lot of people in the comment section who are knowledgeable about art, history, and avant-garde culture. Every negative comment is basically somebody who doesn’t read a lot about art, isn’t very evolved, and probably suffers from a bit of unconscious racism and misogyny.

***** From what she said previous to that I think it's simplicity vs complexity, or constant vs change; but, she said that those words don't really describe it so she uses epic images 'life' (complex, ever changing) with 'sky' (constant, the same - in her opinion).
That's her take on it. I think her art is meant to be taken a bit more simply than it comes across. It's hammering home simple messages (conventional noise, slowing down in life etc, etc). Whether you find it to resonate or not.. well.
I'm surprised to say that her stuff does resonate with me. I don't know if I would call it superb or technically revolutionary, but I think that's the point. It's very simple and humble.

Well from what I know these modern art wannabes have a lot of control over the art industry, so they do take a lot of room and spotlight away from the right artists. It is pretentious so I use the word, why do you have a problem with that? It is not artistic, anyone can come up with that from the top of their head in a moment and "perform" like that. I'm not arguing this just because I don't like it, it's completely not crafty and it is only silly. So therefor I call it pretentious, as modern art is.

Yeah don't take issues on a subject you know clearly nothing about - opinions are opinions but this simply isn't art, it's complete bullshit (and that's a fact, not an opinion). Everyone pretends they see something deep in this, when they're just too stupid or arrogant to accept that they aren't deep and artistic and don't actually see anything. This isn't art, this is complete pretending on every part. Now before you open your mouth about modern art and say that it doesn't damage the industry, go read a few proper articles on it. If it didn't harm anyone I wouldn't care - I would still think it's fucking ridiculous but then it wouldn't matter. But when it in fact does hurt the industry people need to stand against it. Another tip is to go read the childhood story Emperor's New Clothes and it'll give you some insight on what I mean.
