******** The ads shown on this video are not my doing, a record label falsely claimed the Nokia ringtone as copyright. I have contacted Nokia regarding the issue as RUclips's fight claim system is of no help. Sorry for the inconvenience. What do you guys think of the N97? Do you own one? Do you think it really contributed to Nokia's downfall? Let me know down below!
I don’t think this device alone is the reason. We have so many factors to consider. During this time, people are looking for alternatives and new experiences. They found that in Android and iPhone OS. Sure, this phone failed to achieve the same level of achievement the first or second iPhone had. However, it was Nokia’s backward thinking management at the time that contributed most to its demise. Google approached them to join Android. They refused and made Symbian an open-source OS. When that failed, they moved to partner with Intel to create MeeGo. It could’ve saved the company because MeeGo is unique, and the experience is so ahead of its time that same gesture experience was only realized on iOS during its iPhone X era. But then, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop decided to abandon the OS and went for Windows Phone. An OS which right from the get go, doesn’t stand a chance with more established platforms such as Android and iOS.
Indeed and another reason MeeGo didn't take off was apps. Developers were already juggling between IOS, Android and Windows phone and Symbian so a whole new OS was another headache. And yeah one of Nokia's biggest mistakes was dropping the Ion and Ion mini Android prototypes in favor of Windows phone. Windows phone's own flaws then dragged Nokia down with it. Nokia also didn't adapt fast enough, they thought their reputation alone could carry them forever and did not innovate, hence them falling out.
Worst yet, they are doing it again. Sitting on their name brand and releasing mediocre Walmart phones. The 5710 XpressAudio and new 8210 were good refreshers indeed but they need to do more.
I really like the design of this phone, a physical QWERTY keypad is a great feature to have. This phone may have led to the downfall of Nokia (I personally don't think so) but it was one of Nokia's last great flagship phones.
36:24 Woah!!! I was caught off guard. I didn't expect to hear this nostalgic tune in this video. I repeatedly played it for several times before moving on. Thank you for playing it here in this video. While listening to it, it feels like I'm in my childhood era once again.
Thanks for the retrospective. It amazes me to this day that Nokia managed to get 32GB of internal storage into this thing. Might be where the biggest part of the devices cost layed. I used a C6-00 for many years. It is kind of similar hardwarewise to the N97 but lacked the internal storage and Carl Zeiss optics. I used a microSD for media and games but the 250MB of storage were more than enough for the system, apps like WhatsApp, RUclips, simple Games etc. I loved playing Megadrive games with Picodrive on the C6's keyboard.
Nokia shot themselves in the foot by switching to Windows Phone OS. If they continued to develop Meego (which is still the best take on mobile UI, UX and multitasking to date) and released a few Android devices I think they would be on top today!
I used to have Nokia N97 when I was aged 17 - 18. Had great memories with it, played a lot of Gameboy and N-Gage Games on it, installed some Cooked Firmware (CFW) on it. Superb camera and its stereo speaker were awesome. Too bad the flex connecting it's LCD was broken after using it for almost 2 years. What an awesome phone.
Mine is still going strong! The only thing broken is the keyboard slider key. I have a CFW installed and tons of apps+games. Nokia is still king in terms of hardware design!
I had one until around 2011 when it finally give up the ghost and the digitiser died. Hardware wise this phone was on another level, the only thing that let it down was the lack of app support and the resistive screen. If it had run on an old version of android I think this phone would have been far more successful than it was. The camera was truly way before it's time.
No. Its not possible. 4 last Nokia phones on world with OS Symbian (N8, E7,X7 and N808) has much better system (Symbian Belle) then N97 (Symbian^3) and doesnt support WhatsApp, FB or INSTG,too
I'm in a predicament, I've recently took out the old phones that me ans my familt have used so they i can see what they can be used for. N97 being one of them. I've tried the D/S/S/P button combo to get the phone working. There is no sign of life, absolutely nothing. I have no clue weather is down to the battery or the problems it has (only now finding out about the problems) It's frustrating due to the fact that the last time it was used it was in absolute working condition and been simply powered of. Does anyone know anything for the issue?
My father had this phone when I was a kid and it was the cooles phone I have ever seen. I swore that I wanted to own a phone like that when I am grown. Well now 3G towers are down and I will never be able to use this properly :(
Had one of these in 2009, camera was superb, if it had ran on android OS it might have had a chance against the Iphone, thats where they fcuked up mostly running that trash symbian software
Oh cool..that is not available in America so I have to import..shipping is very expensive. But I will definitely do a video when I get one. I bought a Lumia 2520 today

agreed. everything iOS and android capitalize today was done by meego a decade ago. truly the definition of ahead of its time.

Camera samples look like from some new phones of 2022 !! awsome quality that too in 2009
Indeed..most budget phones today wont be able to keep up with this
It had a camera built by a professional brand. I bet only a Huawei flagship could compete with this.

I had use this phone before i bought me my N900. The N97 was an excellent phone and looks stilltoday very stylish. 🤩
I never owned one of these back in the day. I always read that it took good photos but damn, those are mind blowing for 2009.
