Just some advice I wish I had when I started off.
I apologise if it seems rough but it’s something never taught.
    1. Perception is reality
    - how you dress (I.e. you dress like a bum they think you’re a bum)
    - how you communicate (I.e. you talk like an idiot they think you’re an idiot)
    - how you carry yourself (I.e. unconfident, saggy shoulders. They unlikely to take your advice seriously)
    2. You will never be the best working 9 to 5.
    - you need to do untold hours in your own time improving (it helps to love what you doing and mastery leads to job satisfaction)
    - you will never stop learning (I thought this was a lie, I am almost 50 and still learning)
    3. Be involved in any company social events
    - this is critical in getting management to know you on a personal basis (I.e. better personal communication with management on any future jobs. You come to mind for potential jobs, you climb the ladder quicker etc)
    4. You need to do your time
    - 10+ years, this game is based off a lot of experience (if you under 30 no matter how talented don’t despair if you feel under appreciated)

Your video series is a true escalation and inspiration of my engineering career. Random vibration from any type of load effect is a key to successfully design a structure. The design Euro Codes I am familiar with are always recommend that the first 3 modal shapes are supposed to examine or overlook. The frequency governs structures. It is like you try to analyze it using all mathematic you’ve learnt from calculus to statistics. Surely it is a lot of fun. The renewable energy sector is also a pathway that a structural engineer can develop. Just keep going! Thank you for your video.

Great video Brendan. These Q&A sessions are gold! I've got some burning questions (might be for the following Q&A)... I'm always curious as to what habits successful engineers have. I'm a big proponent of continuous development. What habits do you (or any successful engineers you know of) have? Things that come to mind are daily learning, reading, looking after your health, etc. Any practical tips and advice you have?
Also, as a passionate engineer, your career can easily dominate your life. How do you balance a busy career with family and personal goals?
    Keep up the excellent work!

I want to add a deck extension to my back porch with a free standing cantilever awning starting on the farthest end away from the porch and extending to within 12" to 16" of my existing hip roof porch overhang. I would like the deck to be 22' long by 20' wide and use cedar frame materials for the cantilever awning with opaque polycarbonate corrugated panels for the roof. My ideal roof (pitch) slope will be 18.5 or 26.7 degrees. I anticipate 16" on center ceiling joist spacing with a 15" side and end roof overhang. If this can be done, what size will the vertical corner support posts need to be, what size boards do I need to use for ceiling joists and cross braces and how long do the upper corner post braces need to be to support the weight of the awning roof? Thank you for any input.

Hello Brendan, I am working towards my Bachelorette degree in civil engineering because I love the idea of problem solving. I am 40 years old and have another 2 years to go in school. I also work full time. I am curious about your opinion on new engineers that work for you that might not have a full grasp on concepts that were taught in college. The reason I ask is because I feel like in school, there is a rush to get through material and that I do not have sufficient time to fully commit to everything being taught. To believe there is some leeway for things to be learned during internships, or should I eat, sleep, and live engineering?
Thank you in advance, love all the content ❤

Hey Brendon, costs of timber and steel have gone up a fair bit due to pent up demand and supply chain disruptions. It is critical for any new build to employ a more reliable and cost effective system in a new build moving forward. Do you think the premium for precast concrete systems for foundations, slabs and walls are beginning to make more sense for new build with BIM, productivity and efficiency from upscaling in factories located in Australia?

    • @BrendanHasty
      @BrendanHasty 2 года назад

Hi Dan, there is already alot of Precast in Australia, and it isnt immune to the cost increases. moving forward, fabrication offsight to minimise material is the parth forward. this would also help with the push to net zero. but with the cost increase it will likely shift how building are built, not sure if precast is the correct parth.

Referring to the ‘maximum movement’ of the ‘highest most accessible point’ of a tower as _peak sway....._
    1) How can the peak sway of a tower be accurately measured?
    2) Is there any formula in which the available specs of a structure such as the ‘Eureka Tower’ could be used to calculate an estimate of its ‘peak sway’?
    3) Is the peak sway even a point of discussion in design phase or is it impossible to predict?
    4) What term would you use to describe peak sway?
Thanks in Advance. I’m not sure if you’re across any of the low cost, commercial space travel options in construction phase but the launch/landing site safety & compatibility requirements for these, are the reason I’m asking.

Hi Rabbit when you first start out your still have alot to learn so it is normal. it is good to know that you need to keep learning. it just takes time. just keep studying, ask questions and get experance in engineering you will come over this lack of knowledge and likely oyu know more then your do.
