There is a great documentary about their efforts that you can likely find here on YT. The only way to evacuate was one road to Fort Myers. And they didn’t leave. I have vacationed on Sanibel many times. I would have packed up and left the entire area. People don’t respect Mother Nature and the havoc she can cause.

The Coast Guard is incredible in this situation and in many other situations. My only question is, "why didn't the people who live here leave and go inland"? I'm glad everyone was safe but at the same time I'm thinking, "for Pete Sake's, when a hurricane is coming, leave! I'm from the midwest and when tornado sirens go off I head for the basement. I don't sit to see if I can, "wait out," the tornado, because with common sense I know that I can't and don't want to take chances. The Coast Guard is amazing. They do so much and deserve more recognition. This is one situation in which they calmly went above and beyond.

When they could be spending their time on those whom would need it more. Selfish, selfish. They should be made to pay for their rescues. Absolutely amazing. I am impressed that the woman held it together. I can definitely say I would have been freaking out if I had to get in a basket all alone to be lifted into the air to that height. I was so worried the pup would try to wriggle away the moment the basket started lifting off the ground. The Coast Guard are true heroes for victims of hurricanes and other natural disasters.

An amazing crew of men in women who selflessly serve in times of tragedy. How professional and caring they are. While the sadness of the hurricane will be felt for a long time what gives me hope is there are people like the Grandson and the guardsmen who exist in this world to help others.

They did not need to be rescued. They were stubborn and defied the evacuation orders and deserve no help. Even the emergency services and fire fighters left the island. They can butcher and cook their dog for food if they get hungry. But their maid service was probably smart enough to evacuate, so they don't know how to cook.
