Vanagon fender crease reduces when jacking up the rear of the van (540p)

  • The VW Vanagon has a strange problem where the rear body develops a 'crease' a little forward of the rear fender well.
    In this video I show the crease on a van, and observe its behavior when jacking the rear of the van up by the rear engine mount.
    One of the theories has been that 'twisting the van' causes the crease but in this video it is shown that jacking the van off-center in the rear, from either side reduces the height of the crease.

    Not sure why you would want to jack on the engine mount--bad idea to start with. As a 30 year Vanagon owner, and retired master mechanic, you should only jack on the jacking points or the cross member in the back. Or you may get bending or flexing of the frame and body. Van was not designed for that. Just saying.

      I don’t think you get the point of the vid. Tom is showing the deflexion of the body panel when jacking under the engine mount. The direction of deflection is the point of interest .
